Dare question – Vegemite is a favorite Australian spread, but most americans hate it. ?

I know it looks like tar and some say it smells funny, but have you actually tried it? I love it lightly spread on toast, with avocado, lettuce on bread, in scrambled eggs and is great with cheese and alfalfa.
If you haven’t and just follow the herd, why don’t you try it.

It is better than Marmite (Ido not like this one) but prefer Promite. Just try it, a little spread on a peice of bread with butter or savoury cracker. Full of Vitamin B

Herbs are fun to grow and easy to use. Herbs can be a frugal cook’s best friend because they can enhance even the simplest fare making it seem grand! Herbs are easy to grow–you can even grow them on your kitchen windowsill.

The addition of herbs can change completely the flavor of foods-from homemade breads to soups, stews and vegetables. And they can add variety and excitement to your diet.

A beginner should use herbs with care, adding a little at a time and adjusting to your own taste. Each herb has its own individual flavor and certain herbs also have well-known associations with particular foods. Basil is often paired with tomatoes, rosemary with
lamb, chives with cream cheese and cottage cheese.

Fresh herbs are wonderful as garnishes. Herb vinegars can be used in salad dressings, soups and marinades. You can also add fresh herbs to mayonnaise or butter for a different flavor.

Fresh herbs will keep in the refrigerator for several days. A good way to freeze herbs such as basil, oregano, and dill is to chop, place in ice cube trays, cover with water and freeze. Then just add to stews and sauces when needed.

Some easy herbs to grow are lemon balm, rosemary, oregano, dill, basil, parsley, peppermint, lavendar, sage. Of course, you can buy herbs to cook with at the supermarket, also.

Here are some simple recipes to get you started using herbs in your cooking.

Lemon Chive Dressing

1 clove garlic
dash of salt
Rind of 1 lemon, finely grated
and the juice
1 1/2 teaspoons mustard
4 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons chopped chives

Put the garlic and salt in a bowl and crush together. Add lemon rind, juice and mustard, stirring until smooth. Slowly whisk in the oil. Fold in chives and season with black pepper, if desired.

This is a good dressing to pour over warm, cooked new potatoes. Add finely chopped green onions.

Mint Iced Tea

Wash 8 sprigs of fresh mint, 12 inches long (any mint, spearmint, peppermint, applemint will do). Place in blender with 4 cups water and liquefy. Let it set for about 1/2 hour and strain.

Herb Butter

1/2 cup butter
4 tablespoons fresh herbs or 2 teaspoons of dried herbs

Soften the butter to room temperature. Finely chop the fresh herbs. Blend herbs and butter well. Store in fridge.

Use to season vegetables, as a spread on bread, biscuits or baked potatoes. Anywhere you normally use butter.

Here’s something different: not really cooking, but a recipe that you might find fun!

Basil-Lemon Facial Mask

Pulverize a handful of fresh basil leaves. Peel 1/2 of an avocado and mash. Add avocado to basil in blender, along with 1 teaspoon lemon juice and 1 teaspoon honey,Mix until smooth.

Apply to clean face and leave as long as desired. Rinse off with lukewarm water.

In short, you don’t have to be an herb specialist to learn to enjoy using herbs.

Have i eaten well so far today?

I am trying to lose 5-10 pounds. i am 5′9, 135 pounds 19 years old female. today i have eaten:

breakfast…fresh fruit and veg smoothie made myself with a juicer and blender, consisting of pineapple, spinach, avocado, cucumber, celery, lime, apples

snack…Apple

lunch…slice of whole grain bread, handful of raspberries and blackberries, danone light yogurt

snack…part skim mozzarella cheese stick

for dinner i am planning on a slice of whole grain toast with scrambled eggs and smoked salmon.

what do you think…too much? too little? any tips would be great. i drink only water and tea (not the bottled kind, just home made with tea bags) throughout the day.

seems like a good diet to me… add some veggies to your dinner instead of just a slice of toast or try putting organic peanut butter on your toast this way you get protein and a good taste!!! good luck

I have to be honest.  This is one question that REALLY gets my goat.  Whenever I hear someone attacking the raw diet because it’s too “boring,” I go crazy!

Really, I hulk out!

