Healing Cancer with Proper Diet

Avoid all chlorine and fluoride in your diet. This includes avoiding tap water and foods made with tap water. Chlorine and fluoride destroys many phytonutrients and other nutrients, thus the damage done to the food during processing, if chlorine is used, is permanent and cannot be reversed. This means, for example, not drinking soda pop or any other drinks that have been made by mixing tap water with something else. You should not buy bottled grape juice because during processing, the chlorine in the tap water destroyed many phytonutrients. The damage cannot be reversed.

All vegetables should be organic, if possible. Green vegetables, including juiced grasses and sprouts, must be the foundation of a good cancer diet. The fiber, enzymes, chlorophyll, minerals, and many nutrients are essential for your cancer diet. Juicing vegetables and grasses will help get more nutrients into the body. However, some whole vegetables should be eaten in order to get the fiber. Fiber is critical to a cancer treatment. As with all juices, if you make the juice from the actual foods, the juice should be drunk immediately after they are prepared. In cases where many small doses of a fresh vegetable juice are needed to be taken, the juice can be refrigerated during the day.

You should have organic, fresh salads/vegetables/juiced grasses/sprouts for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Many of the other foods that are allowed on this diet should be mixed in with the salad, except for the vegetable juices.

Vegetables that are known anti-cancer foods include broccoli, asparagus, beets, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, egg-plant, green and yellow squash, fresh green beans and peas, peppers, spinach, mustard greens, collards, kale, lettuce, okra, parsley, scallions, radishes, Swiss chard, watercress, sea vegetables, such as nori, wakame and niziki, wheat grass juice, barley grass powder, turnips, and sprouted grains or beans. Also eat lots of garlic and onion.

A warning about sprouts. Even sprouts purchased in health food stores have been shown to have very dangerous bacteria in them. Wash them very well, but it is even better to make them yourself.

Only whole almonds, whole macadamia nuts and whole walnuts are allowed on a cancer diet. Cashews are strictly prohibited. Almonds and macadamia nuts both have laetrile, and both are acceptable. Walnuts have the very critical omega 3. Other nuts should be used very sparingly. Peanuts (which are not really nuts) and cashews both have too much fungus and should not be used at all. Nuts should be used sparingly.

By a very wide margin, the best foods in the world are wheatgrass juice, barley grass juice, spirulina and chlorella. Only a small number of vegetables can even come close to these superfoods. However, most people are not going to sprout grass (search the Internet for the phrase: "wheatgrass kits" if you want to do it). Thus, many vendors make a variety of qualities of parsley powder, kale powder, barley powder or powder made from a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, and grasses. Such foods are absolutely required for a cancer treatment.

Legumes, are allowed to be eaten by cancer patients, but only in moderation and only to stabilize the weight of the patient or to provide protein.

Soy products are a highly controversial issue among alternative health experts. Some experts love some soy products, and others hate all soy products. It is up to your own judgment on this issue. All soy products should be avoided except fresh soy sprouts. Soy sprouts have an impressive number of anti-cancer nutrients and are acceptable as part of your salads, if you can make your own soy sprouts.

Whole grains can be used only when a cancer patient is fighting dangerous weight loss. If the weight loss is uncontrolled, they should consider a cachexia treatment plan, based on Hydrazine Sulphate. Yeast, which every cancer patient has throughout their body, converts complex carbohydrates into simple carbohydrates, so even whole grains should be avoided when possible. In any case, avoid commercially stored grains and potatoes. Another reason to avoid even whole grains is that over the decades the soil has become acidic and because of the soil many whole grains have more fungus than they did many decades ago. Corn and rice (because of the way they are stored) are grains that should be totally avoided.

Yeast (Baker's and Brewer's) should be completely avoided. This is another reason for avoiding processed bread and other bakery products. Japanese research links breast cancer with the ingestion of goods baked with yeast. The problem is mycotoxins, which are waste products of yeast. There are many health problems that can be directly attributed to yeast, including arteriosclerosis, obesity, and AIDS. No flour (using yeast) can be used in a cancer diet, not even if whole grains are used!

All beef, all pork, all fish, all turkey, all chicken, all dairy, and eggs, should be forbiden during a cancer treatment. The only exception is that if a person is fighting weight loss, some fresh, freshwater fish can be eaten if that is the only thing the cancer patient will eat (e.g. they won't eat beans or other legumes). Avoid all dairy products, including butter, all cheeses and all malts, except cottage cheese or skim milk when used in the Budwig Diet. One exception is that pregnant and nursing women should eat two eggs per day because the choline is necessary for the baby's brain development and the baby takes precedence since two eggs a day is not life-threatening to a cancer patient. If a person must have milk, the only acceptable variety is unprocessed goat's milk, from organically grown and grazing goats.

Meat also uses up the two critical enzymes trypsin and chymotrypsin, which are critical to allowing the immune system to kill cancer cells, though more potent enzymes have now been found. Vegetable proteins do not use up those enzymes. Another reason to avoid meat is the accumulation of fecal matter in the colon. The colon should be relatively clear during a cancer treatment so that the body can absorb as many nutrients as possible. "All foods which ferment in the bowel should be avoided. Absolutely no meat or fish!

Diethylstilbestrol has been shown by the FDA to cause cancer of the uterus, breast and other reproductive organs. This is an artificial sex hormone widely used in food production. Dangerous residues of stilbestrol are in 85% of all the meat sold in the United States. This is the main reason why 15 countries around the world now refuse to import American meat. 21 nations have a total ban on the use of stilbestrol in food production or processing. Nitrosamines cause cancer of the liver, stomach, brain, bladder, kidneys and several other organs. When chemical preservatives and color enhancers are ingested, they cause the body to produce nitrosamines. Another source is nitrates and nitrites, which are heavily added to meat during processing.

Meat is a dead matter, low in minerals, and produces uric acid in excess which is a waste product. The incidence of cancer is in direct proportion to the amount of animal proteins, particularly meat, in the diet. However it is true that devitalized, processed, and sugared food can also cause cancer even in vegetarians. Far more often though, when cancer strikes, those eating the junk foods are also eating meat. Nations and groups which consume less meat have less cancer. Hospital records show that Seventh-day Adventists, who eat little or no meat, suffer far less from cancer than the average meat-eating American. Dr. Willard J. Visek, research scientist at Cornell University, stated that the high protein diet of Americans is linked to the high incidence of cancer in the U.S. Another cancer physician, who also worked with hundreds of cancer patients, said that anyone who does not eat meat, eats only good food, and does all he can to protect his liver, may never get cancer. Cancer would be almost unheard of if no devitalized food or meats were eaten. Cancer cannot exist where there is a pure bloodstream.

Cancer cells are able to grow by making the amino acids of protein available for their growth at the expense of the body as a whole. Meat, especially red meat, being the most readily assimilable protein, becomes a banquet for cancer cells. Emphasizing the use of plant sources of vegetable protein such as legumes and beans that contain cancer-fighting compounds should be a prominent part of an anti-cancer diet.

