Is it safe to trim an Avocado, Tree, I live in the south, Texas is my State, and it is still Hot in this area.

I have a lot of Avocado trees in all sizes, I guess i have a green thumb, so I started to plant them, and they keep Growing, but now, I do not know if it is safe to trim their Branches. Any advice out there to someone who knows about this vegetable Plant, Is greatly appreciated.

generally you only trim the lower branches of an avocado tree. They’re a very soft wood and as they age the lower limbs tend to droop. When they get close to the ground, so the leaves, wood or fruit will touch, cut the limb off completely. You can seal the cut with tar made for trees.

One good web site, easy to read, is better homes and garden (WWW.BHG.COM). Lots of information on avocado trees including fertilizers.

Green is currently a very popular color. Environmentalists are talking about a greener world; corporate companies are going green to save the earth’s resources. Scientists are talking about fueling the future with green gasoline, derived from plant sources. Health and nutrition experts have been talking green for a long time. A diet that is rich in green vegetables can help protect and support good health!

Vegetables like spinach, broccoli, avocado, green peppers, romaine lettuce, are good for your health. The greener the color, the more health value it has. Green vegetables have:

  • the least amount of calories
  • the lowest fat value
  • the highest protein content per calorie
  • high in dietary fiber

Most Americans like to dodge eating green vegetables. Surveys indicate that the average American eats less than 2 cups of green vegetables a week! The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that we eat at least one cup of raw green leafy vegetables a day.

Green Superfoods are great for health for diverse reasons:

Good for your diet. Green beans, cabbage, leafy green vegetables are low in calories. They are packed in nutritive value, and make your stomach feel full without filling your body with calories.

They add protein to your diet. Vegetable protein is said to be far superior to meat protein! Plant protein is much easier to digest and there is no cholesterol! Broccoli has the highest protein content – about 3 grams of protein a just half a cup. Spirulina and chlorella contains 65-70% which is higher than soy, wheat or any meat source.

They add fiber to your diet. The average American diet is lacking in fiber. Green vegetables like broccoli, spinach, swiss chard, mustard greens, green peas, kale and other dark green leafy vegetables add fiber to your diet. Fiber binds toxins to themselves, helping your body clear them through your digestive system without allowing them to enter your body. Fiber adds bulk for peristalsis and helps to prevent constipation. Fiber also helps to keep a healthy intestinal microflora—an environment where good bacteria proliferates and bad bacteria (pathogens) find it difficult to survive. Fiber is also useful in weight management.

They add essential phytochemicals to your diet. Phytochemicals are powerful antioxidants found in plant substances. Vegetables like spinach, zucchini, brussels sprouts, garden peas, Swiss chard, kale, collard greens, mustard greens and turnip greens contain high amounts of the phytochemicals beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin. Research shows that these powerful antioxidants can help your body protect itself from night blindness, macular degeneration.1

Antioxidants also play a role in neutralizing free radical activity. Free radical activity destabilizes the molecular activity in the body, leading to cell degeneration or cell mutation. This breakdown of cell structure at the basic level of health can eventually lead to tissue and organ damage, even cancer and other diseases. Antioxidants can nutritionally help to slow this process.

They contain high amounts of essential minerals. Green vegetables contain calcium, iron, potassium and magnesium.

Calcium is needed for bone building and also helps your muscles and nerves to function well. It helps in the clotting of blood. Vegetables rich in calcium are the outer leaves of cabbage, broccoli leaves, turnip greens, mustard greens, collards, and kale.

Iron is important for cellular reproduction. Every second about 50 million old cells in the body are replaced by new ones! And iron is needed in the reproduction of every new cell! Iron is also needed by the body for metabolism. Avocado, asparagus, and broccoli are rich in iron content.

Potassium and magnesium are connected to the regulating of normal blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

Green Vegetables contains essential vitamins you normally do not find in other vegetables. Folate (Vitamin B9) and Vitamin K are found in good amounts in green vegetables. Folate is necessary for DNA duplication and repair and also promotes heart health. Vitamin K is necessary for the clotting of blood.

Buffers the stomach. Green vegetables buffer the stomach. A normal American diet contains too much sugar, starch and fats which causes too much acidity. Proper digestion of nutrients cannot take place in a digestive environment which is too acidic. Green vegetables can help bring the pH level to normal.

Green Vegetables Provide Enzymes: Raw green vegetables contain enzymes that help to digest food. They support a healthy digestive system.

There are plenty of good reasons to eat green vegetables! Add them to your diet every day. If you’re one of those who run away from vegetables, try a green food supplement like Royal Greens Ultra. Your body needs to have the health benefits that come from green foods. Supplements consist of natural foods which include chlorella and spirulina, probiotics and other fruits and vegetables to support and protect immune health, heart health and digestive health.

I need information on how to take care of my avocado trees and to when they start to grow the fruit?

I used to have an avacado farm in Fallbrook, ca.
If you took good care of your plant Just kinda watering it
like a tree that you want to grow for the first 2 or three years.
The next thing to make sure you get plenty of avacadoes a little before easter ( now would be a pretty good time )
give your avacado trees the kind of fertalizer that your supposed to give roses to make them bloom.
The more flowers the more fruit.
You may hear storys of some trees just don’t give fruit listen to who your source is I gaurntee the person telling you that never had an avacado farm.
For best growing make sure you give a little extra water on very windy days, trees move allot of water on thows days.
Try not to drownd your plant.
Avacado trees are pretty easy to get if your neer an avacado farm I bet you wouldt have to offer much money for like 1 or two year old trees that end up growing under the canapee of the establesed trees.
If your avacadoes grow kinda scabbed with brown leathery spots you have thrips you need to buy lace wing bugs.
Lace wings also eat afids they are need thay look like tiney tinker bell bugs.
Any ways have fun.

Winter is just around the corner and the cold weather can play havoc on the skin. Every season we should evaluate our skin care routine. For instance, during the winter months the sebaceous (oil) glands produce less oil; thus for those with oily skin during the summer months they may find some relief from excess oil during the winter. However for those of us with combination skin or dry skin, the winter months dry out the skin even more.

