I had a taco salad the other day at a Mexican restaurant, and for the first time, I tried an raw avocado, and it was really good. I bought some avocados and want to incorporate it into my green salad.

avocado. wow. my fav. can be eaten in soooo many simple ways. by it;s self with ANY mix of onions(red white pearl yellow shallots) garlic tomato cilantro parsley salt pepper vin lemon lime any green spinach lettce anything it is such a versatile flavor. sub mayo in sandwhiches for avocado ( or dont sub just add avocado) smash it into your rice for veggie flavored rice. or add to chicken soups before serving. look into using avocados as your serving dish for many things.

There are many benefits to use avocado butter, not the least of them that it makes your skin look alive, vibrant and full of health. Add to that the fact that it is completely natural, and it becomes a very attractive choice as an addition to your range of preferred skin care products.

Can you prune an avocado tree?

Avocado trees grow huge, is there a way to prune them and keep them under 8 feet? I know we can do this with mangoes, not sure about avocado. Thanks.

Yes, it will be best time to do in the winter. After the branches are prune, you will expect to have less or sometimes none of avocados come back the following year due to the cutting. It needs time to recover their cut. Good luck.

Highly acidic foods are not good for our health. The foods that belong to this category are those that produce acid ash after our body cells have utilized them. And alkaline foods are simply those that produce alkaline ash residue after the process.

It will now be easier for you to distinguish what types of food you must consider and that will boost your immune system. If you are now living with acid ash foods, then you must be doing something to incorporate alkaline-rich foods into you diet more.

How to keep avocado from going brown?

When I prepare some baby food for my daughter, I only use half the avocado and wrap the rest and refrigerate it. The next day though, it turns completely brown (and very unappetizing). Anyone know some tricks for it to stay green for at least a day?

It needs some type of acid. Try lemon/lime juice squeezed over it and then wrap it in plastic wrap and put it in an air tight container. Avocados brown very easily.

Gammon Cooked in Cider and Sage

3 lb gammon
2 pints cider
6-8 cloves, plus extra for decoration
bouquet garni (A bundle of parsley stems, dried thyme and a large bay leaf, tied
together and left to float freely in broth, stock or sauce)
1 tbsp sage, dried
2 tbsp brown sugar

Soak the gammon overnight to reduce its saltiness. Place the gammon in a large saucepan, add the cider to cover, plus the cloves, sage and bouquet garni. Bring to a boil and then cover and simmer for 1 1/4 hours, turning the meat occasionally. When the gammon is cooked, strip off the skin but leave a layer of fat. Place the joint in a roasting pan, score a diamond pattern over it and decorate with brown sugar and more cloves. Bake in a hot oven 425ºF for 15-20 minutes until the outside is brown and crispy.

Chicken with Mango and Mint

1 large 3-4 lb roasting chicken
handful of fresh mint
3 tbsp mayonnaise
1 tbsp mango puree
1 tbsp mango chutney
1 tbsp whipped cream
1 tbsp fresh mint

Place the cleaned chicken in a roasting pan and add 1-1 1/2 inch of water around the bird. Place some fresh mint in the water and in the cavity of the chicken. Roast in a hot oven 425ºF for about one hour or until a skewer pushed into the flesh leaves a trail of clear liquid. Leave to cool, then cut the flesh from the bones and chop roughly. Mix all the other ingredients in a food processor and, once the chicken is cool, mix into the mango mayonnaise. Pack into a shallow dish and garnish with pieces of mango or sprigs of mint.

Tarragon Fish with Avocado

1 1/2 lb cod or haddock fillets
1 large ripe avocado
lemon juice
1 tbsp chopped fresh tarragon
salt and pepper to taste
melted butter
tarragon for garnish
24 sheets filo pastry

Remove all the skin and bones from the fillets and cut into 12 strips. Cut the avocado into 12 wedges and sprinkle both the fish and avocado with lemon juice before placing on separate plates. Brush one sheet of filo pastry with melted butter and place a second on top. Fold them in half and butter the top, then place two strips of fish and two of avocado in the corner, sprinkle with a little tarragon and fold the pastry over, fold in the sides and brush with butter. Finish wrapping the parcel and place it on a greased baking sheet with the join side down. Wrap the other five parcels in the same way and cook at 325ºF for 18-20 minutes.

Scotch Eggs with Sage

5 eggs
1 oz plain flour
salt and pepper to taste
8 oz pork sausage meat
2 oz wholemeal breadcrumbs, toasted
1/2 tsp dried sage

Hard-boil four of the eggs and leave to cool in cold water. Season the flour with salt and pepper. Work the dried sage into the sausagemeat, then divide into four. Using a floured board, work each piece into a circle large enough to cover an egg. Lightly dust the eggs with the seasoned flour, then place one egg in the center of each piece of sausagemeat. Mold the sausagemeat around the eggs and then pinch the edges to seal them firmly together.

Beat the remaining egg and use it to coat the Scotch eggs, then roll them in breadcrumbs. Deep-fry the Scotch eggs for about eight minutes until crisp and brown. Leave to cool.

