It’s a green apple-sized fruit that turned dark as it ripened. the meat (the part you eat) was white and it had alot of seeds the size and shape of almonds. it tasted to me like yogurt with maybe an avocado-y after taste. it was good. any ideas what its called?

There is a certain amount of confusion surrounding this issue and hopefully this article will clarify and simplify the matter. The omegas, EFAs (essential fatty acids), are a vital component to a healthy diet and apart from Omega 9, our bodies cannot make them.  Together, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids play a crucial role in brain function as well as normal growth and development. EFAs belong to the class of fatty acids called polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). 

They are necessary for

  • Stimulating skin and hair growth
  • Maintaining bone health
  • Regulating metabolism
  • Maintaining reproductive capability

 

Health issues associated with a lack or imbalance are

  • reduced growth
  • dermatitis
  • infertility
  • lack of ability to fight infection and heal wounds
  • heart disease
  • cancer
  • asthma
  • arthritis
  • depression

 

It would seem, however, that it is not enough to just get as many as we can, but in the correct ratio.   Figures vary, but if you aim for a ratio of 2:1 in favour of Omega 3, you should be fine (estimates show that it is more like 1:20!).  So a good starting point would be to take a look at which foods contain which EFAs:-  

Omega 3

 

  • Oily fish – salmon, mackerel, trout, herring, sardines, pilchards, kippers, fresh tuna, anchovies, swordfish, carp, sprats.
  • Plant sources – flaxseed, canola oil

 

Omega 6

 

  • Oils: Sunflower, safflower, avocado, sesame, palm, apricot 
  • Foods: Peanuts, almonds, pistachio, brazil nuts 

 

I could go on adding to the list, but I think this demonstrates a trend, being, increase your intake of oily fish and decrease your intake of food cooked in oils high in Omega 6.  Even olive oil is mostly Omega 6, although there is a trace of Omega 3, but nowhere near the 2:1 ratio we are looking for.  Walnuts fair better than most nuts and you still need them in your diet, but in small quantities.  Butter contains both Omegas, though not in very great quantity.  Try to prepare your own food and if you do have a pre-packed meal or takeaway, take a moment to think about how it was cooked and the content.

Omega 9

 

This can be made by the body if the other two are present, so not necessarily an EFA.  The ratio of all three then is 2:1:1, again in favour of Omega 3.  You can find Omega 9 in avocados, olive oil and most nuts.

i have very dry skin and i want to know some recipes for homemade face masks that can make my skin soft and smooth thanks!

This is my absolute favorite mask: grind up a tablespoon of almonds and a tablespoon of oatmeal in the blender. Put in a bowl, add a tablespoon of honey, and a tablespoon of olive oil (the oil is optional). This moisturizes and exfoiliates!

I had dry skin for the first time this winter. What really helped me is Burt’s Bees orange facial wash. It’s kind of greasy, but works great in the evening. Then I used some of their moisturizer both evening and morning, and my dry skin was pretty good after three days. I’m still using this routine, and it’s working pretty well.

If you can’t plunk down for store-bought moisturizer, olive oil can make a great moisturizer. Just apply a few drops, and you’ll glow! And you just can’t beat honey — but I’d use that in the evening, not the morning.

You practically need a chemistry degree to read the ingredients on creams for getting rid of dry skin. There are many effective natural topical creams for dry skin, but the majority of products contain ingredients that do more harm than good. If you don’t recognize an ingredient, look it up.

Before you buy creams for getting rid of dry skin, do a little research, especially if the problem has been with you for a while. I found that one of the “medicated” lotions, supposedly good for eczema and dryness contains a chemical used in silly putty.

Apparently it is widely used in moisturizing lotions to “seal in” moisture. If you don’t like the idea of applying silly putty to your face, you can try something different.

Natural topical creams for dry skin contain things like palm and grape seed oil. Either of these will form a protective barrier that keeps in moisture and keeps out dirt and grime, without clogging the pores.

The other active ingredient in the medicated lotion that I looked at was menthol. That ingredient is also found in some natural topical creams for dry skin, because it temporarily relieves itching.