Below are suggestions to help you combat dry skin in the winter time:

Hydrate the Face – both inside and outside. Winter is the perfect time for warm herbal teas loaded with antioxidants. Additionally, you should have a daytime moisturizer that still includes SPF and an emollient rich night time cream. Consider a lotion during the day and a cream at night time. Consider creams that contain shea butter, avocado oil, and olive oil for example. Avoid moisturizers that contain alcohol and synthetic preservatives, fragrances, and coloring, as these have a tendency to strip the skin of its natural oils and have a drying effect on the skin.

Cleansing – we all know that we should stay clear of harsh soaps on our face. We also know that we should avoid extremely hot showers, although they are so tempting when it’s zero degrees! Hot water strips the skin of its natural oils thus drying out the skin.

Cleansing for the body,  consider a body wash that is gentle and can enrich the skin such as aloe Vera. After your shower pat down with a lotion rich in moisture such as shea butter. If possible consider using fragrance- and dye-free laundry detergents and avoid fabric softeners. These chemicals embedded into our clothes can irritate dry skin.

Facial Cleansing – this is probably the most important part of your skin care routine. A good cleanser will thoroughly clean the skin and not strip away natural oils.

Facial Toning – this is a matter of preference. I have read and written several articles about the importance of toners, however there are some that say it is not needed. Personally, I love my homemade green tea and chamomile toner.

Body Exfoliate – A good exfoliate once a week will perk up skin and color by promoting circulation under the skin.

Facial Exfoliate – usually once a week. For an easy exfoliate, add a little cornmeal to your facial cleansing. You will notice a difference in the feel and look of your complexion.

Facial Masks – A facial mask can do so much to hydrate deep down into the lower layers of the skin. There are numerous types on the market.  Oatmeal, clay, avocado masks are so beneficial to the skin.

Lips – thin skinned and no oil producing glands in the lips. They take a beating during the winter. If you suffer from chapped lips all winter long consider a waxy lip balm to lock in moisture and protect before you got outdoors. Consider a lip balm that contain avocado, olive, or soybean, they soften and soothe, while vitamin A-rich shea butter promotes healing.

Hands and Feet – just like the face, if you do not wear gloves, the hands are exposed to the winter elements. They need moisture and protection to. Consider a day lotion with SPF and at night give them a treatment with some shea butter for example. The feet which never see the light of day during the winter months are still vulnerable to cracks and dry skin and prone to developing fungus. Consider a balm with peppermint or tea tree oil at night to fight fungus, and cover your feet with cotton socks. Additionally a weekly soak in Epsom salts does wonders to relieve foot ache, fungus and cleanse.

brown leaves avocado

brown leaves avocado

why are the leaves on my avocado tree yellow and brown?

approximately 20 years old

IF it is an evergreen it might have a disease if not then it is probably due to lack of water we have had a very dry year this year hope this helps

Constipation is usually associated with three things, the pain in bowel movement and the inability to have bowel movement after a long period of straining in the stool and the absence of bowel movement after several days, which is generally three days or more. However, there is really no clear definition on what would constitute a person suffering from constipation because bathroom patterns vary from one person to the next.

Foods that have special recognition as laxatives include almonds, apricots (dried), avocados, chicory, coconut, dandelion (yes get out in your garden and eat those dandelion leaves, so long as they have no chemicals on them!), dates, endive, figs, flaxseed, grapes, mango’s, olive, papayas, parsley, persimmons, pineapple, prunes, rhubarb, soybeans, turnips, walnuts, watercress.

Lactobacillus Acidophilus encourages more efficient digestion and maintains intestinal health which is central to the treatment of Constipation. Flaxseed and Psyllium are used in the treatment of Constipation as they are good sources of fiber that can promote regular bowel movements. Flaxseed also contains essential fatty acids which have anti-inflammatory properties. Vitamin c is required for formation of connective tissue and plays an important role in maintaining proper immune function. Vitamin C and Magnesium are believed to have gentle laxative properties – an important aspect of the treatment of Constipation.

Water is very important to keep the intestines working well. Drink a glass of water early in the morning. For better results, keep the water overnight in a copper vessel and drink it when you wake up in the morning.

The best and simplest medicine is to drink a glass of lemon juice in water with a pinch of salt in it. This will treat any kind of constipation that may be present.

Green and leafy vegetables especially spinach, french beans, tomatoes, lettuce onions, cabbage, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, celery, turnip, pumpkin, peas, beets, asparagus and carrots have immense nutritive value.

Grapes have proved very beneficial in overcoming constipation. The combination of the properties of the cellulose, sugar, and organic acid in grapes make them a laxative food. Their field of action is not limited to clearing the bowels only. They also tone up the stomach and intestines and relieve the most chronic constipation. One should take at least 350 gm of this fruit daily to achieve the desired results. When fresh grapes are not available, raisins, soaked in water, can be used. Raisins should be soaked for twenty-four to forty-eight hours. This will make them swell to the original size of the grapes. They should be eaten early in the morning, along with the water in which they have been soaked.

Intake of food should be regularized, and lot of vegetables and fruits should be included in our diet.

Mix 4 gm’s of Senna leaves, 3 gm’s of pulp of Amaltas, 5 gm’s of rose buds and 5 gm’s of harad. Now you may take this mixture with milk, at night. Don’t take it with water.

You may take sufficient amount of liquids – water, milk, and other liquids so as to reduce the dryness of the intestines, which will help in curing constipation fast.

can i grow an avocado tree inside my house and still bear fruit?

A website that sells avocado tree would be nice too also any tips i should know about growing a avocado tree inside thx

Most Avocado require two trees for pollination. I have seen dwarf varieties
Park seed. co. has them and says it is self pollinating.

From years of experience as a stylist of natural hair, I have discovered that natural hair thrives best and remains more moisturized and manageable when natural products are used on the tresses and scalp. Of course, you may be confused about where to start. There are so many companies claiming to be “natural” or placing key phrases like olive oil, jojoba, shea, aloe, honey, and tea tree on their bottles that it is hard to not be seduced by all the minutia. Well, have no fear, I have some simple tips and a great product that is all natural and proven to work wonders on ethnic natural hair.