Meat does have some nutrients that help prevent and deal with cancer. Meat does have nutrients that are good for your immunity system. Meats have a low glycemic index, which is good. The problem is that meat overall does far more harm that good to your cancer treatment. However, there are situations where eating meat, especially turkey or chicken, is not only acceptable, but advised. For example, if a person has been on a very restrictive liquid diet for two weeks or more, it would be advisable to eat some meat to rebuild the protein in the person's body. Also, consider a person who weighs very little (i.e. less than 120 pounds) when they begin a cancer diet. A cancer diet typically causes a person to lose weight, but by eating some meat while on the diet, the weight of the person may stabilize before it gets too low.

All man-made sweeteners (e.g. aspartame, NutraSweet, Equal) and fat substitutes should be avoided. These items are most often associated with brain cancer, but everyone should avoid them. This is one of many reasons soda pops are out of the question. Soda pops are also acidic. here is only one acceptable sweetener in a cancer diet, Stevia, which is an herb.

You should absolutely avoid eating refined sugar and refined grains and anything else refined. These things not only feed the fungus and yeast in your body, they also feed the cancer cells. The yeast in flour makes things even worse. Do not eat anything where yeast, fungus or mould is used, added or is a part of. Refined sugar and other simple sugars also interfere with your immunity system. These substances also interfere with getting Vitamin C and oxygen into the cancer cells. Sugar also depletes the body of key minerals and other nutrients because of its acidity. It is not the acidity that directly destroys the minerals, the acidity causes the body to use the minerals to regulate the pH level in the body. The same is true of all acidic foods.

The chain reaction caused in the body by acidic foods (due to the body's attempts to keep the blood at a level pH) is the cause, or a major contributing factor, to almost all chronic diseases, including cancer. It would take an entire book to describe how the body keeps its pH normal, and the ramifications of these processes.

Honey is a case of both the good and the bad. Honey contains simple sugars, the fructose (38 percent) and glucose (31 percent) feed cancer cells. The good news is that honey contains powerful phenolic antioxidants. However, like grape juice, it should be avoided.

The only fruits that are allowed on this diet, without restrictions, are unsweetened lime, unsweetened lemon, and avocados. That is it. Lemons are actually a required part of any cancer treatment because of their beneficial effect on the liver and because they get oxygen into the body. Lemon juice and lime juice should be taken primarily just before bedtime. One exception to this general rule is special fruit "fasts," such as the Johanna Brandt Grape Cure. When the body gets nothing but a potent fruit mush, it is a potent cancer healing program. Another exception to these general rules are for those on a cesium chloride protocol. They are allowed to eat fruits rich in potassium in order to meet their potassium quota.

There are some mushrooms that are used in cancer treatments, generally as supplements. Realizing that some mushrooms kill cancer cells, but are at the same time primarily a fungus, take heed. Mushrooms are one of the good and bad foods. Use with caution. The good news about mushrooms is that they do contain polysaccharides, which are essential to the immunity system. Mushroom supplements such as beta glucan are certainly acceptable to a cancer diet.

Seaweed is also high in polysaccharides, and anti-cancer properties. It is highly recommended. Brown seaweed has at least 3 nutrients that kill cancer cells; furanone, fuecoiden, and algenic acid.

Refined salt may be a major cause of cancer. Refined salt, the wrong fats, margarine and butter are the main causes of red blood cells sticking together, causing them to absorb less oxygen and making hemoglobin a free meal for yeast and fungus. The clumped together red blood cells do not get as much oxygen into the cells of the body. Also, the clumped together red blood cells cannot pass through the smaller arteries/capillaries, meaning much less (if any) oxygen gets to cells in these areas of the body, and some of these cells may be turned to anaerobic (i.e. cancerous). On the other hand, natural sea salt has a very similar mineral content as human blood. It is truly a health food as long as you don't eat too much of it. Sea water salts are actually a complex blend of trace minerals, as well as calcium and magnesium salts. This complex blend is essential to life.

Other foods you should absolutely avoid are trans fats, meaning trans fatty acids or partially hydrogenated oils. Trans fatty acids may be one of the major causes of cancer. They become part of the cell's wall (replacing cholesterol) and make the cell wall rigid or sticky and can make the cell anaerobic (i.e. the first step to becoming cancerous) because large oxygen clusters cannot get into the cells. Like refined salt, these fats also destroy the electrical charge of red blood cells, causing them to "stick" together. When this happens, among other things, the red blood cells do not get to many cancer cells, meaning the cancer cells get far less oxygen (if any), meaning they thrive because they are anaerobic.

Another bad food for cancer patients is polyunsaturated oils. Polyunsaturated oils (e.g. corn oils sold in supermarkets everywhere) promote the growth of small blood vessels (by promoting the production of "bad" prostaglandins). This is bad for cancer because it allows tumors to grow new blood vessels. However, these small blood vessels are good for preventing strokes. Thus, while on a cancer diet avoid polyunsaturated oils.

All herbs and spices are acceptable, except black pepper and other highly acidic spices. Several herbs, such as Sheep Sorrel and Black Walnut, are known to be strong anti-cancer foods. Turmeric, which contains curcumin, is a spice that is a potent anti-cancer food. As with all foods, the storage of herbs can cause them to be high in fungus.

You can forget about eating at a restaurant, big or small, formal or informal, unless it has a menu specifically for organic, raw foods.

Condiments are absolutely forbidden. One of the most acidic foods on earth is black pepper (black pepper is a major cause of acid reflux disease). Avoid soy sauce, pickled vegetables, relish, green olives, sauerkraut, and cucumber pickles.

Basically, any "refined" or processed food that contains sugar, refined salt, aspartame, MSG, trans-fatty acids, coloring, other additives, or refined flour should be avoided. The cooking of food kills critical enzymes needed for digestion.

While it is true that cooking does release some vitamins, by a very wide margin, overall it is better to eat food raw, if it can be safely eaten raw.

Stop smoking (no matter what kind of cancer you have), because smoking puts more than 100 carcinogens in your body. Tobacco is also very high in sugar, fungi and yeasts. Part of this is due to they way tobacco leaves are processed. Alcohol (which is a "primary mycotoxin"), which interferes with all treatment plans. Completely avoid caffeine because it restricts the blood vessels, meaning less oxygen gets to the cancer cells. It is also acid-forming and mucoid-forming.

Peanuts are perhaps the number one food that should be avoided because they are so high in fungus. Foods that have little resistance when they are growing, are frequently high in fungus. Corn, rice (because of the way it is stored) and potatoes, and any foods with corn, rice or potatoes, should be avoided, also because of fungus and the way they are stored. Cashews are another food high in fungus.

Avoid processed apple juice. Avoid oranges, tangerines, and dried fruits, for a variety of reasons. Do not microwave any foods during a cancer diet.

Every cancer patient should drink as much natural water (i.e. natural spring water or natural artesian water, processed with ozone) as they can, up to a gallon a day. Also, a cancer patient should get as much exercise as reasonable. Exercise pumps the lymph system and helps get toxins out of the body. Even if a person can do no more than lift 3 pound weights for 10 minutes while sitting in a chair, it will help.

Dietary experts recommend that every person should eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables every day. The importance of fruits and vegetables to a healthy diet has been known for quite some time, but studies have shown that very few people eat the amount of fruits and vegetables recommended for a healthy diet.