The only problem is that this is at best a temporary fix. What you are really looking for is something that will provide long term relief by improving the skin’s health.

Once again, you should try palm oil. The best creams for getting rid of dry skin contain a specific type of palm oil known as Babassu. It has proven benefits for eczema, itching, dryness and inflammation.

The most common ingredient, used by companies like Unilever and Gold Bond, is petrolatum. Dermatologists advise against the regular use of petrolatum, because it inhibits the skin’s natural rejuvenation process.

It does not penetrate, so it is not an effective moisturizer. It can lock in moisture, but we already talked about the best ways to do that. If you really want an effective moisturizer, you should look for natural topical creams for dry skin that contain Avocado or Macadamia Oil.

For most people, it’s enough to use them once or twice a month. But if you have a real problem with dryness, you can use them more often. Unlike petrolatum, both of these will penetrate, because they are so similar to the skin’s own sebum.

The best creams for getting rid of dry skin contain both avocado and macadamia, along with honey, protein peptides, Coenzyme Q10, vitamin E and an extract from sugar beets. Some of these ingredients may sound like old fashioned herbal remedies, but in many cases, the older remedies were better.

It sounds like you may have a latex allergy. There’s a protein in some fruits and veggies that are similar to proteins in latex, so there’s a cross-reaction happening.

Spring has sprung and I’m having a blast trying out new salad recipes. Here’s my favorite thus far.

In a bowl, combine:
2 cups leafy greens (I like a mix of baby spinach and tart, tangy greans like endive and mustard leaves, but you can use romaine)
1 handful crumbled walnuts or pecans (no need to spend time chopping. Literally, just grab a handful and crunch the nuts between your fingers.)
1 handful cheese (I like a mild, sweet, crumbly cheese like Mexican Queso Cotija or Asadero, but, again, you can use whatever you like)
1/2 pear, finely chopped
1/2 apple, finely chopped
1/2 avocado, in chunks
Drizzle lime, cracked pepper and 1/2 tsp of honey over the salad. Enjoy!

my aunt has the cutest ideas and i love to visit her because her cooking is so good and fun lol

what she does in her salads to give it a little extra, is..
before she throws in those pecans, she coats them with some sugar in a pan. this gives it a little crunch and sweetness. yumm lol

i also like to throw some grapes in my salads and sometimes grated carrots, or cheese if youre not vegan like me

What does a Healthy Diet consist of? In my eyes, I see a health conscious person, who eats fresh, organic if possible, who has switched to olive oil or grape seed oil, who focuses on veggies, who takes their time to eat, and who is willing to feed their soul.

Healthy Diet is about meeting your nutrient needs and your emotional ones. It is about nourishing your whole being. – mind body and spirit.

Healthy Diet is about taking in the amount of calories you expel, remaining the same weight. Fad dieting is not what healthy diet is about. Healthy Diet consists of eating a good healthy breakfast. i.e. cereal with nuts, fruit on a bed of healthful pro biotic yogurt; add milk. This breakfast has all the nutrients one needs to get a good start for the day.

Healthy snacking is good – a dark healthy plum, or nectarine is perfect.

Lunch could consist of a healthy salad, full of greens, avocado, seeds, and perhaps some asiago thinly sliced cheese on top or Greek feta cheese in sprinkles. Perhaps a sparkler or a herbal tea.

Healthy snack for a healthy diet in the afternoon how about an apple?

Dinner does not have to be heavy, so how about Chicken with Tandori Butter which is a recipe that has every healthy nutrient in it.

An evening snack you say? Not too late – but a piece of dark chocolate 80% to 90% chocolate and a half an apple or pear with it.

The goal of a healthy diet is not only to feel good on the outside, but to feel good inside as well.

Drink approximately 8 cups of water extra daily to keep your system cleansed.

Get your 8 hours of sleep uninterrupted nightly.

Above all, get exercise, and meditate. This is my concept of a healthy diet.