When first going natural, my clients often complained about their hair texture, softness, and manageability. They often encountered frizziness, dryness, flyaways, and dullness. How can you combat this? Moisture. Moisture. Moisture, Moisturize the ends of your hair and scalp 2-3 times a days with light natural oils. Olive and jojoba oil are fabulous for thirsty ends and scalps. But, make sure you get the pure stuff. Only use cold pressed, extra virgin olive oil and cold pressed jojoba oil, as they contain the most nutrients.

Finding a high quality, detangling shampoo and conditioner can also be tough. What should you do? Only use natural shampoos. You can either make your own or purchase one. Often, natural hair stylists recommended washing natural hair with conditioners to avoid placing hair-drying sulfates on the hair. However, you have to worry about more than sulfates damaging or drying your hair when using traditional conditioners—parabens, silicones, alcohols, glycols, and phosphates also pack a powerful punch to natural hair. Your best bet is to purchase a completely all natural product, such as Beauty 4 Ashes GodHead® Silky Smooth ® for Ethnic Hair or Hair Organix ® Systems for Ethnic Hair. For the past year, I have used the Silky Smooth shampoo and conditioner on my natural clients’ hair and noticed tremendous results. Because the shampoo and conditioner contain natural oils such as shea, jojoba, wheat germ, coconut, and avocado, natural hair, even hair that is kinky or more coarse, is left separated and soft. It uncoils tight curls while still giving the hair body and texture. It also makes the hair hang slightly longer. This is a benefit, especially when I set my natural clients hair. Although Beauty 4 Ashes ® makes products specifically for salons, you can also find many of their products on their website, wwwdiscoverb4acom.

You may be thinking that all this information is fabulous, but how can I style my hair from home. There is hope. You can create nice, professional styles by simply parting your hair into 12 even sections and twisting each of those sections. Leave the twists in overnight and loose them in the morning. You will wake up to a nice, full, wavy head of hair. There are also many sites devoted to providing hair styles for natural heads. So, don’t be dismayed. Your life is not over. Your hair is still fabulous and now you can moisturize it, shampoo it, condition it, and style it, without using chemicals whatsoever.

the big avocado

the big avocado
the big avocado
Will my avocado tree ever bear fruit if I grew it from a pit of an avocado from the market?

After a slow start now the tree is 8 feet tall and growing well. It is about 2 years old. No blossoms have ever grown on this tree.
Can avocado trees up the street help pollinate my tree. Do I need to plant another avocado tree next to it for pollination? My backyard is not that big.

There is a chance that you can get flowers and fruit. Problem is, you may be surprised by the fruit that you get. Hybrids do not tend to reproduce offspring that has the same genetic makeup as the parent. They have a habit of reverting. A simple example would be; you planted a seed from a small seeded, bacon flavored avocado. The plant you grew would most likely produce avocados without the bacon flavor or with a large seed, just like one of the grandparents.

Also, many of the avocado trees are grafted to superior root stock. Some Avocados that produce great fruit do not have great roots (& visa versa), so they are grafted to rootstock that produces a great tree, by supplying more water & nutrients for the branches and fruit.

Most experts will discourage you from planting an avocado seed. I’ve heard many disheartening stories from people that have tried. I’ve also heard a few sucess stories. At worst, everyone agreed that they had a nice green tree. At best, they had a mess left on the ground from a tree that produced more avocados than they could keep up with.

Traditionally, a low-fat, high carbohydrate diet is recommended for the obese and type II diabetics. This low-fat approach is based on simple math. Fat has about twice as many calories per gram as carbohydrates and protein. Regardless of the lower calorie content, applying the theory has proven disastrous. It has secured America a seat in the worldwide Fat Ass Hall of Fame while giving birth to a diabetes epidemic. No surprise, math isn’t the best measure of a foods effect on the body. Biochemistry is – go figure.

In contrast to carbohydrates, eating fat (not trans fat, but naturally occurring fat) has proven to be the most important method for ensuring fat loss and warding off diabetes. This is courtesy of fats inability to spike the fat storing hormone insulin – and prevent us from feeding our pie hole excess calories. Thus, despite eating fat in the form of grass fed beef, seeds, nuts, avocados, coconut oil or fish, you won’t suffer from unsightly belly fat. This phenomenon has been proven many times.
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition recently showed that eating twice as much fat led to greater weight loss. Researchers compared two eating plans that were similar in caloric intake but vastly different in fat consumption. Obese individuals who consumed 61% fat energy for eight weeks lost 18 pounds; those consuming a mere 30% fat lost 14 pounds (they replaced the fat intake with 46% carbs). (1) Far more staggering than the differences in weight loss are the differences in biochemistry among the two groups.

Low fat, high carbohydrate eaters have the perfect biological environment for obesity and type II diabetes. Their blood levels of glucose, insulin and triglycerides skyrocket.(2) The Nurses’ Study by Harvard found that women who adhere to the Big Fat Scam and eat mostly carbohydrates increase their risk of diabetes 2.5 times! Men are not immune to the deadly carbohydrate effect.

Diabetics usually die early from heart disease, twice as often as those without diabetes. It is so damaging that it can erase 11-20 years from a persons lifespan. Currently, an estimated one in four American’s suffer from it. One in three born in the year 2000 will succumb to the Big Fat Scam and therefore suffer from diabetes according to The Journal of the American Medical Association. (3)

The best way to avoid being an honorary member of the Fat Ass Hall of Fame and the diabetes epidemic is to avoid the Big Fat Scam. Start eating more fat (avoid trans fats, of course, and give preference to fats with omega-3’s). Judge your food based on its effect on insulin (via glycemic load), count calories second. Stop futzing around with fad diets and self-proclaimed weight loss gurus who push wanton pill and supplement use as well as whole grains, fruit juice, sugary yogurt, candy bars disguised as health bars and most anything else served out of a box, package or window.

As for the avocado, just get a dozen avocados and put the seeds (point down) into appropriate sized containers of water. Grow your own tree.

Although we think of cats as carnivores, in fact many are fond of vegetables and other plant material. Although food preferences vary with individual cats, many will sample a plot of grass outdoors, the leaves of a potted houseplant indoors, or other common items like shoelaces.

