nutritional value avocado pear

Food prices have risen faster in recent years than ever before. As many of us are feeling the pinch, it is time to reevaluate some of our food purchases. The term “organic” has been thrown around in the shopping aisles like sprinkles on the jelly donut you’re trying to avoid. It seems like hundreds of new “organic” products have emerged, all with a price tag about 30% higher than the regular option. Is it really worth the extra money, or are we all being duped with a clever marketing campaign to get us to buy essentially the same thing for a lot more?

It is true that organic growing practices are a lot better for the environment. So if you’re swayed by that fact alone, go organic. You actually are supporting practices that benefit the environment. If you want to go deeper into the nutritional value of organic vs. regular foods, research is mixed on that topic. Some studies suggest a higher level of anti-oxidants in organic foods. But other studies have failed to find a significant difference in anti-oxidant levels. The nutritional quality of fruits and vegetables goes down as soon as it is picked. You could argue that a cucumber that was picked yesterday and sold at a farmer’s market has more nutritional value than one that was picked 3 weeks ago and flown across the country to your local supermarket. Overall, it is hard to make a case for organic fruits and vegetables containing higher nutrient levels. Both organic and regular varieties offer similar nutrient content and health benefits.

One argument that does hold some weight is the fact that regular fruits and vegetables are grown with pesticides and herbicides. There is residue from these toxic substances that can build up in the body over time. This increases the risk of cancer and can cause other health complications like fertility problems.

Apples, peaches, and bell peppers have consistently shown the highest herbicide and pesticide residue. The lowest on the list are onions, avocados, and frozen corn.

If you avoid the top 12 on the list of foods that have the highest pesticide residue, you can actually reduce your herbicide and pesticide exposure by 90%.

Here are the top 12 to avoid.

Peaches
Apples
Bell Peppers
Celery
Nectarines
Strawberries
Pears
Imported Grapes
Spinach
Lettuce
Potatoes

The best way to eat healthy without breaking the bank is to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and to be smart about the balance between organic and regular. Try to buy them in season in the location where you live because they will be fresher. If the organic is close to the price of the regular option, picking organic is better for you and better for the environment. In the case that the organic option is just far too expensive, try to avoid the top 12 with consistently high levels of herbicides and pesticides and you should be in great shape.

Another important diet tip for protection against unwanted diseases is to take a daily multivitamin. Combined with lots of fruits and vegetables every day, a multivitamin will insure you’re getting plenty of all of the essential vitamins and minerals that you need to feel healthy and invigorated every day.

Body cleansing and colon cleansing are big business. Colon cleansing products are popular in health food stores and on the internet. You even find expensive body cleansing spa treatments. But beware – you cannot cleanse your body unless you eat the right foods.

Food can help your body cleanse or they can clog and irritate your body. Foods can contribute to built up waste in the form of excess weight and fat or help you lose fat. The right food will give you lots of energy while the wrong foods can leave you feeling depressed or cranky.

While it is true that your body has the ability to cleanse itself, you still need to do your part. For example, your body needs good nutrition to get or stay thin. You also need the right foods to help your immune system stay strong. At the same time, you need the right foods to help your body do the job of keeping waste moving out.

The best foods that cleanse your body are easily digested. Digestion is a process that takes a lot of energy from your body. If your body is busy digesting, it will not have the extra energy to cleanse itself. This is why it is said that you can cleanse your body or you can digest food, but you can’t do both.

The best foods that cleanse are fresh, whole, organic fruits and vegetables. These have no pesticides that can add to toxic build up and may clog your body’s natural cleansing ability.

Fresh fruits are considered to be natural cleansers for your body. They are full of fresh vitamin water to help your body flush waste. Your body can digest these very easily when eaten alone. It is best to eat fresh fruit first thing in the morning.

Fresh, raw vegetables stimulate your body’s natural enzymes to work. They work in two ways to help your body cleanse; they are more easily digested and they stimulate your body to digest other foods quicker. This gives your body more energy for the cleansing process.

Start your afternoon and evening meals with a fresh, raw green salad. Add a few other kinds of chopped veggies on top of your salad to get a wide variety of nutrition. Use a dressing made from olive oil, lemon juice and a dash of apple cider vinegar to give zest and even more strength to your cleanse.

Lightly steamed vegetables are the next best foods that cleanse your body. They are more easily digested than raw veggies. They also give you extra high quality nutrition so your body has the energy it needs to do all functions, including detoxing and cleansing itself. Eat extra steamed veggies with your meals in place of bread – which can clog your body’s natural cleansing ability.

