Avocado recipe that isn't salad or guacamole?

I have 10 medium avocados which will ripen at the same time. I'd like to make something creative with them other than a guac, with a salad or as a condiment to a main course.

Using half of an avocado for a salad bowl, fill with your own version of shrimp salad. One half avocado with shrimp salad served on lettuce is basically one serving.

Always great in a sandwich or wrap with tuna, chicken, turkey or shrimp.

Stuffed Avocado Chicken with a light breading of macadamia nuts. Fry and finish cooking in oven.

Chipotle Avocado Corn Chowder

Ingredients
2 1/2 cups organic plain soy milk
2 1/2 cups frozen organic white and/or yellow corn, defrosted
1/4 cup organic silken tofu
1 large ripe avocado, peeled and diced
3-4 canned chipotle peppers, drained and rinsed
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
black pepper to taste

Directions:

Combine the soymilk, tofu, peppers, 2 cups of the corn, and 3/4 of the avocado, salt, and pepper in a blender or food processor. Puree until smooth. Add the remaining corn and avocado. Pour into a pot and heat until warm throughout.

Avocado Shrimp Bisque

INGREDIENTS
3 avocados
1 (14.5 ounce) can chicken broth
2 cups milk
1 teaspoon lemon juice
2 teaspoons minced onion
1/2 pound cooked fresh shrimp
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper

DIRECTIONS
Cut avocados in half. Discard pits. Spoon meat into a small bowl.
Chop cooked shrimp.
In a medium saucepan, combine avocado, chicken broth, whole milk, lemon juice, and chopped onion. Heat slowly to boiling, stirring frequently. Add chopped shrimp, along with salt and pepper. Heat through, but do not boil. Remove from heat. Adjust seasonings to taste. May be served hot or cold.

Pasta with Avocado and Tomato

Ingredients
1/2 package spaghetti
2 fresh tomatoes, cut up in cubes
1 avocado, cut up in cubes
3 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 cup olive oil
parmesan cheese, optional

1 cup pecans, chopped
salt & fresh ground pepper

Directions

3. Add garlic, chilli, rosemary and capsicum. Cook 3 minutes.
4. Add cooked pasta, avocado, pecans and remaining oil.

Shrimp and Garlic

Palta con Crema de Salmon

4 oz. cooked or smoked salmon, cut in small pieces
1 green pepper, seeded and chopped
2 tbsp. mayonnaise

Chili is one of those great dishes that can be served in tons of different ways and goes good with many delicious side dishes. But if you’re thinking about serving chili the next time you have friends over for dinner or to watch the big game or when the weather starts getting cooler, here are some great ideas you might want to use.

Making Your Chili Even Better

Even if you already make the best chili on your block or at your tailgate parties, you could spice it up with some toppings. Of course, you’ll find some of the traditional items on the list: shredded cheeses, sour cream, oyster crackers or crumbled tortilla shells (choose the ones with a hint of lime for an nice touch), saltine crackers, or even hot sauce.

But those are a little bit basic. If you’re talking about advanced chili topping for the chili connoisseur, then you’ll want to shop around in your produce department or farmer’s market. Adding scallions, green onions, cilantro, or avocado can give your chili a little color and extra taste. A dollop of guacamole instead of sour cream (or with sour cream) can also be scrumptious, especially if you make it homemade. Jalapenos are also nice for a kick and should be added by the individual consumers of the chili - not everyone likes the spice. Red onion or salsa can be nice additions, too.

Not Just for Bowls

Chili isn’t soup so it doesn’t have to be served alone in a bowl with a spoon. Instead, get creative with how you serve this dish. You can use Fritos for dipping or pour the chili on top of a baked potato, French fries, pasta (some people even add spaghetti or macaroni pasta to their chili), rice, taco shells, hamburgers or hot dogs, cornbread, or even scrambled eggs.

Chili goes good with almost any food but make sure to account for the potential messiness. Always have extra napkins.