Packing the Picnic Hamper

There are many other possibilities that you could include in a presentation hamper. Apart from the meat suggestions here, you could add jars of pickles and jellies. Giving a mixture of goodies that the recipient will like best is the main aim. You could also add some non-food herbal ideas, such as a small tussie-mussie or some herbal teas.

Really beautiful hampers can be hard to find, so a large basket could be used instead or even a big cardboard box covered in an attractive paper or some cotton fabric. Add plenty of ribbon and large labels for a really extravagant effect and what will be a very memorable present.

Avocados are native to Central America, where they’ve been grown for thousands of years and are a staple in many cultures. California and Florida are the largest producers of U.S. consumed avocados, and most of those are Haas (sometimes spelled Hass)–they account for 80% of sales.
There are a few other varieties available, one that stays green when ripe, as well as the large new “low-fat” types, which don’t have much flavor.
Avocados don’t begin to ripen until removed from the tree, where they can be held for several months in limbo. Once picked, they’re ready to eat in about a week.

Unrefined avocado oil is considered to be one of the most healthful vegetable oils one can consume. It is a multi-purpose oil that can be used for culinary purposes (it is exceptionally high in Vitamin E  as well as monounsaturated fats), suitable for dressings and sauces as well as frying, due to its high smoke point of over 490 degrees. Organic avocado oil is also an excellent “carrier” oil for other flavors; avocado carrier oil is ideal for infusion with various herbs. In addition to its suitability as a comestible, unrefined avocado oil is also excellent for use as a cosmetic and the repair of damaged skin.

Historical Background

Bulk avocado oil comes from the fruit of the same name. The scientific name of the tree from which we obtain organic avocado oil is Persea Americana. It is native to the Caribbean coast of Mexico, and was apparently known to pre-Incan peoples of present-day Peru. The word avocado itself is derived from a word in the Nahuatl language, ahuacatl, which literally means “testicle.” This is most likely a reference to the shape of the fruit; among the Aztecs, avocados were believed to confer fertility and have aphrodisiac properties.

Europeans could not have known of the benefits of organic avocado oil much before 1500; the first written descriptions of the fruit dates from a Spanish geography text written about 1520, and the first English accounts were not published until over 180 years later.

Although not initially raised to obtain bulk avocado oil, the plant itself was first exported abroad in 1750, when the first avocado trees were planted in Indonesia. It arrived in Brazil about fifty years later; by the 1890s, avocado groves had been established in Rhodesia (present-day Kenya) and Australia. It was introduced in Lebanon and Palestine (present-day Israel) in 1908.

Today the plants that are the source of healthful organic avocado oil are grown primarily in Mexico. California, Australia, New Zealand and Kenya.

What Is an Avocado?

Although it grows on a tree and has a pit, it is actually considered a berry; that is, the source of bulk avocado oil is a fruit produced from a single ovary which ripens into a fleshy, edible pulp surrounded by a skin. Seeds are embedded within this pulp.

Botanically, the avocado is a member of the laurel family, along with the bay tree and cinnamon. There are over a dozen types of avocados grown today; however, the most common varieties are the hass avocado, which is a black-colored fruit with a pebbled skin texture and a bulk avocado oil content of approximately 19%, and the pinkerton, which has a smooth green skin.

Unlike most types of vegetable oils which are derived from seeds, organic avocado oil is extracted from the fleshy pulp of the fruit.

More About Avocado Oil

As mentioned earlier, avocado carrier oil is fine for creating different flavored oils. Although fine for humans and other primates, organic avocado oil contains a fatty acid known as persin, which can be highly toxic to domestic animals, particularly dogs, cats and horses.

Although avocados are a perennial crop in those regions in which they are grown (they can survive temperatures down to 26 degrees Fahrenheit), organic avocado oil can be expensive as relatively little of the crop is actually pressed for oil. It does however compare quite well to olive oil for taste and body; true gourmands consider the extra cost for organic avocado oil well worth it.

How Do You Keep Fresh Green Of Avocado?

Someone told me lemon juice works. I tried that but didn’t work. How I can stop avocado becomes ugly black??

Try this:
If you’re using only half an avocado, cut it in half and scoop the avocado out of the half you’re using. Leave the pit in the remaining half, and then cover the exposed part of the remaining half with the skin from the half you scooped out. Leaving the pit in, and covering the exposed avocado with its own skin will keep it as green as possible.

The lemon/lime juice trick works well for guacamole or other avocado dips/sauces, but not very well for whole avocado.

Avocado and avocado oil offers so many benefits when used in your skin products. Did you know that avocado contains vitamins A, B1, B2 and D, lecithin, potassium as well as vitamin E. In addition to the vitamins it contains proteins and more than 20% essential fatty acids (amino acids). It is a sought after skin care ingredient because it has so much to offer.