I’ve been following a low-fat raw vegan diet for almost 2 years now.  I can honestly say, without any reservations, that there is absolutely NOTHING boring about a raw food diet!

*Deep Breath*  Okay, I’m calm now.

Let me explain why a raw food diet is totally NOT boring.

Variety

The variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds that exist is astounding.  You have apples, grapes, oranges, bananas, peaches, pears, cantaloupe, romaine, celery, cucumber, avocado…and I’m just alluding to what is available in your local grocery store!

In fact, I can almost guarantee you that raw foodists eat *more* variety than ANYONE on a standard American diet…or any other diet for that matter.

This is because most people tend to eat just a handful of dishes that become their staples.  And these dishes are usually very similar.

If you eat meat, your meals will generally center around a protein, with some starchy vegetable and maybe greens along side.  If you’re from the Southern States, your greens are cooked to death in butter and everything gets a nice heapin’ helping of beef gravy smothered on top. ;)

If you are vegetarian or vegan, the focus is usually on whole grains or legumes with vegetables.  And of course, everyone has his or her favorite dessert.

But when you live on a fruit-based diet, you have to adapt what you are eating to what you can find in your area.  Just because you have a few favorite fruits does not mean that they will always be available.

I would gladly eat nothing but mangoes for the rest of my life, but I can’t because they are not always in season!

Where’s the Proof?

Still skeptical that a raw diet is really that varied?  Here’s a list of several of the different varieties of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds that I eat in a given year:

AND I didn’t even include the different varieties of fruit within each species.  For instance, there are Navel and Valencia oranges, red and green grapes, the Fuji apples and the Gala apples, Red Haven and White Nectar peaches, etc.

All of this is found conventionally at my local supermarkets in Tennessee.  Of course, if you live somewhere tropical or have access to exotic markets, you have a whole different spectrum of fruits to choose from:

o    Chocolate Sapote
o    Custard Apple
o    Durian
o    Jackfruit
o    Litchi
o    Longan
o    Mamey Sapote
o    Mangosteen
o    Rambutan
o    Sapodilla
o    Soursop

There’s even a peanut butter fruit that has the taste AND texture of peanut butter!

How can a diet that’s full of so many different smells, tastes, and textures be boring?

Quite simply, it cannot.

Raw Recipes

If you *still* aren’t convinced that a raw diet isn’t boring, you probably haven’t considered all the different raw vegan recipes that you can make.

And I’m not talking about fatty dehydrated conglomerations that are made to mimic the flavor and textures of cooked dishes.  I’m referring to simple, delicious, healthy meals that contain few ingredients and take literally minutes to put together.

There are fruit smoothies, green smoothies, fruit soups, vegetable soups, fruit salads, savory salads, fruit puddings, dips, salsas, and even fruit ice creams!

You could literally take just a few different healthy raw ingredients and have a completely different dish for every meal for a whole week!

Now how in the world can a diet like *this* be boring?

Quite simply, it cannot.

Don’t Take My Word For It!

If you are still debating going raw, there is no better time than now to get out there and go for it.  See for yourself just how varied this diet can be.  Buy all the fruits you can and go crazy in the kitchen!

Baby food ideas .. 6 month old?

So my son is 6 months old and has been on solids since he was 4 months . I make all his baby food . .. i don’t like the idea of all the additives in the store brought food.
And im stuck as to what else i can introduce to him
Hes already had –
-rice cereal
Carrot
- pumpkin
-swede
– beans
– bananas
-pears
-apples
-avocado
-sweet potato

So what else is approiate to introduce at his age ??
we dont have any food allergies in the family
Also at what age should i stop pureeing his food ??

He should be able to eat chunky food, you shouldn’t need to puree it anymore. My daughter loved frozen peas, hot or cold. No need to put anything on them, she just picked them up and ate them with her hands. You shouldn’t have to buy the expensive baby cereal anymore, just make him regular oatmeal, cream of wheat, or malt o meal. Don’t add sugar to it, and he will learn to like it without sugar. Cheerios are always good for a snack. My daughter loved yogurt and scrambled eggs.

Mexico offers a unique cuisine that is delicious and healthy. Ancestral home to the Mayan, Aztec and Zapotec civilizations, Mexico has a long history in cultivating food. Native staples included avocados, sweet potatoes, corn, beans, tomatoes, peppers, and a variety of squash. For meat, they hunted deer, turkey, quail, and rabbit. Chocolate is a native plant in this area, and was prepared as a beverage for the Aztec royalty.