Great Side Dishes

When you’re serving chili, it’s definitely hearty enough to be a main dish. And while some people like to eat their chili by itself, having some complementary side dishes can enhance the dish’s flavor immensely. Cornbread is a delicious and traditional addition to chili. If you’re trying to give your meal a Tex-Mex flavor, you could make Mexican cornbread with peppers, some shredded Colby/Jack cheese, and some kernel corn or if you want to make it spicier you can cut up pieces of jalapeno to add into the cornbread mix.

Black bean and corn salad is another choice. The salad, which is served cold or at room temperature, includes black beans, cubed cheeses, roasted corn, green onions, bell peppers, picante sauce, herbs, olive oil, and a few other tasty items. You can also toss in other items you love, such as avocados.

Another idea is a Southwest Vegetable salad that includes lettuce, colorful red peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, onion, cilantro, and some toasted pumpkin seeds. This dish has just as much color as flavor and has a very delicious flavor especially when enjoyed along with a bowl of chili.

fast ripening avocados
fast ripening avocados
how do i get avocados to ripen faster?

i got avocados for .25 a piece but they are hard as rocks.
how can i get them to ripen?

Steps:
1. Allow hard avocados three to five days to ripen at room temperature. A ripe avocado is soft to the touch.

2. Store avocados in a paper bag. Put an apple in the bag to ripen them more quickly.

3. Store ripe avocados in the refrigerator for up to one week.

4. To remove the seed from an avocado, cut in half lengthwise (going around the pit), and separate the avocado into two halves. If the avocado is ripe, this should be easy. Lightly knock your knife into the pit, so that it sticks there. Give the knife a small turn to the right or left and lift up to remove the pit.)

another suggestion..
if you have a rice container.. place it inside if you want to eat 2 or 3 pieces then do the other on the procedure above..

Looking for a delicious and healthy summer recipe? You are going to love this. My inspiration for making this salad came after eating a very similar dish at a popular restaurant that I frequently visit. Actually, this is something my Wife and I like to do every once in a while. After we eat a dish that we are particularly fond of, we like to go home and try and re-create the recipe without knowing the ingredients. Try it... It's a fun way to see just how sensitive those taste buds really are....

FARMERS MARKET

I am fortunate enough to have a wonderful farmers market not too far from my home. There is just something special about shopping for produce in a farmers market. The variety and quality of the produce found in my local farmers market is far superior to the boring old supermarket. I know I am getting as close to organic as possible when I shop there, so if you have one near you, I highly recommend you visit and see what they have to offer. Usually the folks there are very helpful and knowledgeable about their products so don't be afraid to ask questions.

INGREDIENTS

Here are the ingredients you will need to make this wonderful salad:

- 1 Pound of Chicken Cutlets Grilled and Cut Into Strips - I like to use the thin sliced chicken as it cooks really fast and is easy to cut into strips.

- Southwestern Spice Rub:

2 tablespoons chili powder
2 tablespoons paprika
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon salt
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon dried oregano

- 8 Ounces of Mixed Salad Greens - I like to use a mix of Baby Romaine, Radicchio and Tango. If you can't find fresh greens, I recommend buying a bag of Fresh Express brand mixed salad greens. I have sampled a handful of salad brands and Fresh Express is by far the best in my opinion. The vegetable are always fresh, crisp and delicious. Everything is pre-washed and there are no preservatives.

2 Ripe Avocados Cut Into Small Chunks - It is very important that you choose ripened avocados. When looking for ripe avocados, do not choose them based on color. The best way to determine if they are ripe is by the squeeze test. Ripe avocados will have a firm flesh but will give slightly when squeezed. Unripened avocados are hard and will not give. You should be able to tell the difference. It may take a bit of practice though. If you are unsure, ask for help. A ripe avocado should slice like butter.

