Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common form of dementia which is an umbrella term for several symptoms related to a decline in thinking skills and progressive deterioration of brain performance. Common symptoms include a gradual loss of memory, problems with reasoning or judgment, disorientation, difficulty in learning, loss of language skills, etc. The cumulative effect of all these changes becomes distressing both to the individual and their families. July 3 – 9 has been national Alzheimer’s Awareness week. Dementia currently affects over 750,000 people in the UK. Approximately 18,000 people with dementia are under the age of 65. What many people don’t know is that it begins 20 years before symptoms are seen and can be prevented by having a proper diet.

Many scientific studies point to nutritional deficiencies. People with Alzheimer’s tend to have low levels of vitamin B12 and zinc in their bodies. The B vitamins are required in order to help homocystines in the body to convert to glutathione the body’s most important anti-oxidant and SAMe an intelligent nutrient. The development of the neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques in the brain that are characteristic of the disease have been associated with zinc deficiency. The best source of zinc is found in oysters.

Huperzine A

The drug called Huperzine A is actually a derivative of a Chinese tea brewed from a plant called club moss. In Chinese the plant is called Shen Jio Cao. For centuries traditional healers in China have claimed that drinking club moss tea would improve memory and failing mental capacity. For the last 10 years, researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai have been working to isolate the active components in the tea. The drug Huperzine A, is a direct result if this work. Huperzine A hasn’t yet been tested in this country; however, doctors in Shanghai informed me they have tested the drug on hundreds of patients. From what we could tell it seems to be quite effective at stopping the destruction of the brain cells, it alleviates many of the symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s by balancing abnormal brain chemistry.

Turmeric

Studies have found that Alzheimer’s affects just 1% of people over the age of 65 living in some Indian villages. Turmeric reduced the number of the amyloid plaques by a half in scientific studies. Scientists have identified curcumin, the active ingredient, as a chemical trigger that enhances enzyme activity, protecting the brain against the progression of neurodegenerative disease. Curcumin also appeared to reduce Alzheimer’s-related inflammation in the brain tissue.

Bio-Strath

The herbal supplement Bio-Strath has been found highly effective in the treatment of early AD symptoms such as memory loss and mental confusion. Recent clinical trials carried out in Germany showed that 59% of the AD patients involved saw significant improvement in their condition after three months of Bio-Strath supplementation (2 teaspoons of the syrup 3 times daily). In another 41% the progression of the disease was halted and in no cases did the condition worsen among the treated patients. In contrast, 31% of the patients in the placebo group had a significant worsening of their symptoms over the test period.

Vitamin E

The vitamin can slow the advancement of Alzheimers disease by as much as 25% according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. when we reach our 40s, most people begin to naturally produce fewer amounts of antioxidants, but larger amounts of free radicals. Therefore, it becomes progressively more difficult to get the amounts of vitamin E necessary to fight free radicals through diet alone. Good dietary sources of vitamin E include spinach, eggs, nuts and seeds, avocado, tomatoes, peaches, and blackberries. If you want to supplement it must be with real vitamins not synthetic chemicals. So buy all your vitamins from StarGate Nutrition Vitamins dot com.

The aromatherapy study, done by a team at the University of Newcastle in Newcastle upon Tyne, evaluated lemon balm essential oil. The researchers applied it daily via brief massage to 36 agitated nursing home residents and applied sunflower oil to another 36 residents who were the control group. During the four weeks of treatment, 35 percent of those in the lemon balm group showed improvement in agitation scores, compared to only 11 percent of the placebo group. A decline in the sense of smell occurs as much as two years before mental decline in people with Alzheimer’s.

The Holidays are just around the corner and you’re worrying about the family dinners, the office party and the get togethers with friends aren’t you? And you’re not worrying about what to feed them or take to the parties. You’re worried about how you are going to look and what you’re going to wear if you can’t get rid of those pesky pounds around the middle.

Are you thinking that if you could just lose a half inch in the waist and maybe another half inch in the thighs you’d look great and if you could shed a little more that wouldn’t be bad either?

It happens every year, or at least it does for me. It had always seemed that trying to knock off a few pounds led to so much stress that I actually gained weight as a result.

But that was before.

My first tip is do not do what I did for so many years and go on a fad diet or buy the silver bullet weight loss pill. They simply don’t work.

So how do you shave that extra weight in the next 4 to 5 weeks.

Well it’s no secret, its nutrition and exercise. Notice I said nutrition not diet. Our bodies are designed to run on a specific blend of fuels. If we ate the food that our bodies are designed to burn, there would be no overweight problem; or high blood pressure or gout or diabetes or a host of other ailments that can be treated with good nutrition.

But that’s not what we do is it?

We eat a ton of processed foods full of sodium and sugar. We are absolutely in love with commercial deep fat fryers and all the trans-fat that they pass along. But the good news is, if we can make a small dent in those bad habits we can make our metabolism more efficient at burning fat and building lean muscle. Maybe enough to get into that party dress without holding our breath.

Here are a few tips to get a fat burning machine going.

Stay away from processed grains be it bread or pasta or bagels or donuts. We eat a ton of this stuff and it inhibits the metabolic process.

Give up soda. At least give it up until the holidays. This is the most difficult thing for me to do. I do love my Dr. Pepper. Replace soda with real fruit drinks, ice tea or water. Soda, even diet soda, is a fat magnet.

Try to eat high quality protein. High quality protein will control blood sugar and speed up metabolism when you work out (yes there is some exercise involved in this). Sources for protein can include beef if it is grass fed. Bet you never heard that before. Just make sure it is grass fed and not corn fed and pumped full of chemicals.
Eat healthy fats. That’s right, there are such things. Include avocados and nuts in your diet. In fact here’s another tip. Thirty minutes before a meal eat a handful of raw, unsalted nuts. This gives you good fats, protein and dietary fiber. You will feel fuller when you sit down to your meal and it will be easier to control your portion size.

Are you getting the picture?

Low carbohydrates, good sources of protein, knock off the soda, eat good fats.

Now a very brief word about the exercise needed to lose those extra pounds.

Contrary to what you might believe, exercises that target the stomach and abdominal muscles are not the most efficient way to flatten your tummy. Even if you do develop those muscles, you will still have a layer of fat on top of them. Crunches and sit ups do not increase the metabolism as much as other, simpler exercises.

The secret is to work out the whole body or at least the core. Doing this increases metabolism and burns fat. The more muscles involved, the more fat burned.

Now if you’re in shape, you can go hard core with weight training and mountain climber thrusts. If you’re like me you may want to try something a little easier.

Any exercise that involves balance will work your entire core. I learned this from a golf fitness coach. Now I’m not saying this is going to turn you into a fat burning machine but you’ve got several weeks to give this a try.

In the golf exercise, you stand on one leg with the other leg bent at the knee and hold a club in each hand parallel to the ground. If you’re not a golfer use both hands and substitute the clubs with a broom. Then using your shoulders you turn as far left and then right as you can. You’ll feel your leg, chest, back and stomach making adjustments to keep your balance. Continue on one leg for thirty seconds then switch to the other leg and repeat.

This is truly a low impact resistance exercise that is really easy to do. I’m sure you already know this, but the longer you do this exercise the more effect. Heck you can even do it while you’re brushing your teeth. Inside a week, your posture if nothing else will be greatly improved.

Imagine for a moment that it’s a month from today and you slip that dress on and look like a million bucks. How great is that going to feel!