Cats confuse their owners by ending grass-grazing with regurgitation or vomiting. The reason for this predictable behavior is unclear, but it has been suggested that our pets eat grass, at least sometimes, in order to stimulate vomiting. Relief from hairball indigestion may be one motive for plant eating in cats. However, not all plant-eating leads to getting “sick”, so it is a good idea to consult with your vet if the pattern continues.

Because of this tendency to seek and ingest vegetation, cats may naturally experiment with the taste of houseplants. Such behavior can be undesirable, at best, or dangerous when leaves or other plant parts are toxic.

To keep your cat safe, be sure all plants in your home are safe in case of ingestion, or place them out of reach. Hanging pots, for example, usually lose their appeal even to curious cats. Non-toxic, valued plants can be protected with a small amount of sprayed vinegar or black pepper solution on leaves.

As a gift to those cats that seem determined to eat plants, owners can offer treats of herbicide- and pesticide-free potted grass. Grass seeds or even parakeet seeds can be sprouted in seedling pots and offered occasionally, the empty pot then re-seeded for a new batch. In small amounts, grass can be a welcome treat for any house cat.

Listed here are plants poisonous to cats that must be avoided if there are cats in your home. While in some cases just parts of a plant bark, leaves, seeds, berries, roots, tubers, spouts, green shells might be poisonous, this list rules out the whole plant. If you must have any of them, keep them safely out of reach. Should your feline friend eat part of a poisonous plant, rush the cat to your veterinarian as soon as possible. If you can, take the plant with you for ease of identification.

Will an 9 foot tall Avocado tree grow outdoors in Texas?

I live in the humid subtropical climate of North Texas and we do have freezes starting in mid to late November. Will this kill an Avocado tree? I have seen fig trees survive but they were much larger than this tree, and have some wax on the leaves. Please advise.
okay this tree is 9 ft tall.

I did find out that it will not bloom for at least three years and I will need another tree to cross pollinate for fruit.

Yes, the growing will stop for avocados. But I don’t believe avocados can grow as big as 9 feet. That will be impossible. The largest it can grow is the one you see in markets.

Grilling Hamburgers The Old Fashioned Way

Grilling hamburgers, one of my earliest backyard grilling memories. Our Family would get together, usually on the weekends, and have a hamburger and ice cream supper as we say here in Texas. I can fondly remember sitting on top of the old ice cream freezer while my Dad, Uncles and Granddad took turns at spinning the old hand crank attached to the water soaked wooden ice bucket.

Today, the hoodless grill would resemble a throw away variety you would take to the beach, but then we were in tall cotton and in for some delicious eating. The ice cream would be flavored most of the time with a can of crushed pineapple. Or, just maybe, someone would have given us some fresh ripe peaches to mash and toss into the vanilla ice cream mixture.

Cooking out then was a real big treat for the entire family, always with a lot of laughter, running and playing.

Grilling the hamburgers soon became my responsibility, even though I was only about 10 years old at the time. Carefully building the charcoal fire in that old grill we had was a test of my better Boy Scout skills. Once the charcoal was covered in a fine white ash the grilling could begin.

The ice cream was being packed in more ice mixed with a generous amount of rock salt mixture to be allowed to season, while we all ate our terrific tasting hamburgers always topped with lettuce, red ripe tomatoes and onions. The catsup bottle would be passed around as everyone would take their turn, shaking or popping the bottom of the bottle to get the thick tomato sauce from the jar.

Ribs today are one of my favorite backyard treats, but the hamburgers still to this day come sliding across the plate for a delicious grilling feast.

Ah the ribs, good tender slab of ribs with the meat falling off the bone, slathered with a generous portion of smoky chipotle barbecue sauce. Just enough heat in the sauce to add a nice warm blanket right on top of your tongue. Did you know the chipotle is nothing more than the Jalapeno smoked and dried usually with mesquite wood? They are quite delicious giving a nice smoky flavor to your food.

Guacamole is also a favorite topping with just about any grilled meat, especially beef, pork or chicken. Creaming those fresh ripe avocados together with a nice garden ripe tomatoes, chopped green onions, try a little chopped chipotle as well. Season your delicious concoction with a squeeze of fresh lime juice, toss in some cilantro, salt and pepper and call it a meal by it self.

Thick juicy T-Bone steaks are a great treat as well as chicken fajitas. Fun to do because everyone gets to pile their own into a large flour tortilla made just to suit them.

Yes grilling today is just as much fun today as it was when I was growing up. The old three legged grill has long since been tossed onto the trash heap. Replaced with a big cast iron wood smoker and grill, sure I have a handy gas grill for almost daily use but nothing is better than firing up the old trusty smoker.

My great nieces and nephews are now the ones running and playing. They are always beaming with delight as the scoops of homemade fresh peach ice cream is served up with one of “Nana’s” homemade cookies.

Someday though I think I will pull out the old hand cranked ice cream freezer. After all, they are missing one of the best parts of the family cookout. Sitting on the old freezer, holding it down while their Dad, Uncle and Granddad take turns cranking the old beast.

I wonder if they would sit still that long?

The largest it can grow is the one you see in markets.

records say an average of 39F/3.9c in january for pakenham’s elevation. that means your avocado should do okay.

if your avocado is the west indian type/smooth light green skin, then maybe to besafe you should try to plant it in a protected position..but take a look at this text i got from an ag university:

Hardiness: USDA Zones 8-11 (you are zone 10). The Mexican avocado varieties are the most hardy, withstanding winter temperatures to 16 F (-9 C); some can be grown as far north as Charleston, South Carolina. West Indian avocados cannot tolerate temperatures much below freezing. Guatemalan types are intermediate, hardy to 24 F (-5 C) or so. ‘Mexicola’, “Gainesville’ and ‘Winter Mexican’ are among the hardiest varieties available. One of the tastiest varieties is ‘Pollack’, a West Indian type that is killed by temperatures below freezing.