When the Spanish arrived in Mexico, they brought their favorite foods with them. Pork, beef, cheese, and cream were added and combined with the native foods. The Spanish brought sheep, chickens, wheat, and sugar. Three hundred years later when Spain finally gave up control of Mexico, their influence on Mexican food was well established.

Corn is a major part of Mexican meals. Cornmeal, known as masa, is made into a dough that can be formed into tortillas, empanadas, or tamales. Corn is also added to soups, stews, and other dishes. Tortillas made of flour are more common in northern Mexico. Chili peppers are also a main part of the Mexican diet. Beans are an important part of Mexican cuisine and it provides a lot of protein. Each region has their own favorite bean. For instance, pinto beans are favored in the north, while black beans are the bean of choice on the Yucatan. Beans are used in soups, as side dishes like frijoles, and as filling.

Beans are not the only food that is regional. In the hot, dry north, beef is eaten a lot because there is plenty of room for grazing. The Pacific coast offers excellent coffee and corn stew. On the Gulf coast, tropical fruits and vegetables are served with fish and seafood. The Spanish influence is very strong in Central Mexico, as this is where they settled. On the Yucatan Peninsula, seafood, eggs, black beans and corn are common food items.

If you want to try making a typical Mexican meal at home, there are many easy recipes to try out. Authentic Mexican rice recipes can set the tone for your entire meal. Rice is frequently used in Mexico as a side dish or as filling. Once you have tried a recipe or two at home, you will see how delicious authentic Mexican food can be.

Try something new and experiment. Adding a different bean can change the texture or flavor to a dish. Add tortillas or refried beans as a side dish, or throw together some fresh seafood and citrus juice to make a cooling ceviche on a hot day. Mexican food is great for kids to make, too. Let them make their own quesadillas or tacos.

You can also add Mexican cuisine to any meal. For breakfast, try mixed tropical fruit or scrambled eggs mixed with salsa. Top a tortilla with a fried egg and add some ham, tomatoes, chilies, and cheese. Add a side of refried beans and you will have a breakfast that will break up the normal routine.

Introducing your baby to solid foods is exciting and rewarding – but it can be difficult to know exactly how and when to get started.  

Your baby should be four months of age at the very least – before this, his immature digestive system will find it difficult to cope with solid food. Most medical professionals, however, will advise waiting until your baby is at least six months of age, to reduce the risk of food allergies.

Your baby’s age is not the only consideration and there are other factors to take into account when determining whether or not the time is right for baby’s first foods.

Look for signs of readiness in your baby – does he watch you with interest when you eat, following the progress of your food from plate to mouth? This increased interest in solid food can indicate that he’s ready to try it for himself.

Does your baby seem dissatisfied after his usual milk feeds, or is he waking at night after previously sleeping through? Although these may be signs of an increase in his appetite, they can also be triggered by discomfort from teething. It is important to try to establish whether or not teething is the cause, to avoid introducing solid foods before your baby really needs them.

Your baby should have good head control and be able to sit well, as this makes swallowing easier. Younger babies may not be able to sit unsupported, however, so it is very important to provide the appropriate support if this is the case.

The decision to introduce solid foods to your baby must ultimately be made by you and your child’s doctor. You may feel pressured by other people – particularly the older generation – to give solid foods to your baby earlier than medical advice recommends. It is important to remember that a great deal of research has been carried out in order to provide this advice and such information simply wasn’t available in the past.

So what is the best first food for baby?

Baby rice, an easily digestible, single grain cereal, is the ideal food to start with. It can be mixed with warmed breastmilk or formula, so its taste will be familiar to your baby. Initially, you can mix it to a fairly runny consistency that your baby will find easy to cope with, thickening the texture slightly with each subsequent feed.

About a tablespoon of baby rice is the perfect amount to start with. Try giving this first solid feed around lunch time, but take the edge off your baby’s appetite by giving him some of his usual milk feed before the baby rice. If he is too hungry, he will be frustrated and distressed.