That's a shame, since eating a sufficient number of fruits and vegetables just may be the single most effective thing you can do to improve your overall health. The five a day approach to healthy eating may be the single most important strategy you can adopt for a healthier lifestyle.

The many health benefits of eating fruits and vegetables have been established for quite some time now. Study after study has shown that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables lowers the risk of certain cancers, heart disease and other chronic diseases and conditions. Some studies have suggested that as many as 35% of cancer deaths can be attributed to diet, and that diets high in fats and low in fruits and vegetables contributes to unnecessary cancer deaths.

Fruits and vegetables have a lot of advantages besides just their nutritional importance. For one thing, they taste great and add a great deal of variety to everyday meals. Fruits and vegetables come in such a wide variety of colors, textures and flavors that they can be used in virtually every meal. Those seeking to maximize their consumption of fruits and vegetables should get into the habit of using fruits in salads, as toppings and as garnishes.

In addition to their great taste, fruits and vegetables are packed full of many essential vitamins and minerals, including many micronutrients that are not included in packaged vitamin supplements. For instance, foods like butternut squash, pumpkins, carrots, mangoes, peaches, pawpaws and green leafy vegetables are rich in beta carotene. Beta carotene is vital for healthy skin and eyes.

In addition, most varieties of fruits and vegetables contain vitamin C, another important vitamin and a strong antioxidant. Good sources of vitamin C include Brussels sprouts, citrus fruits, strawberries, broccoli, nectarines and kiwi fruit. Many fruits and vegetables, including spinach, broccoli and avocadoes, are also good sources of vitamin E, another excellent antioxidant.

Men and women alike should always strive to eat a healthy diet, but women have an extra incentive to get all the nutrition they need. Proper nutrition is essential to a healthy pregnancy, and some of the baby's biggest nutritional needs happen before the pregnancy is discovered. Folic acid is perhaps the best known essential nutrient for pregnant women. Folic acid has been proven effective at preventing a variety of birth defects, including Spina Bifida. Good dietary sources of folic acid include Brussels sprouts, broccoli, spinach and oranges. In addition, due to its importance to women of child bearing years, many common foods such as cereals and breads, are supplemented with folic acid.

In addition to their importance as source of vitamins and minerals, fruits and vegetables also provide essential dietary fiber. Adequate fiber in the diet is important in preventing heart disease and some kinds of cancer.

Another great feature of fruits and vegetables, especially to those watching their weight, is the high nutrition, low fat, low calorie nature of these foods. Fruits and vegetables contain very low levels of fats, and a diet low in fat can be quite effective for long term weight loss. In addition, fruits and vegetables contain no cholesterol, and they are lower in calories than many other types of foods.

With all these things going for them, it is no wonder so many dietary experts recommend eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Not only are fruits and vegetables delicious and nutritious, but they can be quite inexpensive as well. Buying fruits and vegetables that are locally grown, and that are in season, is usually the most cost effective way to get the freshest fruits and veggies at the lowest possible cost.

This buying strategy also helps to ensure a steady stream of new fruits and vegetables every month, as some go out of season while others are just coming in. Trying a variety of different fruits and vegetables, including some you may not be familiar with, is also a great way to create exciting new dishes and prevent yourself from becoming bored with the same old diet. Whether your goal is to lose weight or just increase your level of fitness, it is hard to go wrong with a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

Fast Lunch Ideas

If you are a working man, you know how important lunch is. You can't function without a good lunch. A good lunch is the difference between feeling great during the afternoon and feeling worn out. Many times we skip on lunch. We don't either eat the right things, or don't eat at all. I know several people who don't eat any lunch at all. Especially women, they think they can skip this meal and not have to worry about it. I'm the type of person who can't skip a meal. Maybe one of the reasons is that I can't turn down a good meal. Though, if I don't eat, I can feel it. Nothing will make you feel like shit quicker than skipping a meal. We all know what it feels like.

What do you do? You don't have time to fix a good lunch before you go to work. Or do you? Of course you do. If you are in a relationship, you have more than enough time. One thing I would suggest is that you alternate fixing each others lunch. One day you fix both of your lunches, while the next day have her fix both of them. This will give you time to do the other things that you need to do.

You can also fix your lunch before you go to bed at night. By doing this, you don't have to rush yourself. Which, will make your day that much better. I hate having to rush in the morning. What kinds of things should you fix? Here we will go into some simple things to fix.

Tuna and Bell Pepper Pocket

3 (6-ounce) cans drained, solid white tuna (in water) ½ cup chopped bell peppers ¼ cup chopped celery ¼ cup sliced onions 8-12 lettuce leaves (preferably green) 2 medium-size sliced tomatoes (8-12 slices total) 3 tbsp. fat-free Italian dressing 1 tbsp. dried oregano 1 tbsp. black pepper 4 (6-inch) pita breads Combine tuna, green peppers, celery and onions in a bowl. In another bowl, combine dressing, black pepper and oregano, pour it over the tuna mix and stir. Refrigerate for a few hours. When serving, put 2-3 tomato slices and 2-3 lettuce leaves in each pita bread. Add tuna mix to pitas. There's enough for 4 servings.

I love this. I don't think there is a better easier lunch item than this.

Black Bean Salad ½ (8-ounce) can drained black beans 1 (15-ounce) can drained whole kernel corn 4 chopped green onions ½ chopped green bell pepper 3 diced tomatoes ½ avocado peeled, pitted and diced ½ (2-ounce) jar pimentos 2 tbsp. lemon juice 3 ounces fat-free Italian salad dressing ¼ tsp. garlic salt Combine Italian dressing, black beans, green onions, corn, bell pepper, avocado, pimento, tomatoes, and lemon juice in a bowl. Add and toss pepper, salt and garlic. Store in Tupperware and refrigerate. Offers up three delicious servings for that big appetite of yours.

This is another great one.

Smoked Chicken Sandwich ½ (8-ounce) loaf sourdough bread ¼ tbsp. vinegar 2 tbsp. chopped parsley 1/8 cup low-fat mayonnaise or fat-free salad dressing ¼ cup chopped bell peppers (you can't go wrong with bell peppers) ½ small onion thinly sliced ½ medium sized tomato sliced 8 (1-ounce) slices low-fat mozzarella cheese 2 cloves minced garlic 8 (1-ounce) slices lean chicken 1 tbsp. black pepper Slice the loaf of bread horizontally. Remove some soft bread from inside each half. Stir mayonnaise and vinegar together. Add parsley, bell peppers, black peppers, and garlic to the mix. Let stand for 15 minutes. Layer the bottom of the loaf with 4 slices of chicken and cheese, then layer with half of the onions and half of the tomatoes. Spread half of the mayonnaise concoction and repeat the entire process from the start with the remaining ingredients. Close the sandwich with the second bread shell and chill until it's ready to serve. When serving, cut loaf into 3 wedges (secure loaf with wooden sticks for a better cut). Makes 3 servings. There you have some easy lunch ideas.

Try these, you are sure to love them.

The closer a food is to its natural state, the better it is for you.  Most health and fitness professionals recommend you eat fresh fruits and vegetables and stay away from fats, particularly saturated fats should be avoided at all times.  However, the truth is you do not need to avoid dietary fats if you make the healthy natural choices and burn more calories in physical activity than you consume.  Following is a list of some of the healthy fatty foods to enjoy.

