My niece is coming to stay and we have a whole heap of avocados that we need to eat. Can we mush some up for her dinner? She's 9 months old. She likes mashed banana but her mum wasn't sure whether she could have avocado or not.

Avocado Mask for Oily Skin
1 avocado, mash
1 egg white
1 tsp. lemon juice
Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until you get a mixture. Apply to a clean face with fingertips on the oiliest part of the face (T-zone). Let dry for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water then cool water, follow with toner and moisturizer.

Avocado's can be hard to find and/or a little pricey if living in a northern climate, so here are some recipes that use avocado oil instead.

Dry Skin Cleansing Cream
1/2 oz. Beeswax
1 oz. Lanolin
2 oz. Almond Oil
1 oz. Avocado Oil
1 oz. Grapeseed Oil
2 drops Clary-Sage Essential Oil
2 drops Lemon Essential Oil
3 oz. Spring Water
Using a double boiler, melt beeswax, lanolin, and oils. Stir well. When melted, take off heat and add essential oils, then water. Wisk until cool.

Will this remedy make my hair grow?

Purchase a mild Shampoo (To Clarify hair, I will explain why)

Second: TRIM your hair ends (May 1 1/2 to 2 inches)

Third: Here's the magic part: Mix olive oil, almond oil, coconut oil, avocado oil and a "little" honey, (honey u will have to heat so it can blend). Either leave on ALL day or all night (if all Note, do not use honey)

Use a teaspoon of every oil and honey,.... a little more if ur hair is long or a little less if ur hair is short

Repeat this 3-4 times a week, your hair will grow like a weed, fortify, reconstruct, moisturize, soften & remove all frizz I promise,..... and it will be super shiny!!!!

(Will this still work even though I have rough hair (I'm black))

You could just take Vitamin E supplements. They will make your hair and nails grow faster. But I don't know about that. I don't think putting things on your hair will make them grow but I guess its worth a shot.

Essential oils in aromatherapy are highly concentrated and potent. Essential oils have adverse effect on skin if used undiluted. Though there are some essential oil exceptions that can be used directly on the skin. It is ideal to dilute essential oils with carrier oils.

Carrier oils are of a vegetable origin possessing highly therapeutic properties. Extracted from nuts and seeds by cold pressing as this process does not destroy the essential fatty acids & vitamins content.

Carrier oils provide much needed lubrication allowing hands to move freely over the skin, helping with the absorption of essential oils into the body. Carrier oils are light, non sticky and effectively penetrate the skin. They should be 100% pure, unrefined and cold pressed.

1 drop of essential oil = 1 tsp of carrier oil for 1% dilution. 2 drops essential oil to 1 tsp of carrier oil = 2% dilution and so on.

- Apricot Kernel Oil - light, easily absorbed and moisturizes both the body and face well. Contains vitamin E. Extracted from the kernel of apricot fruit, it is pale yellow in colour. When combined with calendula oil, it treats stretch marks, burns or scars. Cold pressed from the seeds of rose hips, it pale yellow light texture. Wonderful carrier oil for skin care.

- Sweet Almond Oil - Popular carrier oil in body massage. Lubricates and moisturizes the skin. Good for all skin types, especially eczema. Quickly absorbs into the skin, leaving your skin to feel soft and non greasy. Provides relief from itching, soreness, dryness, inflammation. Rich in proteins and vitamin D.

- Calendula Oil - infusion of marigold flowers, renowned for its soothing properties. Balances excessively oily skin, can be used alone or blended with almond or grape seed oil for body massage.

- Evening primrose oil - Perfect skincare oil for moisturizing, softening and soothing to dry and irritated skin.

Unrefined avocado oil is considered to be one of the most healthful vegetable oils one can consume. It is a multi-purpose oil that can be used for culinary purposes (it is exceptionally high in Vitamin E  as well as monounsaturated fats), suitable for dressings and sauces as well as frying, due to its high smoke point of over 490 degrees. Organic avocado oil is also an excellent “carrier” oil for other flavors; avocado carrier oil is ideal for infusion with various herbs. Historical Background

Bulk avocado oil comes from the fruit of the same name. The scientific name of the tree from which we obtain organic avocado oil is Persea Americana. It is native to the Caribbean coast of Mexico, and was apparently known to pre-Incan peoples of present-day Peru. The word avocado itself is derived from a word in the Nahuatl language, ahuacatl, which literally means “testicle.” This is most likely a reference to the shape of the fruit; among the Aztecs, avocados were believed to confer fertility and have aphrodisiac properties.

Europeans could not have known of the benefits of organic avocado oil much before 1500; the first written descriptions of the fruit dates from a Spanish geography text written about 1520, and the first English accounts were not published until over 180 years later.