He will respond well to supportive gestures and smiles, so stay relaxed and don’t worry if he pushes the food back out of his mouth! Most babies do this instinctively at first and this “tongue-thrust” reflex will subside as he becomes accustomed to the new and unusual textures he is experiencing.

If he does not seem interested, simply take the food away and try again the next day, or a few days later. You should not try to force him to eat, as this is traumatic for him and will only make things more difficult. After all, there is no rush – at this stage, breastmilk or formula is meeting all of his nutritional needs.

Once your baby is comfortably enjoying baby rice, then try introducing pureed, fresh vegetables. It is worth noting that some babies do not like baby rice at all and begin by eating vegetables straight away.

Introduce only one new vegetable at a time, leaving four days between each new food. This will help you identify any foods that cause an allergic reaction or trigger digestive problems in your baby.

Some good vegetables to introduce as baby’s first foods are butternut squash, sweet potato, carrots, swede (or rutabaga) and white potatoes. These can be boiled or steamed, then pureed. Alternatively, sweet potatoes can be baked in their skins, then the soft flesh scooped out, ready to serve – instant, healthy baby food!

You can try combining different vegetables for some delicious new flavours – examples include parsnips with green beans, sweet potato and squash and swede (or rutabaga) and carrots. The possibilities are endless!

Once your baby is enjoying vegetables, you can add fruits to the menu. Good choices include pureed banana, avocado and cooked, pureed apples and pears. Citrus fruits should be avoided for the first year, as they can trigger allergic reactions.

For something really different, try combining fruits and vegetables, such as apples with carrots, or bananas with sweet potato, for some unusual but tempting new flavours.

Follow your baby’s lead and increase the amount and frequency of his meals as his appetite dictates. Always watch carefully for any signs of allergic reactions and discuss any concerns with a medical professional.

Above all, have fun introducing baby’s first foods – by selecting and preparing these fresh and wholesome ingredients, you are getting him off to a wonderfully healthy start.

Nope. But the mind is a powerful thing and if you believe it, it could happen.

If you are traveling to Honduras for the first time you are probably interested in knowing what type of food that you will be exposed to. Is it good food? Is it too exotic? Is it something ill like? Well we will take a few moments to explore some of the delicious and wonderful food and drink you will experience in Honduras.

With a few notable exceptions there really is not that much of a difference in with the food in Honduras as here in the United States.

Breakfast in Honduras:

A typical breakfast in Honduras will usually consist of scrambled eggs, beans, and tortillas. In the bigger hotels and resorts of the area typical American breakfast are also available which often include orange juice, toast, eggs, bacon, and coffee.

Honduras Meals:

A normal meal in Honduras is usually consistent of a variety of things. These things would include beans, rice, tortillas and a grilled meat usually chicken but you will find that they use beef and fish more in certain parts of the country.  On the west coast of Honduras or in the bay inlands, seafood is the most widely used cuisine. But traveling there a trip would not be complete without tasting a fresh catch of shrimp, lobster, or the common favorite among natives the conch which is pronounced caracol in Spanish.

In the larger cities of the country like Tegucigalpa, and San Pedro you would be hard pressed to find a variety of American restaurants sine they keep popping up.  You will be able to eat at some of your favorite us restaurants like T.G.I. Friday’s pizza hut, KFC and even cinnabon.

Other Honduras meals:

Some other popular meals that are in Honduras that are must tries are

Burritas: they consist of a chopped meat, refried beans, homemade cheese and avocados, all rolled up into a crispy tortillas. These are not to be mistaken for burritos they are quite different.

Tamales: A major addition to the cuisine in Honduras is Tamales. They include vegetables or potatoes as well as chicken or pork. But beware if you by them off the corner street sometimes the chicken bones are left in there and can easily make you choke. But, major restaurants are going to be safer from visiting gringos to eat at anyway.

Pastelitos de Carne: This includes deep-fried flour pastries filled with meat, rice and/or potatoes. But, any combination of meats, chicken, and pork. Along with a variety of different vegetables so be daring and try a variety.

Snacks & Sides in Honduras:

Anafres: This a  traditional Honduran snack usually served before the main course. It contains hot black beans and cheese dip served with corn chips.

Tostones: This is a deep crunchy plantain this is the staple of traditional Honduran cuisine. It is also known to natives as Platanos fritos.