1 Large Green Bell Pepper Cut Into Squares

2 Ears of Roasted Corn (Instructions Below)

Half of a Red Onion Sliced

A Healthy Bunch of Fresh Cilantro Chopped

1/2 Cup of Shredded Cheddar Cheese

Ranch Dressing

DIRECTIONS

Step 1 - Soak the Corn, husks and all, in cold water for 30 minutes.

Step 2 - While corn is soaking, prepare the chicken cutlets. Lightly coat the chicken with olive oil and sprinkle some southwestern spice rub on both sides. Rub the spices into the chicken. Refrigerate and allow the chicken to marinate while the corn is soaking.

Step 3 - After corn is done soaking, preheat the oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit. Place corn directly on oven rack and roast for approximately 30 minutes or until the corn is relatively soft. Remove from oven and let the corn cool.

Step 4 - Preheat indoor or outdoor grill. Get the grill nice and hot. Grill chicken cutlets for about 2 minutes on each side, or until done. Remove from grill and allow to cool.

Step 5 - While the chicken and corn is cooling, add the remaining ingredients into a large bowl.

Step 6 - Remove corn from cob. Hold corn upright over a cutting board. Using a knife, gently cut the corn from the cob in a downward motion. Be careful!

Step 7 - Slice the chicken into thin strips.

Step 8 - Add the corn and chicken to the bowl with the rest of the ingredients.

Step 9 - Add the ranch dressing and toss the salad. The amount of ranch dressing you add is really up to you. It depends on your personal preference. I like to add about 1/4 cup.

Your done! Serve and enjoy!

NEPHROTIC SYSNDROM AND HOMEOPATHY TREATMENT DR HARSHAD RAVAL MD

Nephrotic syndrome is a nonspecific disorder in which the kidneys are damaged, causing them to leak large amounts of protein[1] (proteinuria at least 3.5 grams per day per 1.73m2 body surface area)[2] from the blood into the urine.
Definition : Nephrotic syndrome is a group of symptoms including protein in the urine (more than 3.5 grams per day), low blood protein levels, high cholestrol levels, and swelling. The urine may also contain fat, which can be seen under the microscope.
Kidneys affected by nephrotic syndrome have small pores in the podocytes, large enough to permit proteinuria (and subsequently hypoalbuminemia, because some of the protein albumin has gone from the blood to the urine) but not large enough to allow cells through (hence no hematuria). By contrast, in nephritic syndrome, RBCs pass through the pores, causing hematuria.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors :

Nephrotic syndrome is caused by various disorders that damage the kidneys, particularly the basement membrane of the glomerulus. This immediately causes abnormal excretion of protein in the urine.

The most common cause in children is minimal change Disease, while membranous glomerulonephritis is the most common cause in adults.

This condition can also occur as a result of infection, use of certain drugs, caner, genetic disorders, immue disorders, or diseases that affect multiple body systems including diabetes, multiple myeloma, and amyloidosis.

It can accompany kidney disorders such as glomerulonephritis, focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis, and mesangiocapillary glomerulonephritis.

Nephrotic syndrome can affect all age groups. In children, it is most common from age 2 to 6. This disorder occurs slightly more often in males than females.

Presentation
:

It is characterized by proteinuria (>3.5g/day), hypoalbuminemia, hyperlipidemia and edema. A few other characteristics are:

common sign is excess fluid in the body. This may take several forms:
Puffiness around the eyes, characteristically in the morning.
Edema over the legs which is pitting (i.e., leaves a little pit when the fluid is pressed out, which resolves over a few seconds).
Fluid in the pleural cavity causing pleural effusion. More commonly associated with excess fluid is pulmonary edema.
Fluid in the peritoneal cavity causing ascites.
Hypertension (rarely)
Some patients may notice foamy urine, due to a lowering of the surface tension by the severe proteinuria. Actual urinary complaints such as hematuria or oliguria are uncommon, and are seen commonly in nephritic syndrome.
May have features of the underlying cause, such as the rash associated with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, or the neuropathy associated with diabetes.
Examination should also exclude other causes of gross edema—especially the cardiovascular and hepatic system.

