No one enjoys excess body fat. Aside from the fact that it does not exactly look appealing, excess fat can lead to a variety of problems that rob your energy levels, lead to numerous diseases (type 2 diabetes, heart diseases etc..) and steal your longevity potential.

If you are sick and tired of looking, feeling, and performing at sub par levels here are a few keys to FAT loss through effective strategies, nutritional supplements and exercise.

First, use your body measurements to track your progress rather than a scale. Our body is comprised of lean tissues (skeletal, blood, organ and muscles) and fat. Even though muscle takes up less space, it weighs four times as much fat as fat does. Muscle tissues imperative to fat loss, the more lean muscle tissue you carry on your frame, the more calories you burn throughout a 24-hour period. When it comes to bathroom scale, unfortunately, it is unable to differentiate between fat and muscle and is therefore cannot properly track your success. Take a good look in the mirror (they do not lie) and feel the way your clothes fit – and you will have a much better indication of your success.

Second, Maintain a healthy diet consisting of high fiber, low glycemic foods, fish, seafood, vegetables, fruits, poultry, lean cuts meat, nuts, and seeds. Here are some recommended food list:

In order for you to create a wise metabolism, have your body use fat as a primary fuel source, optimize your energy levels and increase lean muscle tissue (thereby further enhancing metabolism twenty hour each day). It is important to consume high quality foods at regular intervals throughout the day.

Third, Exercise- Exercise is no longer an option! This does not mean you have to run out and join a gym; it means you have to move your body on a regular basis. Incorporate both weight resistant training and cardiovascular exercise is a sure fire way to not only help you reach and maintain your fat loss goals, but it will help you feel fantastic!

Many conventional “weight loss” tactics accelerate water, muscle and bone loss, which can create an “illusion” of success. these unhealthy tactics promote more rapid reduction in total weight, calorie burning reduction, energy production and bone demineralization rather than fat loss. Basically you become a smaller fat person with these diets.

fried avocado rolls

fried avocado rolls
fried avocado rolls
does th is sound good to eat?

its for health class, has to be all healthy:

a lettuce leaf, avocado, chicken strips(not fried ones), tomatoe, and onion.

or the same thing but instead of avocado, small strawberry slices

all rolled into the lettuce to make a lettuce wrap.

sound pretty good?
if you know any really good easy recips for healthy snacks, plz help.
has to have 5 healthy ingrediants

That sounds pretty good! Just remember, just because avocados are in the fruit and veggies group doesn’t mean they are healthy. They actually are very high in fat and calories so they need to be used in moderation. I’m not so sure how the strawberries would taste in their place though. How about some of these ideas?!

Lean thinly sliced turkey or chicken, chopped green onions, sun-dried tomatoes, and lettuce wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla.

Omelette– 2 eggs (or 1 egg + 1-2 egg whites), chopped tomato, chopped bell pepper, chopped green or white onions, mushrooms, and low-fat shredded cheese (optional).

Tomato Mushroom Sauce
1 (24 ounce) can stewed tomatoes
1 (12 ounce) can mushrooms, in water
3 cloves garlic (or as many as you want)
1/2 cup fresh torn basil leaves
kosher salt (to taste)
cooked pasta or toasted pita bread
–Saute garlic in nonstick cooking spray over low to medium heat. Once garlic is tender, add mushrooms and tomatoes.
Mash tomatoes as the mixture becomes more sauce-like, about 10 minutes. Add basil close to the end of cooking time. You’ll know when it’s done!
*This is fantastic with toasted whole-wheat pita triangles! You can also serve this over whole wheat pasta.

Hope this helps

The Mediterranean diet has been around for hundreds of years and is aptly named for the Mediterranean region from where it originates. The people of the region represent many countries and enjoy varied food choices, and yet their basic diet philosophies are the same. The region consistently ranks high as being home to many of the healthiest people in the world. So how best can you adapt the strategies of the Mediterranean diet and incorporate the many medical benefits the Mediterranean diet menu offers.