Ceviche: This is another traditional snack that is truly Honduran. It is made up of raw fish, shrimp or conch and is mixed with tomatoes, onions, barley or cilantro, and is marinated in juice. It is then served with hot tortillas and chips and is something to try if your near the coastal regions.

Honduran Desserts:

Of course now we get to the good stuff traditional Honduran desserts..

The first one is my personal favorite

Tres Leches Cake: It is just as it is named it is a cake that is made with three different types of mike. Each one that provides for a eventful flavor it includes evaporated milk, sweetened milk, and milk cream.

Arroz con Leche: This particular cake is soaked in sugar and hot milk, cinnamon and some homegrown traditional spices. It is also referred to the Honduran rice pudding.. a must try for any dessert lover.

Beverages in Honduras:

Of course what is a vacation without trying some of the local beers or liquors you might come across. Some of the more popular brands of beer in Honduras are Salva Vida, Barenea, and Port Royal. But if your really in the mood or daring you may want to seek out Giffity and Fiery Garifuna liquor.

Of course with any visit to a foreign land always make sure you are aware of what you are eating and that no allergies are present that may make you sick. They cook there food differently so even in “American” restaurants the food will taste different. So be prepared and most of all enjoy yourself and indulge in this wonderful Cuisine.

Lunch-
Small salad with cos lettuce, tomato and avocado no dressing exept for balsamic vinegar.

A salad sandwich

Dinner-
Half a serving of whatever my family makes
or…
A salad the same as lunch but with low fat feta cheese.

Drinks-
One small Glass of fresh juice (not every day but)
Lots of water

Snacks-
Nothing unless im toooo hungry haha
Fruit or celery :)

Im taking diet pills and doing 1 and 1/2 hours – 3 hours of exerzise a day. Im 14 female and my bmi is 19. x

First of all you’re BMI is 19 meaning you’re in the healthy range and far from being off of it, so theres not possible need for a growing 14 year old girl to be going through a diet.. this is going to affect you’re growth- height, hormones, menstral cycle, and more..

Second, you’re not eatting no where near enough calories and fat even for weightloss! This is an anorexic food diary to the birds- eye. Only 1/2 a mini yoghurt.. celery only as a snack..

You’ve got to seek help, or many health issues will soon turn into play, you’re going to go into starvation mode.

Top with poached, fried or scrambled eggs and let everyone add their own choice of lettuce, tomato, avocado, shredded cheese or salsa. Dijon Rice & Egg Skillet Supper

2 to 4 servings

2 cups water

1 cup uncooked rice

1/2 cup bottled non-fat Italian

salad dressing

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

2 cups frozen vegetable

blend, thawed

4 eggs

Parsley sprigs, optional

In 10-inch skillet with lid, cook rice in water according to package directions. Meanwhile, in small bowl, stir together dressing and mustard until well blended. Stir dressing mixture and vegetables into cooked rice. With back of spoon, make 4 indentations in rice mixture. Break and slip an egg into each indentation. Cover. Cook over medium heat until whites are completely set and yolks begin to thicken but are not hard, about 3 to 4 minutes. Garnish with parsley, if desired.

Microwave: Cook rice in water as above. Meanwhile, in small bowl, stir together dressing and mustard until well blended. Stir dressing mixture and vegetables into cooked rice. Transfer to 9-inch pie plate. With back of spoon, make 4 indentations in rice mixture. Break and slip an egg into each indentation. Gently prick yolks with tip of knife or wooden pick. Cover with lid or plastic wrap. Cook on full power, rotating 1/4 turn every 2 minutes, until eggs are almost done, about 6 to 8 minutes. Let stand, covered, until whites are completely set and yolks begin to thicken but are not hard, about 2 to 3 minutes. Garnish as above. Note: Microwave cooking times are based on a full power output of 600 to 700 watts. For a lower wattage oven, allow more time.

Have i eaten well so far today?