Investigations
:

The following are baseline, essential investigations

Urine sample shows proteinuria (>3.5 per 1.73 m2 per 24 hour). It is also examined for urinary casts; which is more a feature of active nephritis.
Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) shows Hypoalbuminemia: albumin level ?2.5g/dL (normal=3.5-5g/dL).
High levels of cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia), specifically elevated LDL, usually with concomitantly elevated VLDL
Electrolytes, urea and creatinine (EUCs): to evaluate renal function
Further investigations are indicated if the cause is not clear

Biopsy of kidney :

Auto-immune markers (ANA, ASOT, C3, cryoglobulins, serum electrophoresis)

Classification and causes :
Nephrotic syndrome has many causes and may either be the result of a disease limited to the kidney, called primary nephrotic syndrome, or a condition that affects the kidney and other parts of the body, called secondary nephrotic syndrome.

Primary causes
:
Primary causes of nephrotic syndrome are usually described by the histology, i.e., minimal change disease (MCD), focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) and membranous nephropathy (MN).

They are considered to be “diagnoses of exclusion”, i.e., they are diagnosed only after secondary causes have been excluded.

Secondary causes
:
Secondary causes of nephrotic syndrome have the same histologic patterns as the primary causes, though may exhibit some differences suggesting a secondary cause, such as inclusion bodies.

They are usually described by the underlying cause.

Secondary causes :

Hepatitis B
Sjögren’s syndrome
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
Diabetes mellitus
Sarcoidosis
Syphilis
Drugs
Malignancy (cancer)
Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS)[3]
Hypertensive Nephrosclerosis
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
Diabetes mellitus
Obesity
Kidney loss
Minimal change disease (MCD)[3]
Drugs
Malignancy, especially Hodgkin’s lymphoma

Differential diagnosis of gross edema:

When someone presents with generalized edema, the following causes should be excluded:
Heart failure: The patient is older, with a history of heart disease. Jugular venous pressure is elevated on examination, might hear heart murmurs. An echocardiogram is the gold standard investigation.
Liver failure: History suggestive of hepatitis/ cirrhosis: alcoholic, IV drug user, some hereditary causes.
Stigmata of liver disease are seen: jaundice (yellow skin and eyes), dilated veins over umbilicus (caput medusae), scratch marks (due to widespread itching, known as “pruritus”), enlarged spleen, spider angiomata, encephalopathy, bruising, nodular liver
Acute fluid overload in someone with kidney failure: These people are known to have kidney failure, and have either drunk too much or missed their dialysis.
Metastatic cancer: When cancer seeds the lungs or abdomen it causes effusions and fluid accumulation due to obstruction of lymphatics and veins as well as serous exudation. iagnosis

Diagnosis is based on blood and urine tests and sometimes imaging of the kidneys, a biopsy of the kidneys, or both.

Treatment includes:
General measures (supportive)

Monitoring and maintaining euvolemia (the correct amount of fluid in the body):
monitoring urine output, BP regularly
fluid restrict to 1L
diuretics (IV furosemide)
Monitoring kidney function:
do EUCs daily and calculating GFR
Prevent and treat any complications [see below]
Albumin infusions are generally not used because their effect lasts only transiently.
Prophylactic anticoagulation may be appropriate in some circumstances.[4]

Specific treatment of underlying cause:

Immunosupression for the glomerulonephritides (corticosteroids[5], cyclosporin).
Standard ISKDC regime for first episode: prednisolone -60 mg/m2/day in 3 divided doses for 4 weeks followed by 40 mg/m2/day in a single dose on every alternate day for 4 weeks.
Relapses by prednisolone 2 mg/kg/day till urine becomes negative for protein. Then, 1.5 mg/kg/day for 4 weeks.
Frequent relapses treated by: cyclophosphamide or nitrogen mustard or cyclosporin or levamisole.
Achieving stricter blood glucose control if diabetic.
Blood pressure control. ACE inhibitors are the drug of choice. Independent of their blood pressure lowering effect, they have been shown to decrease protein loss.  Dietary recommendations

Reduce sodium intake to 1000-2000 milligrams daily. Foods high in sodium include salt used in cooking and at the table, seasoning blends (garlic salt, Adobo, season salt, etc.) canned soups, canned vegetables containing salt, luncheon meats including turkey, ham, bologna, and salami, prepared foods, fast foods, soy sauce, ketchup, and salad dressings. On food labels, compare milligrams of sodium to calories per serving. Sodium should be less than or equal to calories per serving.