Some basic tips and food choices to get you started.

The first place to start would be how we stock our pantry and refrigerator. It’s time to change the way we shop. This change may be drastic for some and just a slight modification for others.

Salads are a way of life here, as the salad is most often used as an appetizer utilizing many of the popular food choices found in the Mediterranean diet, as well as a side dish to the main meal. Olive oil is most often used as dressing of choice and it plays a major roll in the overall good health benefits found in the diet.

Unlike many diets today the Mediterranean diet encourages fat consumption. Not those fats of the deep fried variety, but rather monounsaturated and omega fats that can be found in foods like avocados, nuts, olives, olive oil and oily fish. These foods have been medically linked to lower blood cholesterol levels and better cardiac health and are readily found in many of the Mediterranean diet recipes.

Carbohydrates are also consumed on a regular basis in the forms of whole grains, found in breads, cereals and pastas. Herbs and spices are used to replace salt, and seasonal fruits and vegetables can be eaten in unlimited quantities. Excellent snack choices would be a variety of nuts such as walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts and especially almonds. Also consider fruits, and vegetables as great on the go snack choices.

Red wine has been linked to many excellent health benefits and has been a staple in the Mediterranean diet menu for centuries. You would be hard pressed to find a dinner table in the region without a bottle of wine to accompany the meal.  Moderation should be the rule here as those benefits diminish after 1 or 2 glasses. Consult your Physician first before consuming alcohol or consider replacing with grape juice, as it offers similar health benefits.

Saturated or trans fats are found in foods like butter and margarines as well as whole milks and ice creams and should be avoided as they have been medically linked to heart disease, stroke and obesity.  Red meats are eaten rarely; eggs and poultry are eaten in moderate amounts and dairy products like yogurts and goat cheeses can be eaten infrequently.

The way of life in Mediterranean countries also adds to the phenomenon of the Mediterranean diet as meals are celebrations often lingered over with the company of friends and family.  No meals on the go here or time spent in the drive thru.

Chili is one of those great dishes that can be served in tons of different ways and goes good with many delicious side dishes. But if you’re thinking about serving chili the next time you have friends over for dinner or to watch the big game or when the weather starts getting cooler, here are some great ideas you might want to use.

Making Your Chili Even Better

Even if you already make the best chili on your block or at your tailgate parties, you could spice it up with some toppings. Of course, you’ll find some of the traditional items on the list: shredded cheeses, sour cream, oyster crackers or crumbled tortilla shells (choose the ones with a hint of lime for an nice touch), saltine crackers, or even hot sauce.

But those are a little bit basic. If you’re talking about advanced chili topping for the chili connoisseur, then you’ll want to shop around in your produce department or farmer’s market. Adding scallions, green onions, cilantro, or avocado can give your chili a little color and extra taste. A dollop of guacamole instead of sour cream (or with sour cream) can also be scrumptious, especially if you make it homemade. Jalapenos are also nice for a kick and should be added by the individual consumers of the chili – not everyone likes the spice. Red onion or salsa can be nice additions, too.

Not Just for Bowls

Chili isn’t soup so it doesn’t have to be served alone in a bowl with a spoon. Instead, get creative with how you serve this dish. You can use Fritos for dipping or pour the chili on top of a baked potato, French fries, pasta (some people even add spaghetti or macaroni pasta to their chili), rice, taco shells, hamburgers or hot dogs, cornbread, or even scrambled eggs.

Chili goes good with almost any food but make sure to account for the potential messiness. Always have extra napkins.

Great Side Dishes

When you’re serving chili, it’s definitely hearty enough to be a main dish. And while some people like to eat their chili by itself, having some complementary side dishes can enhance the dish’s flavor immensely. Cornbread is a delicious and traditional addition to chili. If you’re trying to give your meal a Tex-Mex flavor, you could make Mexican cornbread with peppers, some shredded Colby/Jack cheese, and some kernel corn or if you want to make it spicier you can cut up pieces of jalapeno to add into the cornbread mix.