Healthy Fats to Enjoy

• Avocados - The fat in avocados is about 60% monounsaturated, 25% saturated, and 15% polyunsaturated.  Avocados are healthy natural food that provides many nutrients, fiber and healthy fats.

• Coconut fat - Coconut fat is a healthy natural saturated fat, this is a surprising fact  to most people. The sources of coconut fat are coconut milk,  coconut oil, and fresh coconut. Coconut oil is excellent for cooking, baking and stir-frying.  Most health and fitness professionals are convinced that tropical oils are unhealthy.  A big portion of natural food supply on earth is composed of saturated fats, substances for humans to eat.  It is only when we take natural food and put it through different kinds of chemical processing that it becomes unhealthy.

• Non-hydrogenated palm oil is highly saturated and healthy tropical oil.

• Extra virgin olive oil - Olive oil is about 70% monounsaturated, 16% saturated, and 14% polyunsaturated.  Extra virgin olive oil that comes from the first pressing of the olives, has an abundance of antioxidants.  Olive oil is one of the healthiest choices for liquid oils.  Combine a small amount of olive oil with vinegar to make salad dressing, this is much healthier than store bought salad dressings.

• Dark chocolate - The cocoa bean is a concentrated source of antioxidants. The fat portion of the cocoa bean, cocoa butter is a healthy natural fat, composed of about 58% saturated fat, 38% monounsaturated fat, and 4% polyunsaturated fat.  Dark chocolates are about 50% cocoa,  milk chocolates are about 30% cocoa,  the remainder are milk fat, sugar and corn sweeteners.  Get high quality dark chocolate that has cocoa content between 65% - 80%.  A dark chocolate with cocoa content in this range will contain mostly cocoa and little sugar, it has a creamy texture with sweet taste.  Although dark chocolate can be a healthy treat, it is high in calorie, so keeping it to one or two square.

• Fish such as wild salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring and trout.  Most fish or seafood is good sources of natural omega-3 polyunsaturated fats, but the fish listed here are the best sources of omega-3.

• Nuts - walnuts, almonds, peanuts, and cashews are good sources of healthy unprocessed fats, minerals and other nutrients.  Almonds and cashews are great sources of monounsaturated fats, while walnuts are a good source of unprocessed  polyunsaturated fats, including omega-3.  Get raw or roasted nuts, and avoid nuts that are cooked in oil.

• Seeds - sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, flax seeds, etc. All of these seeds are great  sources of natural unprocessed healthy fats.  Studies shown that flax seeds has omega-3 content. Fresh flax seed could be added to salad and yogurt.

• The fat in organically raised animals - This is the area where most people have been misinformed.  Animal fat is good for us if it came from a healthy animal.  Human beings have flourished on animal fats for hundreds of years.  Unfortunately, animal products today come from animals which fattened up with hormones, and fed with unnatural feed.  Choose organically raised meats, eggs, and dairy.

This article has shed some light on the truth about dietary fats and brings about their importance in a healthy diet.  This is simply a guide to show a healthy diet including the healthy saturated fats is important to overall health.

It's been a popular misconception for a long time now that ingesting fat will MAKE you fat.  Unfortunately, this is not true and anyone subscribing to this theory is doing themselves a huge disservice.

Did you know that if you starve your body of fats, it will start to hang on to fat even harder, which makes it even harder for you to lose the fat on your body.  Don't kid yourself.  Dietary fat is not the same as body fat.  Nowhere even close.

That being said there is a huge difference between the types of dietary fat you can choose to consume.  Some are very harmful while others are highly beneficial.  The trick here is to avoid hydrogenated oils and trans fats at all costs.  As a matter of fact, the main rule of thumb is to avoid anything that's 'processed' and try to stick with oils and fats that are as close to their natural state as possible.

So, stop being freaked out about eating foods that contain fat, and start eating in a way that will not only help you in your fat loss goals but will make you a healthier person overall.

Here's some great foods that contain 'healthy fats' that you can incorporate into your diet.

Avocados

Avocados are full of oleic acid (a monounsaturated fat) which can help lower cholesterol.  They are also high in potassium and countless other vitamins and minerals.  They should be on the top of your eating list.  Add them to salads or smear the pulp on toast for a tasty treat.

Nuts

Raw nuts are also a great source of healthy fats, as well as many vitamins and minerals.  Don't make the mistake of buying the salted and roasted kind.  Usually they've been roasted in some kind of unhealthy oil, but just the act of cooking the nuts destroys some of the healthy properties otherwise found in raw nuts.  Keep them raw for full health benefits and to keep the healthy fats intact.  Some great ones are Almonds and Walnuts.  Use them in salads or snack on them alone or with fruit and vegetables.

Seeds

Similar to nuts, these are also chock full of healthy fats.  Again, don't get the roasted and salted kind.  Eat them raw.  They're great on salads, or even mixed in with your favorite yogurt to give it a little extra crunch.  Some fantastic seeds to incorporate into your diet are Sunflower, Pumpkin and Sesame seeds.

Flax Seed is also a great source of healthy oils.  You can buy Flax Seed Oil at almost any store these days, but one word of caution:  it is very unstable and can go rancid fast unless refrigerated.  ONLY buy it from a store that keeps it in a refrigeration unit and get it home and into your own refrigerator immediately to avoid spoilage.

Salmon

Salmon is absolutely full of omega 3 fish oil, which has been proven wildly beneficial to health as well as fat loss diet programs.  Make sure you're getting enough salmon.  Do yourself an even bigger favor and try to eat wild salmon as opposed to the farmed stuff whenever possible.  The wild salmon tend to have higher levels of omega 3 and other excellent nutrients.  If you aren't a fan of seafood, pick up some Krill Oil capsules in your local health food store.  You'll get the same great benefits from consuming your fish oil this way.

Other Seafood

Tuna is also a great source of healthy fats, but beware to eat only in moderation due to mercury counts.  Once a week is plenty.  Shrimp, prawns and other shellfish are also full of healthy fats but tend to be higher in cholesterol.  However, there is good cholesterol (HDL) and bad cholesterol (LDL) and unless you've been diagnosed with high cholesterol, I wouldn't worry too much about the cholesterol in shellfish.

Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil has long been given a bad rap as being high in trans fat.  However, this is one of the most healthy good fats you can ingest and happens to also be a very stable oil, which makes it ideal for cooking with.  So, don't be afraid of coconut oil anymore.  Turns out it's good for you.

Keep in mind as you incorporate these foods into your diet, that fat is more calorie dense than carbohydrates and protein so while you SHOULD be eating them, moderation is key so you don't accidentally sabotage your weight loss efforts.  Keep an eye on that caloric intake and keep it in check while adding these foods into your dietary mix.

avocado day
avocado day
How can I make an avocado salad?

I had a taco salad the other day at a Mexican restaurant, and for the first time, I tried an raw avocado, and it was really good. I bought some avocados and want to incorporate it into my green salad.

avocado. wow. my fav. can be eaten in soooo many simple ways. by it;s self with ANY mix of onions(red white pearl yellow shallots) garlic tomato cilantro parsley salt pepper vin lemon lime any green spinach lettce anything it is such a versatile flavor. sub mayo in sandwhiches for avocado ( or dont sub just add avocado) smash it into your rice for veggie flavored rice. or add to chicken soups before serving. look into using avocados as your serving dish for many things.