Eat a moderate amount of high protein animal food: 3-5 oz per meal (preferably lean cuts of meat, fish, and poultry)

Avoid saturated fats such as butter, cheese, fried foods, fatty cuts of red meat, egg yolks, and poultry skin. Increase unsaturated fat intake, including olive oil, canola oil, peanut butter, avocadoes, fish and nuts. Eat low-fat desserts.

Increase intake of fruits and vegetables. There is no potassium or phosphorus restriction necessary.

Monitor fluid intake, which includes all fluids and foods that are liquid at room temperature. Fluid management in nephrotic syndrome is tenuous, especially during an acute flare.

Complications
:

Venous thrombosis: due to leak of anti-thrombin 3, which helps prevent thrombosis. This often occurs in the renal veins. Treatment is with oral anticoagulants (not heparin as heparin acts via anti-thrombin 3 which is lost in the proteinuria so it will be ineffective.)
Infection: due to leakage of immunoglobulins, encapsulated bacteria such as Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumonia can cause infection.
Acute renal failure is due to hypovolemia. Despite the excess of fluid in the tissues, there is less fluid in the vasculature. Decreased blood flow to the kidneys causes them to shutdown. Thus it is a tricky task to get rid of excess fluid in the body while maintaining circulatory euvolemia.
Pulmonary edema: again due to fluid leak, sometimes it leaks into lungs causing hypoxia and dyspnoea.
Growth retardation: does not occur in MCNS.It occurs in cases of relapses or resistance to therapy. Causes of growth retardation are protein deficiency from the loss of protein in urine, anorexia (reduced protein intake), and steroid therapy (catabolism).
Vitamin D deficiency can occur. Thyroxine is reduced due to decreased thyroid binding globulin.
Microc

http://www.homeopathyonline.in/kidneydisease.htmytic hypochromic anaemia is typical. It is iron-therapy resistant.

Where can I find a homemade-all-natural conditioner recipe?

That I can pre-make use on a daily basis, without using perishables like eggs, avocado and mayo?

Try honey, olive oil, buttermilk, and non-bleached flour. The honey will be the conditioner and the flour is to make it a paste so you can put it in your hair. There are more at hairboutique.com, something like that. You can search for "honey for hair" and it'll bring up some natural hair recipe sites. I've done the whole thing once and it was conditioning, but not enough for my hair. I've also used honey by itself and mixed with olive oil and it's made my hair shiny and brought out my natural brown highlights that I haven't seen in about a year.

How do you prepare avocados?

for guacamole? The recipe says to mash the avacado with a fork until almost smooth or until desired consistency, but do I peel it and cut it first? Or do I just peel it? Oh, and the recipe is:

INGREDIENTS:
1 large ripe avocado
1 tsp lemon juice
1/4 cup salsa
1/4 tsp garlic powder
dash salt to taste
dash cayenne, chili powder or taco sauce (optional)
PREPARATION:
Mash avocado with a fork until almost smooth, or until desired consistency.
Add the rest of the ingredients and mix until well combined. That's it! Dip your chips and enjoy!

If I were to make enough for about twelve people, how much would I need of all of those ingredients? What I'm asking is, how many servings does this recipe make? It doesn't say, but maybe someone could figure it out...

Sorry, I'm a beginner in cooking...

Cut it in half, take out the seed and squeeze the "meat" into your bowl. It should come out easily if the avocado is ripe.