Black bean and corn salad is another choice. The salad, which is served cold or at room temperature, includes black beans, cubed cheeses, roasted corn, green onions, bell peppers, picante sauce, herbs, olive oil, and a few other tasty items. You can also toss in other items you love, such as avocados.

Another idea is a Southwest Vegetable salad that includes lettuce, colorful red peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, onion, cilantro, and some toasted pumpkin seeds. This dish has just as much color as flavor and has a very delicious flavor especially when enjoyed along with a bowl of chili.

carb avocado

Do you think I will look a little slimmer in 10 days with this low carb diet?

I am female, 5′9, 135 pounds, 21 years old. I have an event coming up in 10 days, I go to the gym and watch what I eat and I am already quite slim but just want to lose a couple of pounds or so before the event. Here’s my diet plan:

2 scrambled eggs made with organic cream, smoked salmon on top

string cheese

tin of tuna mixed with light mayo, green onions

5 organic almond clusters

roast chicken with feta cheese, red onion, cucumber, avocado
You don’t see a lot of protein? can you read?

i tried the low carb diet…u gotta add excercise as well

If the word “lunch” has become synonymous with “sandwich”, it’s time to get out of your rut! There are lots of low carb lunch possibilities.

Salads

We’re all familiar with the old fashioned chef salad –cut up cold cuts, cheese, and hard-boiled egg on a green salad (usually iceberg). But meal salads have become much more popular in restaurants and at home, in a variety limited only by the imagination.

Low carb “meal salad” tips:

  • Use lots of dark green salad greens, which are much richer in nutrients than the traditional iceberg lettuce. Now that bagged greens are in every grocery store, salad making has never been more convenient.
  • If you are using bottled dressings, check the label for carbs. Many “light” dressings have sugar added to make up for the loss of flavor when oil is reduced.
  • Choose dressings with oils high in monounsaturated fats, such as olive oil.
  • It is very easy to make dressings yourself – it literally can take less than a minute. Whip up an oil-based one in the bottom of the bowl, put the salad on top, and toss. For a creamy dressing, just mix some of your favorite herbs and spices into some mayonnaise. Thin down with water or lemon juice.

Examples of Salads include:

  • Greek salad (put extra protein on, such as hard boiled eggs, chicken, or seafood)
  • Chicken (cooked without breading, of course) atop salad greens, chopped snow pea pods, chopped red pepper, and walnuts
  • Low carb cole slawwith chicken, pecans, and bits of apple
  • Tuna salad with greens, tomato and avocado
  • Salmon on top of greens, blanched green beans, mushrooms, and sprouts
  • Chicken with greens, cucumbers, pecans, and crumbled blue cheese
  • Steak with greens, thinly sliced red onions, green pepper, and mushrooms

Roll ups and Wraps

There are three basic kinds of low carb roll ups:

  1. Lettuce: Roll “mushy” stuff, such as tuna, salmon, egg, or chicken salad up in a large lettuce leaf, along with anything else that sounds good (as long as you don’t overload it). (A similar alternative is to use the “protein salad” as a dip, and use celery, Bell pepper, cucumber, etc as dippers.)
  2. Meat: Roll cheese and veggies up in a slice of roast beef, ham, etc.
  3. Low Carb Tortillas: Roll whatever you want up in a low carb tortilla and make a “wrap”. My husband eats hot dogs this way.

Soups

Soups are very versatile, and can provide a vehicle for leftover meats and vegetables. Most soup recipes can be low carb if you just take out the starch (noodles, rice, potatoes). There are a few low carb canned soups, but the vast majority are not – you have to read labels carefully. Make up a big pot of soup and freeze portions.

Leftovers

The easiest lunch of all – just make extra at dinner and have it for lunch the next day!