There are many benefits to use avocado butter, not the least of them that it makes your skin look alive, vibrant and full of health. Add to that the fact that it is completely natural, and it becomes a very attractive choice as an addition to your range of preferred skin care products.

There are several synthetic alternatives you could choose, each of which claims the same benefits as avocado butter, but have you really considered their benefits and the truth of what they claim?  Do you understand the meaning of that large ingredients list?  Let's digress for just a short while and discuss the vitamin and supplement industry.

Supplements are available in almost any shape and form:  vitamins, minerals and even complex mixtures known as athletic supplements are marketed as being effective in improving fitness, stamina and just about any other health benefit you can imagine. Yet the experts are still out on the difference between the actual benefits claimed for these and those realized in practice.  They are not necessarily the same, and there are some real biochemical reasons for that.

The reason is synergy.  That word relates to different substances working better together than either could apart. Take the example of a secretary and the guy that delivers her letters by courier.  To outsiders, the secretary is great at getting these letters and invoices delivered on time. However, that is meaningless if the courier is not on duty - it gets delivered a day late.

In the same way, many vitamins and minerals are well known for their beneficial effects, but there is no point in taking a calcium supplement if the couriers - magnesium and vitamins C and D - are missing! They are the substances that actually take the calcium into your bone structure. That is why natural sources are better:  they have the courier and the secretary provided in the one package, just as they should be. That is also why avocado butter is a far superior skin care substance than any synthetic product.

It contains the antioxidant vitamins A, E and D that kill of the free radicals that age your skin. A very scientific and comforting explanation of how it works, unlike that of the synthetic emulsified oils, containing surfactants that can damage your skin, rather than help it, and other even more toxic substances. It contains a natural sunscreen that protects your skin and hair from the damaging effects of the ultraviolet radiation of the sun.

Avocado butter also contains lecithin and unsaturated fatty acids that are beneficial to your skin, and it melts at only 30C - 35C making it very easy to apply tom your skin.
It can be used to moisturize dry skin ad it can also help to reduce the appearance of age spots, sometimes referred to as liver spots, caused by the oxidation of fatty deposits just under your skin.

So, don't use these potentially toxic artificial labeled products, but try pure avocado oil next time you are looking for a skin care product.  You won't regret it, and will likely be hooked on it for life: your skin certainly will!

The fruit flush three day detox diet can be particularly used for cleansing after festive season. Jay Robb's methodology of helping the body get rid of all the impurities body would accumulate by piling up the body system by over stuffing oneself with all sorts of food and drink during the holiday season is quite a craze.

The objective of this diet plan is allowing the body to loose all those additional kilos gained by having the delicious meals and drinks during an extended party, a vacation or during festivals. Regaining the figure and vitality is the mantra of this diet. Due to over indulgence in food besides putting on weight, the system also gets clogged up and requires cleansing. The option to look for is the all fruit diet.

As the name suggests, the fruit flush is a 3-day diet consisting of just fruits. Fruits help in dissolving stored toxins, the water and fiber in the fruits help to flush out wastes aiding in weight reduction. It also strengthens the body and helps in improving the metabolism of liver which plays a vital role in discarding the toxins.

1st day: the pre-flush

On the first day of this diet plan between 8 am and 4 pm one has to drink protein mix (11/4 cup protein powder and 1 quart water), this has to be consumed every two hours. Make it a point to eat 3 to 6 cups of raw vegetable salad and 3 to 6 ounces of lean chicken, beef, fish or turkey at 6 pm. This food should have a topping of 1 to 2 ounces of olive oil or flax seed oil, or half avocado and half a lemon juice. After taking each protein milk or drink, one hour later drink water around 8-12-ounces.

2nd and 3rd day: fruit flush three day detox diet

On the second and third day between 8 am and 4 pm help yourself with fresh fruit serving, at an interval of two hours. At 6 pm, like the first day eat a single serving of raw vegetable salad. Along with this also drink one protein drink comprising of 12 ounces of water and 5 tablespoons of protein powder.

Unlike the 30-day detox diet or fasting, the fruit flush three day detox diet can be followed for a period of up to 12 weeks, by following the diet plan for 3 days and taking 4 days off alternately. The diet is based on natural fruits and vegetables and followed uninterrupted, definitely aids in considerable weight loss without any negative effects on the system and functions. The program has had very good reviews. The dieters say the diet is rich in fiber, vitamins and antioxidants and low in potassium and sodium. Hence this kind of diet apart from aiding in detoxifying the body and reducing body weight also improves energy level, ensures regular bowel movements and cleansing the system and improves skin tone.

The fruit flush diet program does not advocate use of any kind of chemicals such as preservatives, laxatives or pills; also Robb does not insist on any particular exercise regime during the course of diet. Inspite of all this there are a few negatives.

One of the important thing is it is a very low calorie diet, hence not a balanced one. It is not a program which can be continued for very long term for reducing weight. It is not ideal if you are on a fat loss program. Many individuals who have tried it are not very convinced with the recommendation of using Robb's protein powder. The affirmative reviews definitely outweigh the negative noises and several dieters give their own handy protein mixtures to the people opting for this diet plan and manage to obtain the desired results of the fruit flush diet program!

Summer is nearly here and so is an increase in the in temperature. No one wants to be stuck in the kitchen on a hot day with the oven going. No, you can't hand them a pop tart or a box of cereal and tell them to get out of your hair, even when that is really what you would rather do. I invested in a George Foreman Grill, so in the summer, I spend a lot of time preparing food on that or using the gas grill outside. So take a look at these tips and see if you can't manage to get out of the kitchen sooner and still give the kids a cheap and fast supper while you beat the heat.

1. Eggbeater Omelet - Pour you some southwestern eggbeaters into a pan, once it is done add some cream cheese and fold it over. Serve with some fresh fruit for a fantastic quick and easy meal that can be enjoyed anytime of the day.

2. Salads are not only a great way to beat the summer heat but they are cheap and fast to make. You can do a basic lettuce and tomato if you want. Or you can dress it put some cheese, boiled eggs and a pack of sandwich meat. Serve with half an avocado stuffed with sour cream or cream cheese. Chill some fresh fruit and mix it for a nice cool fruit salad for desert.

3. Chicken salad. Great for left over chicken, or I buy a precooked chicken at the store to save time, de-bone it, toss in some grapes and pecans, mix with low-fat-mayonnaise and a little honey mustard. You can serve this on a bed of lettuce, as a sandwich, a wrap and it makes a great panini as well.

4. BLT with a Twist. I keep cooked bacon on hand at all times. Mix together tomatoes, cucumbers and mayonnaise and spread onto a whole-wheat wrap then layer some lettuce and bacon evenly over the wrap and roll up. Cut diagonally and serve with some fresh raw broccoli that you have sprinkled with lemon juice...yummy!