I am trying to lose 5-10 pounds. i am 5′9, 135 pounds 19 years old female. today i have eaten:

breakfast…fresh fruit and veg smoothie made myself with a juicer and blender, consisting of pineapple, spinach, avocado, cucumber, celery, lime, apples

snack…Apple

lunch…slice of whole grain bread, handful of raspberries and blackberries, danone light yogurt

snack…part skim mozzarella cheese stick

for dinner i am planning on a slice of whole grain toast with scrambled eggs and smoked salmon.

what do you think…too much? too little? any tips would be great. i drink only water and tea (not the bottled kind, just home made with tea bags) throughout the day.

seems like a good diet to me… add some veggies to your dinner instead of just a slice of toast or try putting organic peanut butter on your toast this way you get protein and a good taste!!! good luck

Does a diet that includes avocado help vaginal yeast infection patients to improve their medical status and get alleviation? The answer to this question is not so simple. Although no food in itself is considered to be a treatment against yeast infection, some vegetables including avocado are seen to be highly effective in securing the right environment in the intestines to help stop the aggravation of yeast infection of vagina.

The yeast infection of the vagina, which is also known as vaginal candidiasis, is a scourge for millions of women in the world. In the western hemisphere, three out of four of all women will experience infection of the vagina at least once in their life, and up to one in twelve will suffer from chronic infections. Human blood can range from 7.35 to 7.45 and in fact 7.4 is considered the best. Nonetheless, deviations from this normal range can cause severe impact on your health. In this way when the blood has too much acid, the body is more at risk to disease and the ideal context for candida over-multiplication comes about (candida multiplies much quicker in an environment that is acid).

Stress and lack of sleep amongst other things in the western lifestyle, in combination with poor diet plans, increase the acidity of your internal environment. But by switching to a diet that is balanced with alkali, the proper acid and alkaline equilibrium can be recovered. This diet needs to observe two main principles: increased consumption of foods that form alkalis and moderate consumption of foods that form acids.

Examples of foods that form alkalis include avocado, with apricots, almonds, asparagus, lettuce, figs, cabbage, cucumber, carrots, lemon, spinach, soybeans, potatoes, grapefruit, tomatoes, etc. A list of acid forming foods includes cheese, bread, meat, fish, eggs, olives and rice. Note that the foods belonging to the second category should not be eliminated completely but simply combined in the right proportion with the foods that form alkalis.

Bear in mind that as the yeast infection of the vagina is a complex phenomenon, brought on by numerous internal and external aspects, neither avocado nor any other nutrients can replace the treatment of candidiasis. What are some wierd but yummy ways to eat Vegemite?

I like it on toasted Turkish bread with avocado. My grandfather drinks it in hot water like Bovril and his mother used to put it in scrambled eggs. I think my way of eating it is yummier than theirs though – is yours?

What are some good things to do with avocado?

I’ve decided I’m going to start liking avocado (LOL) because they are so good for you and they are a safe food for my medical condition. Please note that I can’t eat high fat (I realize avocadoes have some fat) and I cannot eat dairy. Thanks!

Some other popular meals that are in Honduras that are must tries are

Burritas: they consist of a chopped meat, refried beans, homemade cheese and avocados, all rolled up into a crispy tortillas. These are not to be mistaken for burritos they are quite different.

Tamales: A major addition to the cuisine in Honduras is Tamales. They include vegetables or potatoes as well as chicken or pork. But beware if you by them off the corner street sometimes the chicken bones are left in there and can easily make you choke. But, major restaurants are going to be safer from visiting gringos to eat at anyway.

Pastelitos de Carne: This includes deep-fried flour pastries filled with meat, rice and/or potatoes. But, any combination of meats, chicken, and pork. Along with a variety of different vegetables so be daring and try a variety.

Snacks & Sides in Honduras:

Anafres: This a  traditional Honduran snack usually served before the main course. It contains hot black beans and cheese dip served with corn chips.

Tostones: This is a deep crunchy plantain this is the staple of traditional Honduran cuisine. It is also known to natives as Platanos fritos.

Ceviche: This is another traditional snack that is truly Honduran. It is made up of raw fish, shrimp or conch and is mixed with tomatoes, onions, barley or cilantro, and is marinated in juice. It is then served with hot tortillas and chips and is something to try if your near the coastal regions.

Honduran Desserts:

Of course now we get to the good stuff traditional Honduran desserts..

Tres Leches Cake: It is just as it is named it is a cake that is made with three different types of mike. Each one that provides for a eventful flavor it includes evaporated milk, sweetened milk, and milk cream.