More Advices:

  • Pack lunches the night before and store them in the refrigerator overnight.
  • Purchasing lunch foods in larger containers instead of single-serve packages costs less.  Buy yogurt and applesauce in larger containers and spoon it into a smaller container for lunch.  Buy quality bulk bin items, including fresh-ground peanut butter, nuts, dried fruits, and granola.
  • Test out new lunch box recipes at home before they make it into the lunch pail.
  • Watch the temperature. Harmful bacteria grow best between 40 degrees F and 140 degrees F, so it’s important to keep perishable foods outside this danger zone as much as possible.

how to eat avocados

how to eat avocados
how to eat avocados
What is a good way to eat avocados?

I want to introduce them to my family, but how do I use them? Do you know any good recipies?

I love avocados!!! I make these things at home all the time:

- Tomato/ bacon/ avocado sammie.
- Curried chicken salad with mango chutney and avocado slices: take chicken, mayo and curry powder and combine. Spread mango chutney on a pita, add chicken and top with avo’s.
- Avo and tuna: mix a can of drained tuna with soy sauce and sesame oil. Put on toast points and add sliced avos.
- Avocado ice cream: 3 avos, 3 cups milk, 1 cup heavy cream, 3/4 cup honey, 1 teaspoon salt, juice of half a lemon. Blend in blender (add heavy cream last) and make according to your ice cream maker.
- Avo smothie: 1 banana, half an avo, 1 cup milk, sugar to taste. Add ice if you like.
-Quesadilla: between 2 tortillas: cheddar, green onions, sliced tomatoes, sliced avos, cilantro leaves, season with cumin. Serve with sour cream and salsa.
-Omlette: fill an omlette with ham, cheddar, avos and salsa.
-Salad: grilled salmon, cubed avo, red onion, cilantro, lemon juice, tomato. Serve over greens.
-Appetizer: Tomato paste, avo slices and goat cheese on toast. I use anchovies too sometimes but thats weird to most people… but I like it!
-Sammie: Avo, cream cheese, smoked samon.

I hope you like some of these! I love avos and I really do make all this quite often. Feel free to edit any of these things as these are only rough guidelines and ideas!!!

Good luck with the avocado experiment! Oh, and tell them that avos are good for your cholesterol and skin! They lower the bad fat and raise the good fat in your cholesterol count.

In most people’s quest to lose belly fat it usually starts will lots of crunches, then maybe some reverse crunches and possibly even more crunches to really feel that “burn”. It doesn’t matter how many crunches you do if you are still eating cheeseburgers, fries, pizza and other types of junk food. What you eat is so important in the quest to slim down.

What foods should you eat in order to lose weight? With all the fad diets, weight loss pills that magically melt away the pounds while you sit in your favorite recliner and other nonsense it can be very confusing as to what proper nutrition is.

Let’s clear through the clutter and give you a starting point to healthy eating.

·       Fruits and Vegetables: Rich in vitamins, antioxidants and fiber, they make the perfect snack. So instead of reaching for those Doritos to snack on, grab a handful of grapes or an apple.

·       Protein: As the building block of your muscles, protein is an important part of your diet. When choosing what proteins to eat, look for lean proteins like chicken breasts, tuna fish, turkey or egg whites.

·       Water: Staying hydrated is very important to your weight loss goals. It should be an important part of your daily routine anyway; most people don’t know just how much water they lose throughout the day. The usual guideline is to drink eight glasses of water throughout the day, although you may want to drink more if your exercise intensely.

When omelet has browned around the edges and the top has lost most of its moisture, add half of the vegetable mix, to one side only of the omelet. (Much like cutting a circle in 2.) Add half the feta cheese. Gently fold omelet over to cover the cheese and vegetables, creating a half circle.

Cover the pan and cook for about another minute. Turn off heat and allow omelet to sit a little longer until warmed through. Then gently slide onto plate.

Repeat above instructions with remaining ingredients. Can be served with Turkish bread drizzled with extra virgin olive oil, or a high grain crusty bread. (Remember traditional Mediterranean recipes would not be using butter on the toast or bread.)