Unrefined avocado oil is considered to be one of the most healthful vegetable oils one can consume. It is a multi-purpose oil that can be used for culinary purposes (it is exceptionally high in Vitamin E  as well as monounsaturated fats), suitable for dressings and sauces as well as frying, due to its high smoke point of over 490 degrees. Organic avocado oil is also an excellent “carrier” oil for other flavors; avocado carrier oil is ideal for infusion with various herbs. In addition to its suitability as a comestible, unrefined avocado oil is also excellent for use as a cosmetic and the repair of damaged skin.

Historical Background

Bulk avocado oil comes from the fruit of the same name. The scientific name of the tree from which we obtain organic avocado oil is Persea Americana. It is native to the Caribbean coast of Mexico, and was apparently known to pre-Incan peoples of present-day Peru. The word avocado itself is derived from a word in the Nahuatl language, ahuacatl, which literally means “testicle.” This is most likely a reference to the shape of the fruit; among the Aztecs, avocados were believed to confer fertility and have aphrodisiac properties.

Europeans could not have known of the benefits of organic avocado oil much before 1500; the first written descriptions of the fruit dates from a Spanish geography text written about 1520, and the first English accounts were not published until over 180 years later.

Although not initially raised to obtain bulk avocado oil, the plant itself was first exported abroad in 1750, when the first avocado trees were planted in Indonesia. It arrived in Brazil about fifty years later; by the 1890s, avocado groves had been established in Rhodesia (present-day Kenya) and Australia. It was introduced in Lebanon and Palestine (present-day Israel) in 1908.

Today the plants that are the source of healthful organic avocado oil are grown primarily in Mexico. California, Australia, New Zealand and Kenya.

What Is an Avocado?

Although it grows on a tree and has a pit, it is actually considered a berry; that is, the source of bulk avocado oil is a fruit produced from a single ovary which ripens into a fleshy, edible pulp surrounded by a skin. Seeds are embedded within this pulp.

Botanically, the avocado is a member of the laurel family, along with the bay tree and cinnamon. There are over a dozen types of avocados grown today; however, the most common varieties are the hass avocado, which is a black-colored fruit with a pebbled skin texture and a bulk avocado oil content of approximately 19%, and the pinkerton, which has a smooth green skin.

Unlike most types of vegetable oils which are derived from seeds, organic avocado oil is extracted from the fleshy pulp of the fruit.

More About Avocado Oil

As mentioned earlier, avocado carrier oil is fine for creating different flavored oils. Although fine for humans and other primates, organic avocado oil contains a fatty acid known as persin, which can be highly toxic to domestic animals, particularly dogs, cats and horses.

Although avocados are a perennial crop in those regions in which they are grown (they can survive temperatures down to 26 degrees Fahrenheit), organic avocado oil can be expensive as relatively little of the crop is actually pressed for oil. It does however compare quite well to olive oil for taste and body; true gourmands consider the extra cost for organic avocado oil well worth it.

I live in Minnesota. I have 2 avocado pits that I would love to grow. how do I start & then what do i do?

Please help. I have tried in the past by putting them half in water but the water basically rotted. I want an avocado plant so bad. As I said i live in Minneasota so this would be an indoor project. Any suggestions would help. Thanx Everyone.

Avocado is a tropical fruit, a tropical plant, we have here in South Florida a lot of them, in reality this plant grows very healthy in the Caribeean Islands, because the temperature is warm all year around, if you try to plant an avocado tree in Minnesota the first cold day will kill the plant, and that is not an indoor plant, is a very huge tree, sometimes reaches 60 feet..?

Planting a Avocado Tree?

I was born and raised in California, where it is easy to grow any kind of plant basically. I started an avocado seed, but had to move …. to Oklahoma. Do you think I can start and avocado seed here? I think Avocados are a tropical plant, and this climate is very not tropical.

I don,t know about Oklahoma but I grew an avocado tree out of a 25 gallon pot in north Georgia for 12 years. However it’s growth rate was somewhat diminished.

The Algemarin line of bath products contains Sea Algae, an increasingly popular additive in skin-care products. Sea Algae is considered to be the richest natural source of minerals, trace minerals and rare earth elements. Sea Algae contains some 77 elements found in sea water. Because of their natural source, these elements are readily absorbed through the skin. Negatively-charged ions help attract toxins and heavy metals, allowing them to be flushed out of the body. This can help protect against the pollutions we are exposed to in food, water and air.

Sea Algae is known for stimulating the circulation of blood and facilitating lymph flow. It aids in the transport of nutrients at the cellular level, increasing the benefits of the foods we eat and the supplements we may take. This adds up to an improved feeling of health and well-being.

Sea Algae directly improves skin elasticity. This can be especially helpful while on a weight-loss program, as it can help to minimize the skin sagging often associated with losing weight. Tighter, more resilient skin adds greatly to a more youthful appearance.

Skin hydration is also improved by the use of Sea Algae products on the skin. This is of great benefit in dry climates. Anyone who is subject to the drying influence of sun, wind and air pollution will appreciate the hydrating effects of this product. That tight feeling will melt away, making you look and feel younger and more attractive.

The ingredients that make up the Algemarin products include: Wheat Germ: Improves the regeneration of the skin.

Jojoba Oil (Buxus chinensis): Protects the skin’s moisture balance and is especially beneficial for dry skin.

Allantoin: A plant agent that speeds up the skin’s healing process and gives the skin a soft, smooth and healthy appearance.

Polypeptides and amino acids: Stimulates the replacement of skin cells and maintains the natural moisture balance of the skin.

Acacia Collagen: Covers the skin with a moisturizing film and helps prevent the skin from drying.

Avocado Oil (Persea gratissima):. Improves the elasticity of the skin.

Shea butter: Derived from the nuts of the Shea tree. Helps the skin retain its moisture.

Marine algae extract (brown algae), trace elements: Includes mineral salts with trace elements which help counteract the skin’s aging process with their protective and moisturizing properties.

Hyaluronic acid: Helps the skin retain moisture.

Panthenol: Has an excellent moisturizing effect and helps promote skin regeneration.

Vitamin A and Vitamin E: Increases the moisture-retention ability of the skin and stimulates cell regeneration.