5. Pea salad. There is nothing better than a good pea salad. I take a can of early peas (English peas), drain them and add 2 boiled eggs, a small Vidalia onion finely chopped and ¾ cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Mix it all together with some mayonnaise or ranch dressing and a hint of mustard and chill. Serve on a bed of lettuce with some boiled eggs and ham slices. This make a great side dish as well.

Just follow these tips and you'll be out of the kitchen in no time. Your wallet and your air conditioning will thank you now that you have taken the heat out of supper. Now you have fed them a nice cheap and fast supper every day and they aren't complaining about it either. You will find that you feel better during the summer after a lighter meal as well as not being exhausted from the heat of the kitchen.

pasta avocado salad
pasta avocado salad
What Kind of Dressing would you put on this pasta salad?

i'm making a cold pasta salad to take to a friends BBQ tomorrow night.
I've used spiral pasta, avocado, red and green capsicum, bacon, corn kernels, cubed cheese & red onion.
Was just wondering what would be the best type of dressing to put on the salad. What think mayonnaise type dressing or maybe balsamic vinegar- but wasn't sure as i do not eat or make pasta salad very often.

With the ingredients you already have, I would just use a pre bottled vinagrett type dressing.
A simple mayo dressing that I make, for a simple cold pasta dish, is just Mayo and Lawrey's Seasoning Salt
The other ingredients for the pasta dish, are sliced black olives, diced celery, chopped green onion or chives, dry parsley flakes , and maccroni pasta.

To many people, if you say you want a white wine, they think Chardonnay. And while the Chardonnays of many vineyards are delightful, light and tart presenting a rich body and smart nose, many others are awkward, sour or overpowering. These latter ones, and the somewhat unpredictability of the varietal has caused me to search for an alternative, a more reliable alternative, to the ubiquitous Chardonnay. I should say here that most California Chardonnays, and some South African ones, are absolutely wonderful, well-crafted wines with nuanced and multi-layered flavors that entertain without overpowering. However, there are those others....

So I began my quest for the Chardonnay alternative. I learned to enjoy Pinot Grigio, which offers a lovely contrast to the Chardonnay grape and intend to write another article extolling its virtues, which are many. The German whites, Riesling, Liebfraumilch, etc. tend to be too sweet for my tastes, though they are very popular and many people find them quite charming. Then a friend encouraged me to try a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. I had tried this varietal before, but it was European in origin, and consequently expensive and frankly, I didn't find it terribly remarkable. But, this friend of mine is rarely wrong in matters of wine-loving interest, so I trudged to the local wine store and positioned myself in front of the New Zealand section. After a few moments, my eye was caught by a label that I felt was light-hearted and interesting enough to merit my attention. The bottle was not terribly expensive at $9, so I snatched it up and dashed home.

It was a summer evening, and that night's dinner was a light pasta salad with vegetables, feta, black olives and fresh tomatoes in an olive oil and garlic dressing. I had chilled the wine thoroughly, though not overly, and popped the cork expectantly. Pouring myself a small portion, I sampled the nose of the wine and was greeted by the most amazing and almost overpowering freshness of citrus. In fact, not just any citrus, but strong grapefruit. The smell was so specific and strong that I read the entire label of the wine again to make sure that this was indeed grape wine of the variety Sauvignon Blanc with no additives or flavors beyond just the wine. I was startled at the strength of the grapefruit scent and had to know if it extended to the flavor of the wine.

I took a small bit in my mouth and breathed in over it. And while the flavor was redolent with grapefruit, it was not overpoweringly so. In fact, this was an absolutely charming wine with power, nuance, and grace. The citrus quality provided a freshness that I can barely describe except to say that I now enjoy this wine regularly as one of my absolute favorites.

Since then, I have sampled many vineyards' Sauvignon Blanc offerings, and found them to have varying degrees of success. Frankly, my experience has been that Chile produces drinkable, but inferior bottles of this variety, while Australia and New Zealand seem to have mastered the graces of this delightful grape. South Africa, Europe and California are uneven in their efforts and can range from the masterful to the amateur without any noticeable indication by price or availability.

Frankly, this variety has become my very favorite and I seek it in all its forms whenever I can. I encourage you to try it with a nice, light chicken dinner or avocado salad.

avocado dressing salad
is what i'm going to eat tomorrow ok to MAINTAIN healthy weight? im 5ft3, female and slim, also vegetarian?

also i do an active job and work out 3 to 4 times a week, and walk 2 or 3 miles a day

tomorrow i will eat
breakfast - 1/2 cup oats with soy milk and prunes
snack - larabar
lunch - apple and avocado salad with brown roll and hummus, light dressing
snack - apple
dinner - tofu steak with potato and vegetables, yogurt and biscuit for dessert

Sounds lovely, can I join you ? !! it seems healthy and adequate but just keep an eye on your calorie intake if you don't aim to have a weight loss !!

Warm weather brings thoughts of cool food and recipes that don't require a lot of indoor cooking. Who wants to tend a long, slow cooked meal when the sun is out and the warm weather beckons?

Here are three warm weather salads that have become some of my favorite summer salad recipes.

None of them require you to be any where near an oven or hot stove except to boil some water, and all are perfect for even the hottest summer days.

Serve them as side vegetable dishes or as a light lunch with a green salad and crusty bread.

Shrimp and Avocado Salad

This is a lovely salad recipe that is great as a side salad or as a light luncheon recipe. Serve it in lettuce cups for lunch along with some fresh crusty bread and a great dessert. Just perfect!

1 pound frozen cooked shrimp, thawed
1 cup celery, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons Italian salad dressing
4 tablespoons mayonnaise
salt and pepper to taste
1 avocado
2 teaspoons lemon juice

Combine the shrimp, celery, Italian dressing and mayonnaise. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Chill, covered until ready to serve.

When ready to serve, peel and dice the avocado. Mix immediately with the lemon juice to prevent the avocado from going dark. Add to the shrimp mixture and mix gently.

Serves 6

Cucumber Salad

This recipe is delicious, but oh so easy. It's a great recipe to serve company at a barbecue because it gets made ahead and sits in the fridge for a few hours until you are ready for it. The best summer entertaining recipes are ones that don't require the host and hostess to be in the kitchen cooking while guests lounge outside.

3 large cucumbers, peeled and thinly sliced
1 1/4 cups red wine vinegar
1/2 teaspoon celery salt
1/2 head of lettuce, shredded
1 tablespoon honey
good pinch black pepper
1/2 teaspoon fresh dill, chopped
4 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Toss all the ingredients thoroughly in a large salad bowl. Chill for 2 hours before serving.

That's it!

Lime Jello Cottage Cheese Salad

This is a lovely light salad recipe that is perfect for a summer barbecue but also works well all year on a buffet table. The addition of cottage cheese may sound odd, but it is a great flavor mix with the Jello. The crunch of the celery and green pepper add another layer of flavor and fresh taste.

1 - 3 ounce package lime jelly powder
1 cup boiling water
1/2 cup cold water
1 teaspoon vinegar or lemon juice
1/2 cup mayonnaise
salt and pepper
3/4 cup chopped celery
1/2 onion, chopped
1/2 green pepper, chopped

Blend with beater and chill until firm 1" from edge of dish. Turn it into a bowl and beat it until it becomes light and fluffy. Fold in 1 cup cottage cheese, celery, onion and green pepper. Chill fully before serving.