Conclusion.

These easy Mediterranean recipes use Mediterranean foods that are easily available in most parts of the world. The fresh vegetables and herbs are typical ingredients for Mediterranean food recipes and will allow you a certain leeway in substituting your own favorites.

Don’t forget, that one of the reasons that the Mediterranean diet is so healthy is that Mediterranean recipes use extra virgin olive oil. This is the olive oil made from the first pressing of the olives and contains far more health bestowing anti-oxidants than the following pressings which result in virgin olive oil and olive oil.

Hope you enjoy these breakfast meal ideas for the Mediterranean Diet. We think you will agree it is the tastiest diet around!

Ingredients:

1/4 cup honey
2 tablespoons lime juice
2 tablespoons chili powder
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 1/2 pounds chicken wings — shoulder
midsection only — cut apart
1 carton (6 oz) frozen — avocado dip, thawed;
1 cup homemade guacamole

Method:

In a large plastic bag, mix honey, lime juice, chili powder, and soy
sauce. Add wings; seal bag and mix to coat. Chill, turning occasionally,
at least 1 hour or up to a day. Lift out wings and place in a single layer
on racks in 2 broiler pans, each about 10 by 15 inches. Bake in a 450
degree oven 15 minutes.

Turn pieces over and continue baking until browned, 25 to 30 minutes. (If making ahead, let cool, wrap airtight, and chill up to 1 day; serve at room temperature or reheat in a single layer in pans in a 350 degree oven for about 10 minutes.) Put wings on a platter. Place avocado dip in a bowl set on platter with the wings.

This recipe makes 8 to 10 appetizer sized servings.

Hygiene Tips:

From the point of view of food safety, you’re taking a risk if you leave it outside the refrigerator for more than two hours. Unfortunately, bacteria  grow and multiply at temperatures between 40 degrees and 140 degrees, and they flourish at room temperature.

To avoid food borne illness, all foods of animal origin should be kept  either hotter than 140 degrees or colder than 40 degrees.  If you know you won’t be returning home directly after shopping, bring along an insulated bag or box to keep cold foods cold until you can get them into the refrigerator.

Mexico offers a unique cuisine that is delicious and healthy. Ancestral home to the Mayan, Aztec and Zapotec civilizations, Mexico has a long history in cultivating food. Native staples included avocados, sweet potatoes, corn, beans, tomatoes, peppers, and a variety of squash. For meat, they hunted deer, turkey, quail, and rabbit. Chocolate is a native plant in this area, and was prepared as a beverage for the Aztec royalty.

When the Spanish arrived in Mexico, they brought their favorite foods with them. Pork, beef, cheese, and cream were added and combined with the native foods. The Spanish brought sheep, chickens, wheat, and sugar. Three hundred years later when Spain finally gave up control of Mexico, their influence on Mexican food was well established.

Corn is a major part of Mexican meals. Cornmeal, known as masa, is made into a dough that can be formed into tortillas, empanadas, or tamales. Corn is also added to soups, stews, and other dishes. Tortillas made of flour are more common in northern Mexico. Chili peppers are also a main part of the Mexican diet. Jalapenos, poblano, and Serrano chilies are just a few of the common choices in the Mexican household.

Beans are an important part of Mexican cuisine and it provides a lot of protein. Each region has their own favorite bean. For instance, pinto beans are favored in the north, while black beans are the bean of choice on the Yucatan. Beans are used in soups, as side dishes like frijoles, and as filling.

Beans are not the only food that is regional. In the hot, dry north, beef is eaten a lot because there is plenty of room for grazing. The Pacific coast offers excellent coffee and corn stew. On the Gulf coast, tropical fruits and vegetables are served with fish and seafood. The Spanish influence is very strong in Central Mexico, as this is where they settled. On the Yucatan Peninsula, seafood, eggs, black beans and corn are common food items.