Avocados are used in anti-aging products because of its nourishing and hydrating abilities. The Department of Food Engineering and Biotechnology, Technion Israel Institute of Technology in 1991 found that avocado oil significantly increases collagen in the skin which is why it is commonly found in antiaging products. Furthermore because of its deep penetration into the skin it is a perfect ingredient to combat dry skin. For those that suffer with eczema or psoriasis avocado offers healing properties that will relive dryness. Both avocado and avocado oil is gentle and well tolerated by those with sensitive skin.

In addition to its moisturizing and healing properties, it is also high in sterolins, AKA plant steroids, which are reported to diminish age spots and heal scars.

Below are a few avocado skin care recipes:

Facial Mask for Dry Skin
1/2 avocado
1 teaspoon almond oil (Note if allergic to nuts use different oil such as jojoba oil or olive oil). Even a vegetable oil in your cupboard will do.)
Mash avocado and then add almond oil or oil of your choice. Apply to face, avoiding the eye area, and let set for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water then cool water. Follow with toner and moisturizer.

Avocado Honey Face Mask – for dry skin
2 tablespoons of avocado
2 tablespoons honey
1 egg yolk
Mash the avocado, add the honey and egg. Mix until thoroughly blended. Apply to face avoiding the eye area. Let set 10 minutes then rise with warm water then cool water. Follow with toner and moisturizer.

Avocado Mask for Oily Skin
1 avocado, mash
1 egg white
1 tsp. lemon juice
Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until you get a mixture. Apply to a clean face with fingertips on the oiliest part of the face (T-zone). Let dry for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water then cool water, follow with toner and moisturizer.

Avocado’s can be hard to find and/or a little pricey if living in a northern climate, so here are some recipes that use avocado oil instead.

Dry Skin Cleansing Cream
1/2 oz. Beeswax
1 oz. Lanolin
2 oz. Almond Oil
1 oz. Avocado Oil
1 oz. Grapeseed Oil
2 drops Clary-Sage Essential Oil
2 drops Lemon Essential Oil
3 oz. Spring Water
Using a double boiler, melt beeswax, lanolin, and oils. Stir well. When melted, take off heat and add essential oils, then water. Wisk until cool.

i wanted to put the pit in water and start him growing, but can that still be done if he was refrigerated? it was for a couple of days.

Yes put it in water in sunny window, eventually it will start to open then plant it in sandy soil.
Mine bloomed even though I did not put them in water first.

Zucchini Crisp

5 cups sliced zucchini, peeled and seeded

1/3 cup sugar

Combine all of the above ingredients in a large saucepan. Cook the mixture until it starts to boil. Then boil the mixture for 15 to 20 minutes. Put the mixture in an 8- or 9-inch square pan.

Topping:

6 tablespoons butter, softened

1 cup flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

In a small bowl, combine the flour, salt, brown sugar, and baking powder. Mix well. Cut the flour into the mixture and combine until it is crumbly. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the zucchini mixture. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 40 to 45 minutes.

Avocado Pie

1 (3-ounce) package lime or lemon-lime jello

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 can (8-ounce) crushed pineapple

1 medium avocado

1 cup boiling water

2 tablespoons lime juice

1 package (3-ounce) cream cheese

1 cup whipped cream

9-inch graham cracker pie crust

In a large bowl, put the jello, salt, and boiling water. Stir the mixture until the jello is dissolved. Drain the pineapple juice into a measuring cup. Add the lime juice to it. Add enough cold water to make the mixture equal 3/4 cup. Add this mixture to the jello mixture. Put the jello mixture in the refrigerator until it is very thick. While that is cooling, peel and half the avocado. Cut up half of the avocado into small pieces. In a small bowl, mash the other half of the avocado until it is smooth. Add the cream cheese to the mashed avocado and mix until well blended. Add the cream cheese mixture, avocado pieces, pineapple, and whipped cream to the jello mixture. Mix well and put into the pie crust. Refrigerate until the mixture is firm.

Topping:

6 tablespoons butter, softened

1 cup flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

In a small bowl, combine the flour, salt, brown sugar, and baking powder. Mix well. Cut the flour into the mixture and combine until it is crumbly. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the zucchini mixture. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 40 to 45 minutes.

Avocado Pie

1 (3-ounce) package lime or lemon-lime jello

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 can (8-ounce) crushed pineapple

1 medium avocado

1 cup boiling water

2 tablespoons lime juice

1 package (3-ounce) cream cheese

1 cup whipped cream

9-inch graham cracker pie crust

In a large bowl, put the jello, salt, and boiling water. Stir the mixture until the jello is dissolved. Drain the pineapple juice into a measuring cup. Add the lime juice to it. Add enough cold water to make the mixture equal 3/4 cup. Add this mixture to the jello mixture. Put the jello mixture in the refrigerator until it is very thick. While that is cooling, peel and half the avocado. Cut up half of the avocado into small pieces. In a small bowl, mash the other half of the avocado until it is smooth. Add the cream cheese to the mashed avocado and mix until well blended. Add the cream cheese mixture, avocado pieces, pineapple, and whipped cream to the jello mixture. Mix well and put into the pie crust. Refrigerate until the mixture is firm.