Do you like Mexican food? Do you have a favourite Mexican recipe? Perhaps you're just looking for something new to try. Here are a few recipes you might want to try.

Tamales - These are made from masa (corn tortilla dough) and filled with meat and cheese and steamed in corn husks. A true Mexican recipe that is delicious.

Mexican Flan - A Mexican dessert recipe, flan is custard with a caramel sauce and is simply to die for.

Cinnamon Crisps - A light and airy dessert made from flour tortillas coated with vanilla, sugar and cinnamon, these make for a nice sweet end to a delicious Mexican meal.

If you're looking for some good Mexican sauces to flavour your food, you might want to try mole. It is a dark complex sauce made with chillies, nuts and spices as well as Mexican chocolate, various fruits and vegetables and spices. The avocado has all the oil you need.

A good mask would be:

If you require to eat healthier, you might have thought about switching to an all raw diet. A lot of people think about it, but before they even start to research it, plenty of will discard the idea because it seems outrageous, difficult, or uninteresting. But with a small research, you'll find that all two of those assumptions are false.

Eating an all raw diet can be even simpler than preparing cooked foods; it won't require you to switch supermarkets or alienate your friends & family; & you will be able to find so plenty of recipes for raw dishes, you'll never must eat the same thing two times until you find the dishes that you love & require to make a habit of. Here is two simple recipe that will have you thinking "I cannot believe it is not cooked" for years to come.

Raw Tacos is two of those word combinations you probably never thought you would listen to, but when filled with a spicy bean substitute, guacamole & a citrus salsa, this seemingly contradictory combination melds in to a taste fiesta.

For the contents of the tacos, combine 1 cup each of sunflower seeds & fresh diced tomatoes, a tablespoon each of miso, cumin, chilli powder, extra virgin olive oil, & natural sea salt in a food processor. Blend well, adding two tablespoons of water, two at a time, as you blend. Two times it is well blended, toss in a half cup each of jalapenos & green onions, & a full sprig of cilantro, well chopped. Blend again for a short period of time to cut up these last ingredients, but leave some larger chunks behind. Spread the mixture thickly onto trays, & dehydrate overnight.

For the soft taco shells, you will require two cups of fresh corn, a cup of red pepper, 1 cup of ground flax, a squeeze of lime, a tablespoon each of ground cumin & chilli powder, & a teaspoon of natural sea salt. Chop the corn & bell pepper, then combine all the ingredients in a food processor, & mix until smooth, wet dough is produced. Spread the mixture thinly onto trays, & place in a dehydrator for two & a half hours. Flip, & continue for another two hours. Be sure never to exceed the 118-degree threshold, or you will be killing valuable enzymes. At this point, the dough should be flexible but dry to the touch. Cut the tortilla shapes out with a 3-4 inch cardboard template.

For the guacamole, mash two ripe avocados with a fork, & mix in a full sprig of finely chopped cilantro, the juice of half of a lime, & a whole jalapeno pepper, chopped. Leave chunky. The citrus salsa can be made by combining two cups of finely cubed tomatoes, the juice of a whole lime, & the same amount of cilantro & jalapeno as went in to the guacamole. Permit both the salsa & guacamole to rest for a few hours in the fridge to meld flavours.

To serve, fundamentally spoon a large dollop of the filling onto the middle of a tortilla, along with some guacamole & salsa. Fold up like a regular taco, & enjoy.

Food - male and female...avocado.....?

Do you think some foods are intrinsically female and some male? I don't mean like grammar but avocado, right, do you know any men that like avocado? It's a female thing, right? Like Black Cherry Yoghurt, natural yoghurt, green olives, Lambrini, lettuce. Male food is like spare ribs, pork pies, prawn vindaloo, balti pies. I know it's a generalisation but it's only for fun. Any other very male or female foods?
By your wonderful answers, I am starting to think that women eat food that will keep them alive for as long as possible whereas men tend to (in general) lean towards less healthy, more immediately gratifying food. Is this because cannot conceive of the next 10 years of their life or are they just thick?