If you want to try making a typical Mexican meal at home, there are many easy recipes to try out. Authentic Mexican rice recipes can set the tone for your entire meal. Rice is frequently used in Mexico as a side dish or as filling. Once you have tried a recipe or two at home, you will see how delicious authentic Mexican food can be.

Try something new and experiment. Adding a different bean can change the texture or flavor to a dish. Add tortillas or refried beans as a side dish, or throw together some fresh seafood and citrus juice to make a cooling ceviche on a hot day. Mexican food is great for kids to make, too. Let them make their own quesadillas or tacos.

You can also add Mexican cuisine to any meal. For breakfast, try mixed tropical fruit or scrambled eggs mixed with salsa. Top a tortilla with a fried egg and add some ham, tomatoes, chilies, and cheese. Add a side of refried beans and you will have a breakfast that will break up the normal routine.

Good (not weird) Guacamole Recipe?

Does anyone know a good but simple guacamole recipe? I just smash up some avocados, add some tomatoes, salt, grate some onions, add some chili powder, and add some hot sauce. I want absolutely no cilantro, or lime/lemon juice. Does anyone know anything not to weird that i could add to make it more interesting?

Heyyy :)
I’m not sure what you can add to the guac, but there are amazing recipes here on this website. Just click on the titles. Hope I could help! And enjoy!

EDIT: Just take out the lime and cilantro from some of the recipes and you’ll be OK. I’m not sure why you don’t want them, maybe you’re allergic of just don’t like those ingredients, but if I were you, I would at least leave the limes/lemons for the extra zang.

Salad Dressings

Salad is a mixture of hot and cold foods commonly made up of fruits and vegetables and then mixed with dressing such as crouton or nuts. Sometimes, whole grains, cheese, pasta, fish or meat are also added. It is usually served before or after the main meal as a dessert or appetizer.

This light meal has various types such as the caesar salad and green salad. The usual kind contains croutons and romaine lettuce dressed with black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, egg, olive oil and lemon juice as well as parmesan cheese.

Green salad is frequently composed of several vegetables such as lettuce, tomatoes and carrots. It is also known as the garden salad. Other usual vegetables in garden salads include radishes, celery, carrots and avocado, red onions as well as spring onions, onions, mushrooms, peppers and cucumbers. Other ingredients include black beans, artichoke hearts, hard boiled eggs and olive, pasta, tomatoes as well as green beans, sweet corn, rice and cooked potatoes.

The heart of palm, roasted red peppers, cheeses, croutons, fish or meat are also occasionally added to green salads. Michigan salad, Greek salad, Cobb salad, chef salad and Caesar salad are various types of garden salads.

Entrée salads may have either fried or grilled chicken fingers as well as seafood like fried or grilled shrimp placed on top of it. Fish steak, commonly tuna, salmon or mahi-mahi, can also be placed on top of the salad. Steaks like Sirloin can be sliced, grilled and placed over the entrée salad.

Salad dressings differ across cultures. Traditional salad dressings in Southern Europe are vinaigrettes; while in Russia and Eastern Europe, it is mayonnaise. In Denmark, salad dressings are based on the crème fraiche. Most of the light edible oil is typically used as salad dressing. This would include safflower oil, soybean oil, corn oil and olive oil.

Rinse, cut into florets (even cut up the stalks into 1/2″ thick pieces if you like, after peeling off the tough outside and add them in) toss in a couple of teaspoons e.v. olive oil, salt and pepper, roast in a preheated 400 degree oven for about 15-20 minutes (or until tender and dark brown-ish–caramelized).

If you want too, just with the cauliflower you can roast and toss with a little curry powder (1/2 tsp.) and salt and pepper and roast. When they’re about halfway done roasting, put some sliced blanched almonds in with the cauliflower. When finished roasting, toss just the cauliflower with a combination of a couple of tablespoons of whole milk plain yogurt combined with a handful of cilantro, rinsed and chopped and a squeeze of lime juice.