Arroz con Leche: This particular cake is soaked in sugar and hot milk, cinnamon and some homegrown traditional spices. It is also referred to the Honduran rice pudding.. a must try for any dessert lover.

Beverages in Honduras:

Of course what is a vacation without trying some of the local beers or liquors you might come across. Some of the more popular brands of beer in Honduras are Salva Vida, Barenea, and Port Royal. But if your really in the mood or daring you may want to seek out Giffity and Fiery Garifuna liquor.

Of course with any visit to a foreign land always make sure you are aware of what you are eating and that no allergies are present that may make you sick. They cook there food differently so even in “American” restaurants the food will taste different. So be prepared and most of all enjoy yourself and indulge in this wonderful Cuisine.

i would have as my last meal,
crab and avocado salad to start, steak chips mushrooms with pepper sauce and for dessert raspberry cheescake with haagen daz vanilla icecream and double cream and fresh raspberries.
all washed down with 2 bottles champagne and a big fat cigar. even though i dont smoke! and you?

Interesting question:

In a country that has capital punishment as a “reward” for prisoners that have committed what society considers
crime(s) “worthy of death”, it seems almost celebratory that the “prisoner of the hour” gets to eat like a King before being executed. And, here in California, we do it like we do our animals: lethal injection. It doesn’t matter whether the criminal hacked up 25 people and left them to die in agony, BUT, at the tax payer’s expense, WE’RE supposed to pay for the “about to be executed” last meal, and ANYTHING they want……Sad commentary on society…..

If I were in that situation, I’d want NOTHING, I’d just say “get it over with, boys” and let it be……Criminals that commit murder and then “put gently to sleep” seems inane……..

But traveling there a trip would not be complete without tasting a fresh catch of shrimp, lobster, or the common favorite among natives the conch which is pronounced caracol in Spanish.

In the larger cities of the country like Tegucigalpa, and San Pedro you would be hard pressed to find a variety of American restaurants sine they keep popping up.  You will be able to eat at some of your favorite us restaurants like T.G.I. Friday’s pizza hut, KFC and even cinnabon.

Some other popular meals that are in Honduras that are must tries are

Burritas: they consist of a chopped meat, refried beans, homemade cheese and avocados, all rolled up into a crispy tortillas. These are not to be mistaken for burritos they are quite different.

Tamales: A major addition to the cuisine in Honduras is Tamales. They include vegetables or potatoes as well as chicken or pork. But beware if you by them off the corner street sometimes the chicken bones are left in there and can easily make you choke. But, major restaurants are going to be safer from visiting gringos to eat at anyway.

Pastelitos de Carne: This includes deep-fried flour pastries filled with meat, rice and/or potatoes. But, any combination of meats, chicken, and pork. Along with a variety of different vegetables so be daring and try a variety.

Snacks & Sides in Honduras:

Anafres: This a  traditional Honduran snack usually served before the main course. It contains hot black beans and cheese dip served with corn chips.

Tostones: This is a deep crunchy plantain this is the staple of traditional Honduran cuisine. It is also known to natives as Platanos fritos.

Ceviche: This is another traditional snack that is truly Honduran. It is made up of raw fish, shrimp or conch and is mixed with tomatoes, onions, barley or cilantro, and is marinated in juice. It is then served with hot tortillas and chips and is something to try if your near the coastal regions.

Of course now we get to the good stuff traditional Honduran desserts..

The first one is my personal favorite

Tres Leches Cake: It is just as it is named it is a cake that is made with three different types of mike. Each one that provides for a eventful flavor it includes evaporated milk, sweetened milk, and milk cream.

Arroz con Leche: This particular cake is soaked in sugar and hot milk, cinnamon and some homegrown traditional spices. It is also referred to the Honduran rice pudding.. a must try for any dessert lover.

Of course what is a vacation without trying some of the local beers or liquors you might come across. Some of the more popular brands of beer in Honduras are Salva Vida, Barenea, and Port Royal. But if your really in the mood or daring you may want to seek out Giffity and Fiery Garifuna liquor.

Of course with any visit to a foreign land always make sure you are aware of what you are eating and that no allergies are present that may make you sick. They cook there food differently so even in “American” restaurants the food will taste different. So be prepared and most of all enjoy yourself and indulge in this wonderful Cuisine.