Don't forget that most of your favorite summer salad recipes are great all year round too.

I love avocados with a passion and am always looking for new ways to incorporate that delicious little fruit into my cooking. One of the best things to pair avocado with is delicious, crispy bacon. If you don't believe me, just try making a BLT sandwich with mashed avocado instead of mayonnaise. You'll never go back. Here are two recipes that accomplish just that. Give them a try and see if you don't fall in love with avocado bacon recipes as well.

Avocado Salad With Bacon and Sour Cream

  • 4 slices bacon, chopped
  • 2 avocados - peeled, pitted, and cubed
  • 3 green onions, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • salt to taste
  • red leaf lettuce

Cook the bacon until crisp. Allow it to drain on paper towels to drain off the fat. Crumble the bacon and mix it with the avocados, green onions, sour cream, lemon and salt. Spoon the mixture over red leaf lettuce.

Bacon Stuffed Avocados

  • 8 slices crisp bacon, crumbled.
  • 4 medium avocados, ripe and unpeeled.
  • Lemon juice.
  • ½ cup of butter.
  • ¼ cup of brown sugar.
  • ¼ cup of white wine vinegar.
  • ¼ cup of garlic puree.
  • 1 tablespoon of soy sauce.

Slice the avocados in half, then remove pits and brush with lemon juice. Fill the avocado with bacon.

Get out a small sauce pan and over medium heat stir together the lemon juice, butter, brown sugar, vinegar, garlic and soy sauce. Bring the mixture to a boil, then allow to cool slightly. Pour over the bacon stuffed avocados and serve.

Give these recipes a try and see if they don't quickly become some of your own favorites. You'll quickly turn into an avocado addict as well.

spanish avocado salad

Mexican culture is very interesting and combines features from the prehispanic past and the Spanish colonial period. Mexicans are justifiably proud of their culture, history, and ethnicity.

Mexican city life is not all that different from life in Europe or in the United States, although some Mexican villages still have more traditional ways. Most Mexicans live in large cities and there are more Spanish speaking people in Mexico than in any other country. The Mexican government recognizes over sixty other languages as indigenous Mexican languages.

Mexico is also the second largest Catholic nation in the world after Brazil, with ninety five percent of Mexicans being Catholic. The religion was introduced by the Spanish colonists.

Well Known Mexican Holidays

Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on September 16 and each city, town, and village celebrates its local patron saint once a year. The people burn candles and pray during religious celebrations. They also decorate the churches with colorful utensils and flowers, hold dance competitions, fireworks, parades and parties. You might see bullfighting, cockfighting, and football during village festivals.

Piatas are seen at Mexican fiestas and these are paper mache shapes made to resemble well-known people, animals or fictional characters. They are filled with candy and small toys and hung from the ceiling. The kids take it in turns to hit the piata until it breaks, then they gather up the candy and toys and share them.

The Most Popular Mexican Cuisine

Mexican food is an exotic mixture of European, Aztec, Mayan, Spanish, French and Caribbean food and more. It is tasty and well balanced, both in flavor and in nutritional content. Well known Mexican favorites include tacos, tamales, mole sauce, pozole and enchiladas. There are plenty of Mexican fast food restaurants but the offerings from these establishments bear little resemblance to traditional Mexican food recipes. You can use Mexican recipes to make your own Mexican food at home if there are no good Mexican eateries in your area.

Beans, chicken, maize, beef; potatoes, tomatoes, avocados, guavas, and peanuts are used in many Mexican dishes. Mexican drinks include cinnamon flavored hot chocolate, fruit juices, mescal, Mexican beer, and tequila. There are also several award winning Mexican wineries that produce wine and export it all over the world.

Corn and chili both feature in Mexican recipes and you can get soups, stews, and salads in a Mexican style as well as the more well known dishes. Mexican desserts are excellent and they combine sweet and hot elements for maximum flavor sensation.

Mexican candy is also interesting and chili is sometimes used as a candy flavoring. Sugar skulls called "calaveras de azucar" are made for Day of the Day. Corn flavored candy is also popular in Mexico.

Herbs and spices are cleverly combined with fresh produce to make traditional recipes. Quick authentic Mexican recipes are a great idea if you want to make something different for your family and there are certainly plenty to choose from. By enjoying home cooked Mexican cuisine, you will really appreciate why these foods are so well loved around the world.

watercress avocado salad

So you're thinking about starting an alkaline diet, or maybe you've been eating alkaline foods for a while. Either way, you probably want to know if there's a definitive alkaline foods list out there to help you keep on the right path.

The problem is, due to how different researchers and health professionals define 'alkaline foods', each alkaline foods list that you come across has slightly different foods in the alkaline and acidic categories.

Here are 5 simple steps to help you establish which are acidic and which are alkaline foods:

1. In general leafy, dark green vegetables are alkaline. Eat these to your heart's content - they'll fill you up, there's hardly any calories in them and they're amazingly alkalizing - raw form is best. These include foods such as spinach, kale, cucumber (ok, not 'leafy' but still dark green on the outside :-) ), watercress, lettuce, cabbage, green beans, broccoli. The deep green pigment is due to 'chlorophyll' in the plant - which is pure alkaline sunlight goodness and amazingly nutritious.

2. Cold pressed omega 3 oils such as olive oil, flax seed oil, starflower oil, sesame seed oil and even (virgin) coconut oil are very alkaline. Do not fry or heat your oil, as this acidifies it and in some cases hydrogenates it, which is very harmful. So cold omega 3 oils, which can be used in salads etc are good.

3. Anything sweet is generally out. Sugar is one of the most acidic foods to your body, so obviously things such as cakes, chocolate, sweets and fizzy drink s are a no-no if you're on an alkaline diet. When it comes to fruit, I'm afraid most fruits are acidic. Grapefruits, lemons, limes and avocadoes are the only fruits (aside from tomatoes) that are truly alkaline. Some others are debatably mildly alkaline or neutral - perhaps watermelon or blueberries. It depends on how rigid you want to be with your alkaline diet.

4. Processed foods are acidic. Now this comes down to common sense. If you think of acidic foods as being harmful to your body, then it stands to reason that things such as takeaways, chips, burgers, microwave meals, reconstituted meats and dried packet foods are acidic doesn't it? We all know that these foods are not good for us and should be eaten sparingly, although in the Western world we do consume a lot of this stuff. Following an alkaline diet means a shift to healthier eating.

5. Meat and dairy are acidic. It's as simple as that really - meat and dairy products are highly acidic to you your body so must be limited heavily or eliminated altogether if you're going to go alkaline.

Note for those not familiar with the pH scale

The pH scale measures whether or not a substance is an acidic or alkaline: An acid has a pH of less than 7. The lower the pH the stronger the acid. pH 7 is neutral. An alkaline has a pH of more than 7. The highest pH is 14, which is the strongest alkaline.

You are what you eat?

-This saying is not accurate. It's not really true either. However, what is accurate and true is 'You are what you digest and absorb.'

Take, for instance, the example of fruits. They have an acid pH, but after eating and digesting, many types of fruits absorbed into the body then become alkaline. They give an alkaline ash residue.