For the bell peppers (if they are not green), spray the outside with cooking spray or rub with a tiny amount of oil, place on a foil lined pan and roast in a 400 degree oven until nice and blackened on the outside and practically falling apart, maybe 20-30 minutes. Carefully crimp the foil around the peppers after they come out of the oven so they can steam for a few minutes, then unwrap carefully, scrape off the skin and seeds and you have roasted red peppers. You can put these on a grilled cheese sandwich (maybe with provolone or mozz) or just eat with some fresh mozzarella drizzled with balsamic vinegar, olive oil, salt and freshly cracked pepper. You can also slice and throw them in a greek salad or other salad.

With the yellow squash, rinse, slice (no thicker than 1/8″) and lay out flat on some paper towels and sprinkle lightly with salt, let sit for about 30 minutes then blot off extra moisture. In a large saute pan, heat 2-3 tsp. oil (any vegetable oil is fine) over medium high heat for a couple of minutes or until “shimmering”, then add dried squash and saute until nice and browned on the outside. They won’t need anything else, but if you want to add a little soy sauce at the end (or even chop up the green onions and saute them up first, remove from pan, saute squash, then re-add the onions). Taste it all before adding any soy sauce because the first salting will leave them nice and salty.

I love avocados and can eat them with a spoon, a little salt and a squeeze of lime or lemon juice. You can also make a salad with avocado, firm or extra firm tofu (cube it up) and make a dressing with some lemon juice (1/2 a lemon or lime), soy sauce (couple tablespoons), a little drop of sesame oil (less than 1/4 tsp), vegetable oil (about 2 tsp.) whisk those together and toss with the tofu and avocado. You can add a little fresh garlic if you want, or add the green onions to this too.

Happy eating!

Let’s start with some facts:

  1. Fruit and vegetables bring amazing health benefits
  2. We need to educate children about the benefits of eating fruit and vegetables
  3. Children need to adopt a healthier diet to avoid health and obesity problems in later life

All simple statements, but in practice it’s not so easy getting kids to eat more healthily which is exactly why it needs to be made fun and interesting.

Fruit is often considered by children as the boring alternative to crisps, chocolate and cakes. And sadly, despite the outstanding health benefits, maybe there is some truth there. Oranges, apples, plums and all the usual run-of-the-mill fruits, salads and vegetables that parents try to smuggle into the lunchbox could well be considered bland.

But apples and oranges are not the be all and end all of fruit. What about the more interesting, exotic fruits and vegetables that readily available on our supermarket shelves? Foods that not only taste delicious and can be incorporated into interesting dishes, but that also look and feel interesting too, stimulating the imagination and sparking natural inquisitiveness into where they came from.

There is a plethora of mouthwatering recipes involving exotic foods just waiting to be tried; keep them simple and your kids can help you with the preparation giving them hands-on experience as well as the opportunity to learn a range of new skills and boost their knowledge of worldwide cultures at the same time. For example, how delectable do these sound?

  • Avocado pear salad with cherry tomatoes, cucumber and crispy lettuce leaves
  • Pineapple fruit salad with ice cream, strawberries, citrus fruits and of course, pineapple!
  • Mango pancakes with strawberry jam
  • Green banana and carrot mash with vegetarian sausages
  • Sweet potato baked chips with a sour cream and chive dip
  • Butternut squash and blueberry treat
  • Plantain ice cream

Children will never fail to find these dishes fun to make, and they will suddenly realise that healthy foods can actually taste good too.

You could also enhance your educational efforts by including educational resources such as books and toys into the healthy eating curriculum. Take a look in your local bookstore, search online or if you are a school or nursery teacher, consult your resources supplier and you will soon come across specialist products that are designed to help younger children recognise and learn about worldwide, exotic foods and healthy eating.

Children are the future; so make sure their future is healthy and packed with the goodness of fruit and vegetables! Make learning about healthy eating fun by introducing children to the exciting world of exotic fruits and vegetables!