I might agree about black cherry yogurt being feminine, but avocado? In Peru males and females had huge ripe avocado slices spread on bread and sprinkled with black pepper for breakfast. Black cherry yogurt, uni-sex. Natural yogurt, unisex and good for you. Green olives, no, sorry; Turkish women who are pregnant seem to have a taste for un-ripe green olives, which are very sour, but otherwise I would say uni-sex. What is or are Lambrini?. Lettuce, uni-sex - and not very sexy. What you are implying is that the male of the species are intent on consuming flesh. Nothing new there then.
Try putting a Black forest cake in front of a male and see what happens. If you fancy a bit yourself, cut a slice first and hide it.

Looking for something to spice up your love life? Forget the pills and potions and get in the mood with food!

Well before the pharmaceutical world stumbled upon Viagra whilst synthesising chemicals in attempts to create an anti-hypertensive medication, the world looked no further than what nature provided.

Historically, civilisations have always searched for that magic food that would imbue them with powerful sexual forces.

The Romans held a particular respect for the common carrot. Carrots were boiled in broth to release the sexual inhibitions of female captives. Even the Emperor Caligula was once said to have fed the entire Roman Senate a feast of carrots in the hope of watching them running sexually amok.

The Italians christened the tomato the “love apple” because it resembles the human heart and had doctors claiming it was a potent love potion.

The arrival of the new fig crop in Ancient Greece brought about ritual copulation, as they believed the fig was a sacred food associated with love and fertility. An open fig is thought to imitate the female sex organs.

The Aztecs referred to the avocado tree as the “testicle tree” because they believed the fruit hanging in pairs on the tree looked like male testicles.

So whether it’s the shape or the smell or the stimulating action of a food that revs up the libido, or being chock full of nutrients and chemicals that boost you and your partner’s sexual arousal and performance, look no further….

Zinc (yeah I know I sound like a broken record) is vital for the production of testosterone in men and for women to sustain lubrication. It’s no coincidence then that foods high in this mineral such as oysters and caviar have been used throughout the ages to improve sexual potency. Some oysters are actually able to change their sex from male to female and back again leading some to believe that consuming oysters gives one the experience of both the masculine and feminine sides of passion.

Essential Fatty Acids such as those found in fish, shellfish, flaxseed, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and walnuts, are the precursors of prostaglandins which are hormone-like substances that play a key role in sexual health.

Chocolate contains a natural amphetamine called phenylethylamine (PEA) which is also manufactured by the brain in response to feeling in love. Cheese contains 10 times more PEA than chocolate, making it even easier to get that loved up feeling.

B vitamins are needed to produce male and female sex hormones but are also important to ward off anxiety and depression and are vital for preventing fatigue, all of which are factors that can contribute to a stalled sex drive.

Capsaicin, the “heat” producing chemical found in chili peppers, stimulates our nerve endings and raises our pulse. This chemical is thought to release endorphins, which give our bodies a natural high.

Besides having a wonderfully suggestive phallic shape, Bananas are also high in B vitamins and potassium which are essential for sex hormone production.

Researchers at the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation (STTRF) in Chicago discovered that men were more aroused by food odours than any perfume. Blood flow to the penis was measured in 30 volunteers, and it was found that the scent men found most arousing was a combination of lavender and pumpkin pie. In a subsequent study, it was discovered that the combination of cucumber and Good & Plenty, a liquorice-flavoured movie theatre favourite in North America, stimulated women the most. Incidentally, the smell of flame-broiled meat was found to be one of the least exciting, actually causing a reduction in blood flow to the vagina.

So if you’re looking for a good use for your left over Viagra try mixing them in with your fresh cut flowers as it will double the time before the flowers wilt. Seriously. Or as some big brains in South America discovered, give ‘em to your hamster the next time he’s in from a cross continental flight. Apparently Viagra aids jet lag recovery in those furry little rodents! And to think somebody got funding for that experiment.