Algemarin is formulated in Germany. Incorporating the benefits of Sea Algae, these foaming bath products and shower gels give your bathing experience the glow of luxurious regeneration. All are ph-balanced and tested by dermatologists. The Sea Blue foaming bath products turn your bath water a lovely dark blue. You’ll feel nourished and nurtured by the sea as you soak your cares away. The clear shower gel comes in a variety of delightful scents sure to please the whole family.

the avocado pit

the avocado pit
the avocado pit
how to start an avocado plant from a pit?

Open the avocado and remove the pit from the center. You can eat the fruit of the avocado, it’s yummy and is full of nutrients!*

Wash the avocado pit under cool running water, you don’t need soap to clean it. With your fingers gently wipe away and remove any of the green fruit that might be on the pit. Rinse it well and then blot it dry with a paper towel.

Carefully push three toothpicks into the thickest width of avocado, you want to push the toothpicks into the pit about a 1/2″ deep. (It’s okay if you push them in deeper or even a little less) The toothpicks will help suspend the avocado pit in water and keep the top part of the pit in fresh air and the fat base of the pit under the surface of the water. Be careful pushing in the toothpicks, they have pointy edges and could hurt if they poke your hands, it’s all right to ask a grown-up to help with this.

Suspend the pit over a glass filled with water….the toothpicks will rest on the rim of the glass and hold the pit in place so it doesn’t sink to the bottom. Always check the water level in the glass and see that the water is covering the fat base of the pit by about an inch depth. If the water is below that level you’ll need to add some more. Slowly and carefully pour in more water from a small cup to avoid splashing.

Place the glass in a bright windowsill. In about three to six weeks the top of the avocado pit will begin to split and a stem sprout will emerge from the top and roots will begin to grow at the base.

When the stem grows to about five or six inches pinch out the top set of leaves. In another two or three weeks new leaves will sprout and their will be more roots.

It’s now time to plant the young avocado tree. Place enriched potting soil in a large flowerpot (maybe 8″ to 10″ across). Fill the soil to about an inch from the top of the pot. Make a small depression in the center of the soil and place the pit, root-side down into the depression. Don’t put it too deep…you want to have the upper half of the pit above the soil line. Add some more soil around the pit to fill in any air holes by the roots and then firm it into the soil by gently pushing the soil around the base of the pit. The tree’s stem and leaves should be straight and pointing up (like a flagpole).

Give the soil a drink to water the pit. Water it generously so that the soil is thoroughly moist. Water the soil slowly and gently so that when it’s poured in it doesn’t gouge out holes in the soil. Keep your tree watered but don’t let the soil be so moist that it ever looks like mud.

Has anyone successfully grown an avocado tree from the pit?

I have been trying to spourt an avocado pit, any suggestions or tricks to give me success?

Yes! I had several and one grew so tall that I had to support it with a wooden dowel! I simply peeled the papery stuff off of the seed, then gently pierced it with 4 toothpicks. I took a glass jar, and placed it in it, to where it was suspended from the toothpicks and added just enough water until the bottom was immersed by 1/2 inch or so. I placed it in a sunny window and it thrived!! Once the root system was evident, I potted it and placed it back in the same window. The leaves grew to an incredible length and it lived for years! I had to give it to my mother-in-law when we moved to Europe with the Army, and she left it outside and it froze. I truly believe that if she would have taken better care of it, it would still be alive. I hope my ‘technique’ works for you – God bless!

Psoriasis is a usual skin disease that comes as lesions with white scales on the skin and also leads to weakening of skins and joints. It is a chronic disease that is characterized by red, silvery, thick and scaled patches on the skin. It is a poorly understood condition that affects the skin and also at times the nails whose symptoms include red inflamed skins covered by white scales, which flakes easily.

Psoriasis can appear all over the body and can be really itchy and irritating. It mostly happens on the arms [specially elbows], legs [knees], buttocks and trunk and rarely affects the face and scalp. Sometimes you will find psoriasis affecting your fingernails and toenails with symptoms like ridges down the nails, yellowish spots, white color pits and thickness to the nail’s edge.

Causes of psoriasis

The first cause of psoriasis is dry skin. When you are getting psoriasis, you will find irritations on your skin and find it covered with bright silvery scales. Not only does the disease affect knees, skin behind the ears or scalp, but it also affects the underarms and genital areas. The lesions vary in size from being minute papules to sheets covering larger parts of the body. The lesions are always dry and rarely become infected.

Psoriasis is basically an abnormality in the skin mechanism where the skin grows and replaces itself. The abnormality is due to the metabolism of amino acids, which are nature’s basic building blocks for the reproduction of cell tissues. Heredity plays a major role in the development of psoriasis. The factors that aggravate and precipitate the outbreak of psoriasis are physical and emotional stress, use of certain unwanted medicines, infections and change in diet.

Remedies for psoriasis

Psoriasis is a metabolic disease so it is very useful that you should follow a regular diet devoid of all spicy and disorderly food. More of fruits, fresh vegetables, fruit juices, boiled bitter gourds, and curd, are very useful.

Food remedies

Researchers have recommended beta-carotene, omega-3, fatty acids, folate and zinc to be nutritional factors for reducing psoriasis. Soluble fiber such as pectin, guar gum, and psyllium are very useful for binding toxins. However, you should also eat things like flaxseed oils, folic acids [present in Brussels, spinach, bok choy, beets, chick peas, turkey, peas, oranges], omega-3 [present in salmon, trout, tuna, mackerel, sardines and herring.

Homeopathy remedies

There are some miraculous homeopathic medicines like arsenicum album, graphites, calcarea carbonica, mezereum, mercurius solubilis, sepia, staphysagria, sulphur and rhus toxicodendron that remedies psoriasis effectively within a very short time.

Other remedies

You can use essential oils like avocado oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, cashew nut oil, Vitmain E and buttermilk as homemade remedies to reduce psoriasis.

Provide remedies for psoriasis to enjoy a healthy skin.

Does avocado wood make good firewood?

Had an enormous, 30-foot high avocado tree taken down, and have lots of logs from it.
That’s usually true, Festertoo, lol. It will get cold enough this winter, though. Here in southern California it doesn’t get as cold as other places, but it usually drops to freezing at night in the winter. :)

Yes, it’s excellent. It’s a very hard wood, so it burns very hot and lasts a long time. With all the avocado groves around Southern California, avocado wood is a very popular firewood here.