Eat foods that contain Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s). EFA’s are known to help your body eliminate, or cleanse, harmful cholesterol from your arteries. These help reduce internal inflammation, which is a contributor to heart disease. They also help your body shed fat along with other waste and are excellent nourishment for your brain, helping you to keep your mood elevated.

Foods that contain the Essential Fat’s are tuna fish, halibut, salmon, walnuts, avocadoes, cashews, flax seeds, flax oil and olive oil. It’s best to get a variety. If you don’t eat many of these foods, try an EFA supplement from the local health food store to make sure that you get these benefits during your body cleanse.

Animal proteins are not normally thought of as foods that cleanse your body. However, if you are just starting, you might consider eating two to three portions a day, at least the first two or so weeks of your cleanse. This is because this type of protein helps your liver strengthen so it can detoxify waste that is dislodged and moving out. As this process happens, you want to make sure your liver is in good working order.

The foods in this category are lean, organic red meats, organic chicken and turkey, fish, and organic, free range eggs. These are all healthy versions of the non-organic animal proteins, which can contribute to a clogged system and disease. Keep your portions to about the size of your palm.

Filling your plate with the foods that cleanse while keeping meats, breads and grains to a minimum will help your body cleanse quickly and safely. If this is a big eating change for you, try adding a whole food vitamin and mineral supplement to make sure that you get all the nutrition you need.

While you are cleansing, follow the normal and healthy diet rules; drink plenty of fresh, spring water, don’t eat junk foods, minimize processed foods and don’t skip meals. These will definitely hurt all your body cleansing efforts. Eating the best foods that cleanse will ensure that you cleanse your body and that you haven’t wasted your time and money spent on cleansing products.

Is Organic Food really better? I believe it to be so. By buying organic fruits and vegetables will cut the amount of pesticides in your body by an unbelievable 90%.

In Canada, it has been said in Chatelaine September 2007 that: ‘no dairy product produced in Canada – organic or not – contain growth hormones.’ This is a good thing and thanks to a federal decision to ban bovine growth hormone. Some experts link high amounts of rbST to breast and prostate cancer. In Canada milk is so highly regulated that if even a trace of antibiotic is found the entire load is destroyed. But there is a possibility of pesticide residue that can still exist in conventional milk. So what would your choice be?

Organic Milk would be mine. Especially considering that milk is used in a lot of recipes.

Fruits and vegetables grown organically, certainly would be a positive choice and used in organic food recipes, it feels much safer knowing they are not covered in pesticides.

Did you know that the following veggies and fruits are in the top five produce that when you eat them, the contaminants show up in your body:peaches, apples, bell peppers, celery and nectarines. Onions and avocados score the lowest. More offenders of pesticide carriers are strawberries, cherries, pears, imported grapes, spinach, lettuce and potatoes. If you use organic, once again, you will have reduced approximately 90% of pesticides.

Even in Beef, the director of McGill Office for Science Society and department of chemistry admitted that there are trace amounts of hormones in conventional meat. Beef cattle is raised in a strictly controlled environment that is designed to produce the most meat at the least cost. We can’t blame the cattle rancher as it is simply a smart business decision to stimulate the growth of the rancher’s product. He’s not growing cows for fun. The regulation has to start at the top and the only way to influence the industry is to insist on organic food products. Would you believe that beer and eggs contain even more estrogenic compounds?

I believe that the more often you use a food, you should consider buying organic, especially knowing that eggs have estrogenic compounds in them and we use eggs to cook with frequently.

Organic Food Recipes are definitely the way to go to be healthy.

how to scoop avocado

Many people have heard of people with cancer turning to macrobiotics to detoxify their bodies and technically, its better to detoxify before you get sick, so here’s the scoop on this unique diet.  The philosophy of macrobiotics is based on energetics–the idea of balance between Yin (soft, slow, water, cold, tranquil, gentle, and corresponding to the night) and Yang (defined as hot, fire, restless, hard, dry, excitement, and corresponding to the day) energies in our life and diet. Although the macrobiotic dietary guidelines are only one aspect of a more significant spiritual system, it’s the diet that’s drawn the most attention in the West.  The diet is based on dietary principles of simplicity and avoidance of “toxins” that come from eating dairy, meats, and oily foods.  The standard macrobiotic diet consists of:

• 50% to 60% organic whole grains
• 20% to 25% local and organic fruits and vegetables
• 5% to 10% soups made with vegetables, seaweed, grains, beans, and miso
Other diet elements include occasional fresh white-meat fish, nuts & seeds, pickles, Asian condiments, and twig teas. The diet excludes vegetables such as potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, asparagus, spinach, beets, zucchini, and avocados and advises against eating non-local fruits, such as bananas, pineapples and other tropical fruits. Eating dairy, eggs, coffee, sugar, stimulant and aromatic herbs, red meat, poultry, and processed foods is discouraged.  The diet is pretty specific and possibly challenging with a busy schedule, but if you live in NYC, you could try restaurants like Souen, Ozu, and Angelica Kitchen for yummy macrobiotic meals.
Do I think this diet is good for you?  I’m sure most people could lose weight on such a limited diet but I wonder if there is sufficient protein for today’s busy lifestyle, and certainly for those involved in heavy exercise, it would be hard to get calorie needs met.  But I also feel that there is a right diet for everyone at different times in life, as we are all individuals with health always in flux.  Try to tune into your body’s needs and see whats right for you…To your health!

avocado from mexico

With this Swine Flu problem that now exists should I worry about foods that are imported from Mexico?

e.g. avocados and broccoli grown in and imported from Mexico.
Even the local “health food store” that sells organic fruits and vegetables imports avocados and broccoli from Mexico.
Wow.
It IS kinda scary what “What I Say” said about human resistance level to the virus.
“What people don’t seem to be thinking about is that it may mean human resistance has gone down (on the larger group level) to what is really the same virus strain.”

Crops are not grown in Mexico City. Flu viruses can stay alive on surfaces only a brief period if away from live tissue. There’s no way for a virus to bury itself inside produce. You should be more concerned about washing off produce well to get rid of pesticide residue.

The “new” swine flu is not so new. The swine flu of concern is a category A influenza, again not some never before seen “superflu” strain. Current vaccines Relenza and Tamiflu seem to be effective against it so it’s not so dangerously different. The difference is not in the virus but in the way the virus is being spread. Instead of the common pig to human transfer it appears the same virus can spread from human to human. What people don’t seem to be thinking about is that it may mean human resistance has gone down (on the larger group level) to what is really the same virus strain.

Unrefined avocado oil is considered to be one of the most healthful vegetable oils one can consume. It is a multi-purpose oil that can be used for culinary purposes (it is exceptionally high in Vitamin E  as well as monounsaturated fats), suitable for dressings and sauces as well as frying, due to its high smoke point of over 490 degrees. Organic avocado oil is also an excellent “carrier” oil for other flavors; avocado carrier oil is ideal for infusion with various herbs. In addition to its suitability as a comestible, unrefined avocado oil is also excellent for use as a cosmetic and the repair of damaged skin.

Historical Background

Bulk avocado oil comes from the fruit of the same name. The scientific name of the tree from which we obtain organic avocado oil is Persea Americana. It is native to the Caribbean coast of Mexico, and was apparently known to pre-Incan peoples of present-day Peru. The word avocado itself is derived from a word in the Nahuatl language, ahuacatl, which literally means “testicle.” This is most likely a reference to the shape of the fruit; among the Aztecs, avocados were believed to confer fertility and have aphrodisiac properties.

Europeans could not have known of the benefits of organic avocado oil much before 1500; the first written descriptions of the fruit dates from a Spanish geography text written about 1520, and the first English accounts were not published until over 180 years later.

Although not initially raised to obtain bulk avocado oil, the plant itself was first exported abroad in 1750, when the first avocado trees were planted in Indonesia. It arrived in Brazil about fifty years later; by the 1890s, avocado groves had been established in Rhodesia (present-day Kenya) and Australia. It was introduced in Lebanon and Palestine (present-day Israel) in 1908.

Today the plants that are the source of healthful organic avocado oil are grown primarily in Mexico. California, Australia, New Zealand and Kenya.

What Is an Avocado?

Although it grows on a tree and has a pit, it is actually considered a berry; that is, the source of bulk avocado oil is a fruit produced from a single ovary which ripens into a fleshy, edible pulp surrounded by a skin. Seeds are embedded within this pulp.

Botanically, the avocado is a member of the laurel family, along with the bay tree and cinnamon. There are over a dozen types of avocados grown today; however, the most common varieties are the hass avocado, which is a black-colored fruit with a pebbled skin texture and a bulk avocado oil content of approximately 19%, and the pinkerton, which has a smooth green skin.

Unlike most types of vegetable oils which are derived from seeds, organic avocado oil is extracted from the fleshy pulp of the fruit.

More About Avocado Oil

As mentioned earlier, avocado carrier oil is fine for creating different flavored oils. Although fine for humans and other primates, organic avocado oil contains a fatty acid known as persin, which can be highly toxic to domestic animals, particularly dogs, cats and horses.

Although avocados are a perennial crop in those regions in which they are grown (they can survive temperatures down to 26 degrees Fahrenheit), organic avocado oil can be expensive as relatively little of the crop is actually pressed for oil. It does however compare quite well to olive oil for taste and body; true gourmands consider the extra cost for organic avocado oil well worth it.