Although not initially raised to obtain bulk avocado oil, the plant itself was first exported abroad in 1750, when the first avocado trees were planted in Indonesia. It arrived in Brazil about fifty years later; by the 1890s, avocado groves had been established in Rhodesia (present-day Kenya) and Australia. It was introduced in Lebanon and Palestine (present-day Israel) in 1908.

Today the plants that are the source of healthful organic avocado oil are grown primarily in Mexico. California, Australia, New Zealand and Kenya.

What Is an Avocado?

Although it grows on a tree and has a pit, it is actually considered a berry; that is, the source of bulk avocado oil is a fruit produced from a single ovary which ripens into a fleshy, edible pulp surrounded by a skin. Seeds are embedded within this pulp.

Botanically, the avocado is a member of the laurel family, along with the bay tree and cinnamon. There are over a dozen types of avocados grown today; however, the most common varieties are the hass avocado, which is a black-colored fruit with a pebbled skin texture and a bulk avocado oil content of approximately 19%, and the pinkerton, which has a smooth green skin.

Unlike most types of vegetable oils which are derived from seeds, organic avocado oil is extracted from the fleshy pulp of the fruit.

More About Avocado Oil

As mentioned earlier, avocado carrier oil is fine for creating different flavored oils. Although fine for humans and other primates, organic avocado oil contains a fatty acid known as persin, which can be highly toxic to domestic animals, particularly dogs, cats and horses.

Although avocados are a perennial crop in those regions in which they are grown (they can survive temperatures down to 26 degrees Fahrenheit), organic avocado oil can be expensive as relatively little of the crop is actually pressed for oil. It does however compare quite well to olive oil for taste and body; true gourmands consider the extra cost for organic avocado oil well worth it.

You need a wide range of fats and oils to live and stay healthy. It is all a question of which fat to choose and use. Good fats in proper balance play an essential role in keeping your health. 2 tablespoons of avocado
2 tablespoons honey
1 egg yolk
Mash the avocado, add the honey and egg. Mix until thoroughly blended. Apply to face avoiding the eye area. Let set 10 minutes then rise with warm water then cool water. Follow with toner and moisturizer.

1 avocado, mash
1 egg white
1 tsp. lemon juice
Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until you get a mixture. Apply to a clean face with fingertips on the oiliest part of the face (T-zone). Let dry for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water then cool water, follow with toner and moisturizer.

Avocado's can be hard to find and/or a little pricey if living in a northern climate, so here are some recipes that use avocado oil instead.

Protein
All dog breeds require a significant quantity of protein in their diet, whether from a concentrated meat source or some other vegetable protein source. This is the first and foremost ingredient in a dog's diet. Examples of good protein sources would be chicken, beef, lamb (including organ meat) as well as fish, eggs and cheese.

Essential fatty Acids
The second most important requirement is fatty acids. Of these, Linoleic Acid (Omega 6) is the most important as it is the only one that dogs can't make themselves. Examples of good Omega 6 sources would be vegetables, vegetable oils, grains and fruits.

Calcium
Calcium is another important requirement for dogs. They actually need significantly more than their human companions. Examples of good sources of calcium for dogs would be animal bones which they can chew and calcium supplements obtained from vegetable sources. The disadvantages of calcium from bones are that they may contain disease ("mad cow" disease), have a high amount of phosphorous and contain toxic elements like arsenic, lead, mercury, & radioactive strontium.

Foods to Avoid

Onions and garlic - the thiosulfates in these foods are actually very toxic to animals and can potentially cause the red blood cells to burst resulting in haemolytic anaemia.

Chocolate and cocoa products - chocolate contains theobromine which can be poisonous to dogs when eaten in large quantities.

Raisins and grapes - large quantities of these can cause liver failure.

Macadamia nuts - small quantities can cause temporary paralysis.

Avocados- the plant and the fruit are toxic to dogs.

Raw meat - the book is out on this one as many people advocate giving raw meat to their dogs. However, there is a chance that your dog (and you) will get sick from food-born parasites. Remember, if you do feed your dog raw meat, to practice safe food handling procedures. Also practice safe handling of your dog's waste as, although salmonella rarely affects dogs, they can pass it in their feces.

Cooked poultry bones - these bones can splinter and kill your dog.

If you are thinking of changing your dog's diet to a home made one, you should consult with your dog's veterinarian, just like humans consult a physician for major changes in their diet. He/she is your best source of information on pet nutrition and can advise you on creating a balanced home diet. Dietary changes should be made gradually as rapid changes in diet can cause stomach upset or discourage your dog from eating. Just remember that to stay fit, healthy and active your dog needs a nutritious and well balanced diet.

Could I somehow biologically alter an Avocado tree so that it could survive much colder temperatures?

I live in Canada and the temperatures have gotten down to negative 19 degrees Celsius (which is rare, winters are usually about -10 to -5)

Could I some how genetically modify an avocado plant to survive here?