Try Herbal facial sauna once a week. Use chamomile, lavender, and peppermint herbs. Simmer 2 – 4 tsp of dried or fresh herbs in 2 quarts of water. After few minutes of steaming, place the pot at comfortable distance from your face on a table. Bend over the pot with towel covering your face and the pot to trap the steam. After 15 minutes, splash cold water and air dry your skin followed by application of moisturizer or facial oil. You can cool the herbal water and use it as toning lotion to be dabbed on your face after cleansing.

Green Tea Toner – teaspoon powdered green tea and 1/2 cup witch hazel Mix green tea with witch hazel until thoroughly mixed. Apply toner mixture with cotton pad to face. Do not rinse.

Grapefruit and Citrus Mask for Oily Skin -½ grapefruit, ½ lemon juice, ½ cored apple, 1-2 egg whites, 30 to 40 seedless grapes. Take the ingredients together in a blender and mix. Apply evenly on face and neck and leave for twenty minutes. Thoroughly rinse off with lukewarm water. Grapefruit cleans the pores while lemon juice acts as an astringent. The egg whites tighten the facial skin. This face pack clarifies the face and controls extra oil. Use this pack at least once a week.

Almonds mayonnaise scrub – 1/4 C. almonds, 1/8 tsp. mayonnaise. Grind almonds in blender until they form fine almond meal. Whirl in mayonnaise. Gentle rub scrub onto your face, and leave in place 10 minutes. Rinse. Use a toner thereafter. Shelf Life: Refrigerate for 2-3 weeks.

Hair Shine – Stir 1 teaspoon honey into 4 cups (1 quart) warm water. Blondes may wish to add a squeeze of lemon. After shampooing, pour mixture through hair. Do not rinse out. Dry as normal.

Sun Salvation – juice from 1/2 lime (or lemon), 1 TB honey (optional) and 1/4 C olive oil. Shake ingredients together in small container, store in fridge, should last a few days. Apply to face and neck, leave on, blot off later. Orange juice can also be used. Make sure to wear sunscreen if you’re in the sun after using citrus acid on skin, because it makes skin photo sensitive.

Fruity Lip Gloss – 1 Table spoon solid shortening , 1 Table spoon fruit-flavored powdered drink mix , 35 mm film container. Mix shortening & drink mix together in a microwave safe bowl till smooth! Place in microwave on high for 30 seconds until mix becomes a liquid! Pour into clean film container, or any other small airtight container! Place mix into fridge for 20-30 minutes or till firm!

What does a Healthy Diet consist of? In my eyes, I see a health conscious person, who eats fresh, organic if possible, who has switched to olive oil or grape seed oil, who focuses on veggies, who takes their time to eat, and who is willing to feed their soul.

Healthy Diet is about meeting your nutrient needs and your emotional ones. It is about nourishing your whole being. – mind body and spirit.

Healthy Diet is about taking in the amount of calories you expel, remaining the same weight. Fad dieting is not what healthy diet is about. Healthy Diet consists of eating a good healthy breakfast. i.e. cereal with nuts, fruit on a bed of healthful pro biotic yogurt; add milk. This breakfast has all the nutrients one needs to get a good start for the day.

Healthy snacking is good – a dark healthy plum, or nectarine is perfect.

Lunch could consist of a healthy salad, full of greens, avocado, seeds, and perhaps some asiago thinly sliced cheese on top or Greek feta cheese in sprinkles. Perhaps a sparkler or a herbal tea.

Healthy snack for a healthy diet in the afternoon how about an apple?

Dinner does not have to be heavy, so how about Chicken with Tandori Butter which is a recipe that has every healthy nutrient in it.

An evening snack you say? Not too late – but a piece of dark chocolate 80% to 90% chocolate and a half an apple or pear with it.

The goal of a healthy diet is not only to feel good on the outside, but to feel good inside as well.

Drink approximately 8 cups of water extra daily to keep your system cleansed.

Get your 8 hours of sleep uninterrupted nightly.

Above all, get exercise, and meditate. This is my concept of a healthy diet.