Colombia has some of the most delicious food in South America. Despite this fact, there are few American households that enjoy Colombian Recipes regularly – or even know much about them. When you want to add a little bit of flavor or variety of your meals, Colombian food is easily one of the best choices, as you will have dishes that few people have ever tried in their own home.

Examples of Traditional Colombian Dishes:

  • Lechona

Commonly found in both Panama and Colombia, Lechona is pork stuffed with peas, onions and rice, and cooked for an impressive 10 hours in a brick oven to bring out its best flavors. Many Colombian Recipes add a Colombian corn bread to enhance its flavor.

  • Sanchocho

Sanchocho is a type of South American soup. Ingredients differ by region, but in Columbian recipes it is common to find potato, vegetables, and nearly any kind of meat imaginable. Each region uses different meats and vegetables, so even Columbian recipes can differ quite a bit.

  • Aijaco

Another soup, Aijaco is a type of Columbian potato soup that often has large chunks of meat. In most Columbian recipes the meat will be chicken. You will also find corn, various herbs for flavoring. Like many of the Columbian meals, Aijaco started as a food for peasants before slowly gaining acceptance as a main stream dish.

  • Bandeja paisa

Of all of the Columbian recipes available, Bandeja paisa is one of the few that has very strict rules as to what constitutes the “True” dish. The Bandeja paisa contains at minimum 13 different ingredients (these ingredients include white rice, ground meat, red beans, pork rinds, friend eggs, plantain, chorizo, arepa, Hogao saunce, avocado, black pudding, mazamorra, and panella) which are served in a variety of different bowls- it must not be served in a regular plate, and the quantity of many of these items needs to be fairly high. Some areas adjust the ingredients, but those that do are said to not be caring the authentic style.

  • Asado

Asado itself is not necessarily a meal. Rather, it is the way that meat is cooked in order to get a certain type of flavor. Though it most often uses beef, it is usually complemented with other meats including chicken, steak, and goat. The meat is fired up in a traditional manner, and most Columbian recipes will add a side salad and some bread to make the meal more traditional.

Finding Columbian Recipes That Suit Your Needs

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Columbian food is that few people have truly experienced it. Though often a variation of other, more popular South American cuisine, the food itself almost always started as food for peasants before its flavors were more mastered and designed to reach the palates of food enthusiasts. You can find recipes for the Colombian dishes above and many others quickly and easily on the FoodieView Recipe Search Engine at www.foodieview.com. Most people don’t realize that their lifestyle is the primary cause of their heartburn. Although it’s mainly caused by the foods and drinks they consume, some of it is caused by other things that can be changed to prevent the acid reflux and heartburn. Over the years I finally realized that with a few changes and eating the recommended foods that are natural cures I was able to cure my heartburn and acid reflux.

Here are a number of simple lifestyle (mostly common sense) changes I made which helped me cure my heartburn and acid reflux. I recommend you give these a try before taking any medicine.

The list of foods and beverages that cause heartburn is quite extensive and likely includes many foods you love. You may have to give up some of them or at least cut way back on them. Not all of the same foods and drinks trigger heartburn or acid reflux the same symptoms in everyone. You should keep a diary of what you eat to find out which food and drink affects you.

The foods and beverages I’ve listed here affect almost everyone to a degree. Some of them only affect a person when combined with others. Onions, garlic, tomatoes and citrus fruits are all heartburn triggers. High fat foods like cheese, meat, avocadoes, salad dressing, etc. can also cause heartburn or acid reflux. All deep fried foods or ones fried in oil should be avoided. Spicy foods of all types can also cause problems. Beverages such as coffee, hot chocolate, citrus fruit juices and carbonated beverages should be avoided also.

Along with avoiding the foods and beverages that can cause heartburn or acid reflux there are a number of others changes you can make that are good preventative measures. These are the ones I used to cure my heartburn and acid reflux.

Just because you’re eating the right foods doesn’t mean you should overeat. Too much of any food could cause heartburn. Try to eat smaller portions at meal time and better yet eat four or five smaller meals instead of the three big ones.

Always sit down to eat and then eat your meal slowly, putting your fork down between bites. This way you will feel full with out eating as much food. The amount of food you eat is more important than the kind you eat.

Drink the recommended amount of water to dilute the acid and to prevent dehydration while exercising. It will also fill you up so that you don’t eat too much.

Never go to bed or lay down with a full stomach, wait at least two to three hours after eating. I either walk or ride my stationary bike after eating which helps with my digestion.