The borders of Mexico include the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and the Gulf of Mexico, so there is no shortage of sea. This also means that fish and seafood are bountiful and there are a lot of Mexican recipes incorporating seafood or fish as an ingredient. Perhaps it surprises you that fish and seafood are an integral part of Mexican cuisine but the Mexican people love to use seafood and fish in their meals.

With so many miles of coastline, it is inevitable that the bounty of the ocean would become an important part of Mexican cuisine and there are a great many wonderful Mexican fish and seafood recipes to try. If you have never sampled any of these dishes for yourself, prepare for a very special treat indeed.

Ceviche

One of the many Mexican seafood recipes, which everyone owes it to themselves to try at least once, is ceviche. This is a dish where seafood (usually shrimp, octopus or squid, though mackerel and tuna are also common) is “cooked” by marinating it in limejuice. Limejuice contains acids, which denature the proteins in the seafood or fish, and this gives a very similar effect to cooking with heat. However, it should be noted that if other shellfish are served as part of a ceviche that they are commonly cooked beforehand to ensure safety.

Other than limejuice, Mexican recipes for ceviche often include onion, cilantro, and chili peppers, salt and sometimes avocado. Ceviche is a common dish throughout central and South America, with each country having its own variation on the dish – but a lot of food connoisseurs prefer the Mexican style of ceviche to other countries’ takes on this dish. You may see this dish served with crackers, on a tostada or even as the filling for a taco!

A La Veracruzana

The Mexican state of Veracruz has a very long coastline and as you would expect, Veracruz is the birthplace of many Mexican seafood recipes and even a style called “Veracruzana.” This entails cooking fish or seafood in a tomato sauce enlivened with olives, capers, and chilies. This tangy, spicy complement is popular with shrimp and red snapper. There are also many other seafood dishes and fish dishes making use of it.

A La Plancha

The “A la Plancha” method is a popular way of cooking fish in Mexico. This is a culinary technique, which originated in Spain and came to the new world with the conquistadors. A metal plate is placed over an open flame and the fish is grilled on this plate, rather than directly over the heat itself. This is a cooking method, which is also often used to grill steak as well as fish. It allows for a more even distribution of heat than cooking fish directly on the grill and prevents the common problem of having the fish stick to the grill.

The information here barely scratches the surface when it comes to the topic of seafood in the broader context of Mexican food. There would not be enough space to list all the kinds of Mexican fish and seafood recipes here because there are so many – which means that there are a nearly limitless number of different dishes to explore, enjoy and of course most excitingly of all, try your hand at cooking in your own kitchen!

From mild to extra spicy hot, we love our salsa and I’m not referring to the sexy Latin dance, but to the popular dip that’s added to everything from nachos to eggs and just about anything in between. People love salsa so much, it is now considered to be more popular than the beloved ketchup even! With this much salsa being consumed, it’s a good thing that the sauce is a healthy and good for you food containing very few calories, no fat and plenty of vitamin C and other nutritious components.

The combining of chilies, tomatoes and spices is thought to have originated with the Incas who apparently loved to add salsa as a condiment to their dishes. Now days, there’s no limit to the types and varieties of salsa to be sampled. Although the most popular, salsa is not just for chips. In fact, how about having a nice fruit salsa for breakfast? Yes, fruit salsa is a delicious treat. Another great salsa alternative is with an avocado or guacamole salsa. Salsa recipes can be roasted or made with uncooked ingredients depending on your tastes and the recipe. There are tons of salsa recipes and the many ways of adding them to food is limited only to the imagination.

Do you think you’d like to try your hand at making your own fresh salsa? Not only is making salsa fun, but the results, if done correctly (and it’s hard to mess these up folks) are delicious. Serve your own fresh salsa with homemade nachos or on a yummy omelet at either breakfast, lunch or dinner. 1 medium onion, chopped

Just a little cilantro – Unless you like cilantro a lot, then add more

Pinch of fresh basil

2 cloves garlic

Juice from a whole lime

1 tomatillo, chopped

1 jalapeno pepper with the seeds out – Unless you like it hotter, then leave the seeds in.

Salt and pepper as you like it ;-)

Mix all the ingredients in your food processor and process until finely chopped. Makes about 2 cups of yummy fresh salsa.