Can I grow avocado in the container?

Dear everyone,
Please tell me can I grow avocado in the container and it can bear fruit?
I live in mobile home park and the space very limited, but I love to grow an avocado tree, I just bough one tree in 5 gallon container. Can I transfer it to a large container for to have fruit in the future? And how large of that container? Thanks so much for your reply.
Kiddo

Anything is worth trying… if it was grafted and grown for fruit from a nursery… you have a better chance than growing from seed… also the larger the container the better your chances of producing fruit in the future…i will attach a few good resources i have come across… good luck!!!

It is a lot of fun to try growing fruit indoors year round. This is a great hobby if you live in an area that receives severe winter weather that would not support the growth of certain warm-weather fruit, such as citrus trees. With indoor gardening, you can provide everything you fruit plants need to thrive and produce fresh fruit year round.

Dwarf fruit trees can successfully be grown indoors. Citrus such as lemon and lime, as well as fruits such as apple, avocado, nectarine, banana, fig, pomegranate and kiwi provide a lovely fruit. A self-pollinating tree is best, because otherwise you will need another tree of the same type to pollinate your desired tree in order for it to fruit. Happily, dwarf fruit trees produce regular-sized fruit, just not as much as on a standard-sized tree.

Lemon and lime dwarf trees in an indoor situation bloom throughout the year. They will produce three to four crops a year. They appreciate the warm temperatures that reign in your home. You will need much light for your citrus to be happy indoors.Grow lights and Grow lamps such as HID lights, which are used along with electronic ballasts or digital ballasts that control the flow of electrical current, produce light that is most similar to sunlight than other types of chrome dome light bulbs, and they are a great choice for indoor citrus.

There are other tropical trees that will bear fruit indoors. A Natal plum has white fragrant flowers that bear bright red fruit. Surinam cherry has white flowers that have fruit that starts green, moves to red and ends up dark purple. The stunning Barbados cherry starts with lavender or pink flowers that form bright-red berries. Dwarf pomegranate will get to three feet tall indoors, and can actually be used for bonsai because they are evergreen. The fruit is a bit smaller than what you might find at a supermarket, but the taste is wonderful.

Because we don’t have birds or bees indoors to pollinate our fruit, we have to help our plants along by transferring pollen from flower to flower by using a small paintbrush or a cotton swab. You will want to water your fruit plants thoroughly, and then let them dry out a little between the times you water. Any good-quality potting soil will work well, and you can apply an organic blooming houseplant food to give them the nutrition they need. Increase the indoor humidity by putting a tray with pebbles and water in the bottom near the plant, or running a humidifier in the room with the plants.

You will be happy for your indoor fruit when you pick a fresh lemon in the middle of winter.

What’s wrong with the leaves on my avocado tree (includes picture)?

The leaves look yellowish-green and have brown areas on them. Could it be because of the time of year (late Winter)? Or is it a sign of some type of mineral deficiency?

http://www.imagebam.com/image/2c30ce29468332

Btw, I live in Florida and the tree is about 20 years old.

Could be a couple dif. things. What I would do is pull off a couple of the leaves and put them in a baggy then take it to a garden center and ask them. They will know better cause they can see it up close and in person. Pic sort of blurry but it could be a fungus, or a pest.

Avocado: Introduced to the area in 1833, the South Florida climate is ideal for growing this nutritious fruit. There are over 56 different varieties with summer, fall and winter growing seasons. The thick skin is green, and can be smooth or rough textured, and teardrop, round or football shape, depending on the species. Avocados have more fat than most fruits, but they are an excellent source of potassium and Vitamin A, and are used in salads, guacamole, and taste great scooped right out of the shell.

Trees are 40-60 feet in height and produce large quantities of fruit that do not ripen until they are picked or fall to the ground.

Growing Conditions: Sunny location with well-drained soil. Season: January-June.

Caimito – Star Apple: This is an ornamental evergreen tree with sweet purple or green fruit and shiny green leaves with a brown underside. The fruit is sweet and gelatinous. The trees range from 25 to 100 ft in height.

Growing Conditions: Well-drained soil with no chance of flooding.. Season: Late May-March.

Carambola – Star Fruit: Plant produces a large fleshy berry, 2-6 inches in length, with a waxy, yellow skin. A cross-section slices produces a perfect star shape – hence the name. The trees are considered small to medium in height (35 feet max), with dark green leaves and flowers.

Star fruit is great served in salads or as an iced juice drink, canned, dried or preserved. Not advised for people with kidney disease due to high concentration of oxalic acid.

Growing Conditions: Sunny location with protection from the wind. Season: July-September, November-February.

Mango: Native to Asia and India, mango trees have been growing in Florida for at least 100 years. These medium to large trees (up to 100 feet) have a number of varieties and produce a hearty crop of tasty fruit. When first picked, mangoes are light green, but are best eaten when the fruit softens slightly and and skin takes on a yellow, red, or orange color. The fruit is a good source of vitamins A and C and tastes great in salads, breads, or pureed.

Growing Conditions: These trees are tough and easy to grow. Season: May-October.

Passion Fruit: This vine produces purple, yellow or reddish colored fruit surrounded by an sweet, orange pulp. The juice makes a wonderful punch.

Growing Conditions: Passion Fruit vines should be planted in an area where they can be supported by a fence or trellis in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Season: June-December.

Tamarind: This is a large tree (up to 80 feet), with rough bark, twisting branches and evergreen foliage. Flowers are a pale yellow with red veins that appear in early summer. Avocado Plant – leaves dying but new leaves continue to grow?

I have been growing an avocado plant from the stone for the past 6 months. The stem seems healthy and the plant keeps growing new leaves. However, as soon as the new leaves start to grow the old leaves turn brown, dry, and eventually fall off. This has left me with a very long, but stable, stem and 4 leaves at the top of it. Can anyone inform me as to why this has happened and if there is anything I can do?

Avocados like lots of humidity. Try misting it several times a day.
I have just the opposite problem, a 30ft. avocado tree in the yard next to mine dropping its crap in my pool. I wish it would die.