Trying to lose some weight will also help relieve some heartburn symptoms. Just by following these suggestions and not even trying to diet I lost 20 pounds, which was a bonus to losing the heartburn.

Either quitting or cutting down on smoking will help as nicotine can weaken the sphincter that controls the opening from the esophagus and stomach allowing acid to enter the esophagus from the stomach.

You should stay away from alcohol. If you need to unwind after a hard day, do some exercise in place of a drink. If you’re at a party you can drink soda water with a slice of lemon.

Wait at least two hours after a meal before exercising. Even though I walk or ride my bike right after eating, I would wait if I was going to lift weights or do something strenuous.

If heartburn or acid reflux is a problem when you go to bed, raise the head of your bed (put blocks under the legs) to make your head and chest higher than your feet. Don’t try to use pillows because your head will be at an angle that can make your heartburn worse by putting pressure on your stomach.

I found that utilizing these tips and eating the right foods keeps me heartburn and acid reflux free. I do slip once in a while but I’m able to cure it quickly due to my good foundation in prevention.

how to pick ripe avocados

Any tips for picking out ripe avocados?

They should give slightly when squeezed gently, but should not be mushy.

Fresh juice from fruits and vegetables can provide you with the
vitamins and minerals needed to optimize your health.  Adding
fresh juice to your diet will give you increased energy, a
glowing skin, and a strong immune system.

I’ve got you tips and tricks that you’ll find helpful when
juicing fruits and vegetables:

Picking the right juicer.

* When purchasing a juicer, choose one that yields as much
juice as possible.  There are juicers that eject the pulp out of
the machine, thus producing less juice than juicers that keep the
pulp in the strainer basket.

* A good juicer should have no more than 450 watts of power
rating.  More powerful juicers produce more heat which can
destroy the nutrients in fruits and vegetables.  On the other
hand, juicers with very low power specs can break down easily
for trying to work hard to extract the juice.

Picking the right fruits and vegetables.

* Fresh and organic fruits and vegetables are always better
than non-organic ones.  Non-organic produce have been treated
with pesticides and synthetic chemicals which are toxic to
humans.

* If you are unable to purchase organic produce, make sure
that you wash the fruits and vegetables thoroughly in lukewarm,
soapy water.  Non-organic root crops like carrots and rhubarbs
should be peeled

* Buying fruits and vegetables in their peak seasons can cut
costs for your juicing ingredients. Strawberries and
watermelons, for example, cost cheaper during summer.

* Do not juice fruits and vegetables that are too ripe, as
these already contain natural chemicals that can be toxic.

Juicing the Fruits and Vegetables

* Fruits with low water content, like bananas and avocados,
are not suitable for juicing.  These fruits are best prepared
using blenders.

* When juicing leafy vegetables, form them into compact balls
or rolls before inserting them into the juicer feed chute.

* Empty the pulp basket once it’s full.  This is to enhance
the extraction of juice from the fruit or vegetable.

Serving and storing the juice.

* Filter the juice through cheesecloth or coffee/tea filter to
remove foam and remaining pulp.  A note, though: the pulp
increases the flavor and nutritional value of the juice, so
it’s okay to include them when serving the juice.

* Serve the juice immediately after juicing to maximize flavor
and nutrient content.  If you need to store the juice,  put it
inside an air-tight container to prevent the nutrient loss.  To
prevent discoloration during storage, you may add a few
teaspoons of lemon juice.

Avocado trees not yielding. We have 5 avocado trees, 4-5 years old not yielding any fruits. Can anyone help?

We have 5 Avocado trees, all healthy, 4-5 years old. No fruits sofar. Any ideas as to waht is to be done to make the trees yield fruits?

First of all, are you purchasing a tree from a nursery or growing a tree from seed? If purchasing a tree, you can probably expect to see your first fruit 3-4 years after planting the tree. If growing from seed, it can take anywhere from 5 to 13 years before the tree is mature enough to set fruit. When the tree does flower, expect a lot of flowers to fall from the tree without setting fruit. This is natural.

how to store ripe avocados

how to store ripe avocados

How do I know if an avocado is ripe? And how to store it?

I usually buy Hass Avocados. Sometimes they taste bitter, I think they’re ripe but I guess not. How should I buy them if I’m going to eat them within a day or two, should I buy the really soft mushy ones or a little harder? Also, if I only eat half, how should I store the other half to eat it later that day or the next day?

I always buy firm avocados and let them ripen on the counter. They are ripe when they give slightly when pressed. If I eat only half, I put the other half (with seed and skin) in a plastic bag and store in the refrigerator. The exposed flesh will brown a bit, but it can just be cut off if it bothers you.