Most plants avoid cold temperatures by going dormant. You would have to identify the genes that impart the ability to go dormant and protect the plant against freezing temperatures. It would be faster, cheaper and easier to build a very large greenhouse to grow the avocado trees or just go to the local produce market and by all the avocados you can eat!

Name of a small avocado tree?

I own a tall and large avocado tree. The tree is about 20 to 25 feet tall. I want to know if there are any trees that do not grow as tall as the tree that I have. Any type of avocado tree that does not grow very tall that you would recomend? Any small tree that gives nice and tasty avocados?

All fruit bearing avacodo trees are quite large..if you are concerned about being able to pick them on such a large tree I use a light bulb tool that is on an extension pole that has a basket like apparatus on it to hold a light bulb and replace them in lights that are in high ceilings etcetera..not made for avacados but they work well for it ...Get the type that is the 3rd item down here with a basket type and not the suction cup type

It's important, however, that the vegan or vegetarian combine their vegetable intake with iron (pulses, tofu, nuts), calcium (legumes, cashews, almonds) and B12 (wheat germ, yeast extract, avocados). 1 egg yolk
Mash the avocado, add the honey and egg. Mix until thoroughly blended. Apply to face avoiding the eye area. Let set 10 minutes then rise with warm water then cool water. Follow with toner and moisturizer.

Avocado Mask for Oily Skin
1 avocado, mash
1 egg white
1 tsp. lemon juice
Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until you get a mixture. Apply to a clean face with fingertips on the oiliest part of the face (T-zone). Let dry for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water then cool water, follow with toner and moisturizer.

Avocado's can be hard to find and/or a little pricey if living in a northern climate, so here are some recipes that use avocado oil instead.

Dry Skin Cleansing Cream

Avocados ok to use on bleached hair??

ok - I have bleached hair, and recently was reading through some of my Tia's hair mask recipe's and found one that involves using Avocados{ Take a half of a overriped avocado and put it in the blender and thn take the pulp and apply to your hair evenly and leave on for a hour}
now my frend said i shuldnt use it as a hair mask 1) cuz 2marrow I'm getting my hair rebleached 2) cuz she sayz ithat the avocado has certain acids in it that would react to my hair and dye it???? I just want to kow if that's true and if the hair mask is safe to use???

k just to clarify somthing for girls out ther like " Suzanna" who apparently can't read very well - the avocados hair mask is jus wat it is- a mask which is washd off , and since. I'm using it " Indoors" I doubt that any bugs will eat it ;) pleez don answer if ur not gonna be serious :)

apply the hair masks 2-3 weeks after your hair is bleached, just to be on the safe side

Avocado oil is renowned for its healing, anti-bacterial, and anti-wrinkle properties. Technically a fruit, unrefined Avocado Oil is cold pressed from avocado pear and is deep green slightly brownish in colour, while refined Avocado oil is pale yellow.

The unrefined version of avocado oil with deep penetrating qualities has strong aroma and is rich in vitamin A, D, lecithin, potassium and chlorophyll. This moisturizing oil is beneficial for rash, eczema, mature, parched and aging skin. Refined avocado oil is preferred because it is odorless and is used during intensive facial treatment for mature skin.

Rich in vitamin A, B1, B2, panthothenic acid and essential fatty acids; hence its regenerative properties and restructuring powers keep the skin moisturized, and elastic.

The lecithin and phytosterols make it excellent oil for massage: easily absorbed and silky. The penetrative powers of this oil is much more than other oils, thus it is ideal massage oil for skin and body treatments. The avocado fruit holds similar qualities of avocado oil for skin nourishment. Vitamin E provides moisturizing properties for smooth silky skin. Vitamin E decreases harmful effects of solar radiation, reduces UV induced damage and decreases skin redness after sun exposure. The fruit when rubbed topically on dry and sun damaged skin moisturizes and soothes the affected area. The skin of avocado fruit when rubbed like a loofah exfoliates the dead skin.

For a natural sunscreen, pour some zinc oxide into a bottle half full of avocado oil and shake well. Apply on skin that is exposed to the sun.

Mix 10 drops of lavender essential oil to 1 oz of avocado oil. Massage this oil for a soothing back rub for 15 - 20 minutes.

For Avocado facial mask, mash 1 ripe avocado. For dry skin add 1 tsp of avocado oil. Mix well; apply the mask to face and throat area and chill out. Place a towel dipped in hot water over face firmly to remove the mask. Next splash your face with the toner mixed with a drop of avocado oil.

For dry and wrinkled skin, blend 4 drops of frankincense, 2 drops each of rose and neroli oils and 20 ml of avocado oil. This blend is good for rejuvenation, induces relaxation and sleep if used at bed time.