In this item I wanted to show you how to make one of my favourite meals to help build more muscle. Salads are seldom recommended to build muscle but just to be unique here is one for you. Most women I know eat salads often, but I think many men think that eating a salad will turn them a bit more girly. I expecthope to change that with my ultimate muscle growing salad.

Before you make this you should know this is not a light salad, its not low in calories, fat or carbs.

But this is the entire goal! This salad is not light on anything, it is however very heavy on loads of foods that are exellent for your developing body. You should give your body everything it needs to stay in hormone balance, manage at its best, satisfy your hungar, fuel your training sessions, and to prevent cravings, this salad helps do this.

When you give your body what it needs on a frequent basis, cravings should vanish completely, as you are now genuinely satisfied and your body wont need to crave more food because it has all the stuff it needs now. This is something I have some personal experience with, years ago when I originally started exercising I would get cravings for sugar all the time. With my current balanced diet, I cant recall the last time I had a craving. NO KIDDING.

Ok so heres how to make the greatest muscle building salad:

about 1-2 cups spinach leaves

about 1-2 cups varied leaf lettuce

shredded carrots

1/2 of a mature avocado, diced

2 hard boiled eggs, diced (organic, free range is best)

3 Tbsp chopped pecans

1/4 cup dried cranberries

top with homemade dressing made of balsamic vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, and Udo’s Choice Oil (3/4 of total liquid should come from the

vinegar)

Mix it all up and you’ve got one delicious and insanely nutritious salad. Heres the macronutrient breakdown:

Protein: 23 g, Carbohydrates: 48 g, Fiber: 12 g, Fat: 45 g, Calories: 650

Before you click off this page in anger for me telling you to eat such a high calorie and fat meal, you have to remember to modify your own portion size for your goal. This portion size is for me to preserve an intake of around 3000 calories if you are eating about 2000 calories for example just scale back the meal size.

Another thing to know about this meal is that I really don’t worry about how much fat is in it, as I know all the fat used in this meal is healthful and will be put to exellent use by my body. Now for the carbohydrates. In this meal there is 12 grams of fibre in a total of 48 grams of carbs, I have no problem with this ratio. A exellent advantage of this meal is that the good fats and the protein act to slow down the absorption of the carbs, leading to a good blood sugar response which helps to maintain your weight.

The bodybuilders among you may be thinking there should be more protein in this meal. There is about 23 grams of protein in the salad which is rather good, with 14 grams from the easily digested supply in the eggs. The meal also has plenty of healthful fats which increase the use of the protein as the

body wont need to use your protein for energy and can now use it exclusively for muscle development and anything else it needs to do with amino acids in the body.

This meal overall has a exellent mix of good low GI carbs which are high in fibre, healthful fats, good quality protein and plenty of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other stuff important to your body

Can an avocado tree be planted in a desert environment and grow?

In Palm Springs, California the temperature will at times get up to 120 degrees. It’s considered a desert climate. Can I grow an avocado tree and expect it to thrive and bear fruit?

Hmmm, Avacodo is typically tropical to subtropical, & very large growing, up to 80+ feet tall, & require ample water until established. I’ve never known anyone to grow them in an arid climate, with extreme high temps. or low temps (dessert winter nights) . But if you deside to try it, make sure to give it plenty of water till established. My guess tho’ is the exteme heat/sun light will make it difficult!!! Good luck

No “at home” recipies work. Use Malathion and Sevin

There could be bounteous types of baldness, major among

these are patches of baldness usually grow back,

rapid shedding after childbirth, fever, or sudden weight

loss and thinning from tight braids or ponytails. Baldness

can be found both in males and females, but men are

more susceptible to this paradox. This has been

attributed to male sex hormone called testosterone. I personally beat on my chest because I am appreciative of all of the testosterone that’s pumping in my system! Some of the other offenders causing baldness are scalp infection, oiliness or dirtiness of the scalp and hair, and

excessive lacquering of hair.

Alopecia areata is yet another determinant of hair loss or

baldness, this dermatological infirmity is caused by

person’s own immunity attacking the hair follicles.

Hair loss is not a quick fire spectacle. Hair loss or

baldness takes a long time, unless because of extreme cases like

chemotherapy. Not every male will experience baldness,

but for sure, he will have thin hair over a period of time.

Although lot of research has taken place in this area,

nothing exact has been found to arrest hair loss or stop

balding process. It is estimated that around 100 hairs are

lost in a 24-hour cycle. This doesn’t mean baldness.

For years wiser people have been discussing effect of

diet on baldness. Wholesome silica, calcium & iron rich

diet can reduce hair loss or arrest baldness. Studies in

the past have shown that silica therapy slowed baldness.

Shampoo containing organic silica was found to a helping hand

thwart baldness, stimulate hair growth and assure

beautiful shine, luster and durability. Outer coverings of

potatoes, green & red peppers and cucumbers comprise of

silica. Bean sprouts are also stiff in silica. Eat whole

foods including sprouts.

Commendable intake of vegetables can improve your vitamin C

score leading to higher iron absorption. Vitamin E is

important for energy-giving hair improvement. Eat avocados, nuts,

seeds, and olive oil on a regular basis. If thyroid

dysfunction is the purpose of baldness vitamin A and iodine

food can help stave off baldness. Eat vegetables such as

carrots or spinach in unrefined, cold-pressed seed oils

such as flax, walnut or pumpkin seed and sea salt. Take

turnips, cabbage, mustard, soy beans, peanuts, pine nuts

and millet if there is a deficiency of iodine. Dried fruits,

green & leafy vegetables, cherry juice are pleasing sources.

Diet should avoid these – cold foods & drinks, sugary

foods, fatty foods, animal protein, fruit, especially citrus,

tomatoes, tofu, millet, salt and dairy products.

Gastrointestinal tract can be the transgressor for female

baldness. It could be a sign of insufficient stomach acids;

It could also mean a deficiency of protein, zinc and other

nutrients. Taking two acidophilus tablets after or between

meals (four to six tablets per day) for two months will

support. Females are greatly affected due to anemic

conditions, leading to accelerated baldness. Let the skirmish continue to withstand baldness!