Any foods that produce an alkaline ash residue when absorbed into the body are called alkaline foods. Foods that give an acid ash residue when absorbed into the body are called acid foods. It is important to distinguish the differences when choosing a healthy diet.

Getting it right...

Ideally, for optimum nutrition a good diet should strike a balance between 80%/20% alkaline/acid foods respectively. Ideally, your pH should be around 7.4.Before I list what foods are available to strike this right ratio in favour of the alkaline diet, it has been well noted that many people are out of balance. The reason being that there has been a rise over the years of not so good, or even downright poor nutrition, such as those containing trans-fats, certain saturated fats, refined sugars, starchy carbohydrates...This has given rise to higher acid foods and a predominantly more acid ash residue in the body. It comes as no surprise to me that the rise in acid foods correlates with the increase of the major life-threatening illnesses, cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes...over the last 60 years or so.

So what are the possible benefits of an alkaline diet?

v Feel more alive and alert

v More able to concentrate better

v Far less prone to mood swings...

v Need less sleep

v Feel more willing to do exercise

v Serves as a strong prevention against disease

v Slows down the ageing process

The Alkaline diet Includes: The vegetables Spinach, asparagus, broccoli, carrots, celery, cucumber, lettuce, courgette, cabbage, greens, swede, squash (summer, butternut, yellow etc), peppers, chilli, tomato, onion, garlic, chickpeas, pinto beans, kidney beans, spring onions, root ginger, and aquatic vegetables such as sea kelp and sea dulse.

Salad Recommendations

Avocado, celery, cucumber, dandelion greens, kale, lettuce, rocket, spinach, walnuts, almonds, macadamia nuts...i.e. any nuts accept cashews and peanuts. Seeds of different sorts such as pumpkin, sunflower, sesame, flax or any sprouted seed... and watercress. Some Herbs and Spices...

Basil, parsley, coriander, ginger, garlic and dandelion greens...

Chili is one of those great dishes that can be served in tons of different ways and goes good with many delicious side dishes. But if you’re thinking about serving chili the next time you have friends over for dinner or to watch the big game or when the weather starts getting cooler, here are some great ideas you might want to use.

Making Your Chili Even Better

Even if you already make the best chili on your block or at your tailgate parties, you could spice it up with some toppings. Of course, you’ll find some of the traditional items on the list: shredded cheeses, sour cream, oyster crackers or crumbled tortilla shells (choose the ones with a hint of lime for an nice touch), saltine crackers, or even hot sauce.

But those are a little bit basic. If you’re talking about advanced chili topping for the chili connoisseur, then you’ll want to shop around in your produce department or farmer’s market. Adding scallions, green onions, cilantro, or avocado can give your chili a little color and extra taste. A dollop of guacamole instead of sour cream (or with sour cream) can also be scrumptious, especially if you make it homemade. Jalapenos are also nice for a kick and should be added by the individual consumers of the chili - not everyone likes the spice. Red onion or salsa can be nice additions, too.

Not Just for Bowls

Chili isn’t soup so it doesn’t have to be served alone in a bowl with a spoon. Instead, get creative with how you serve this dish. You can use Fritos for dipping or pour the chili on top of a baked potato, French fries, pasta (some people even add spaghetti or macaroni pasta to their chili), rice, taco shells, hamburgers or hot dogs, cornbread, or even scrambled eggs.

Chili goes good with almost any food but make sure to account for the potential messiness. Always have extra napkins.

Great Side Dishes

When you’re serving chili, it’s definitely hearty enough to be a main dish. And while some people like to eat their chili by itself, having some complementary side dishes can enhance the dish’s flavor immensely. Cornbread is a delicious and traditional addition to chili. If you’re trying to give your meal a Tex-Mex flavor, you could make Mexican cornbread with peppers, some shredded Colby/Jack cheese, and some kernel corn or if you want to make it spicier you can cut up pieces of jalapeno to add into the cornbread mix.

Black bean and corn salad is another choice. The salad, which is served cold or at room temperature, includes black beans, cubed cheeses, roasted corn, green onions, bell peppers, picante sauce, herbs, olive oil, and a few other tasty items. You can also toss in other items you love, such as avocados.

Another idea is a Southwest Vegetable salad that includes lettuce, colorful red peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, onion, cilantro, and some toasted pumpkin seeds. This dish has just as much color as flavor and has a very delicious flavor especially when enjoyed along with a bowl of chili.

Chili is one of those great dishes that can be served in tons of different ways and goes good with many delicious side dishes. Body cleansing and colon cleansing are big business. Colon cleansing products are popular in health food stores and on the internet. You even find expensive body cleansing spa treatments. But beware - you cannot cleanse your body unless you eat the right foods.

Food can help your body cleanse or they can clog and irritate your body. Foods can contribute to built up waste in the form of excess weight and fat or help you lose fat. The right food will give you lots of energy while the wrong foods can leave you feeling depressed or cranky.

While it is true that your body has the ability to cleanse itself, you still need to do your part. For example, your body needs good nutrition to get or stay thin. You also need the right foods to help your immune system stay strong. At the same time, you need the right foods to help your body do the job of keeping waste moving out.

The best foods that cleanse your body are easily digested. Digestion is a process that takes a lot of energy from your body. If your body is busy digesting, it will not have the extra energy to cleanse itself. This is why it is said that you can cleanse your body or you can digest food, but you can't do both.

The best foods that cleanse are fresh, whole, organic fruits and vegetables. These have no pesticides that can add to toxic build up and may clog your body's natural cleansing ability.

Fresh fruits are considered to be natural cleansers for your body. They are full of fresh vitamin water to help your body flush waste. Your body can digest these very easily when eaten alone. It is best to eat fresh fruit first thing in the morning.

Fresh, raw vegetables stimulate your body's natural enzymes to work. They work in two ways to help your body cleanse; they are more easily digested and they stimulate your body to digest other foods quicker. This gives your body more energy for the cleansing process.

Start your afternoon and evening meals with a fresh, raw green salad. Add a few other kinds of chopped veggies on top of your salad to get a wide variety of nutrition. Use a dressing made from olive oil, lemon juice and a dash of apple cider vinegar to give zest and even more strength to your cleanse.

Lightly steamed vegetables are the next best foods that cleanse your body. They are more easily digested than raw veggies. They also give you extra high quality nutrition so your body has the energy it needs to do all functions, including detoxing and cleansing itself. Eat extra steamed veggies with your meals in place of bread - which can clog your body's natural cleansing ability.

Eat foods that contain Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's). EFA's are known to help your body eliminate, or cleanse, harmful cholesterol from your arteries. These help reduce internal inflammation, which is a contributor to heart disease. They also help your body shed fat along with other waste and are excellent nourishment for your brain, helping you to keep your mood elevated.

Foods that contain the Essential Fat's are tuna fish, halibut, salmon, walnuts, avocadoes, cashews, flax seeds, flax oil and olive oil. It's best to get a variety. If you don't eat many of these foods, try an EFA supplement from the local health food store to make sure that you get these benefits during your body cleanse.

Animal proteins are not normally thought of as foods that cleanse your body. However, if you are just starting, you might consider eating two to three portions a day, at least the first two or so weeks of your cleanse. This is because this type of protein helps your liver strengthen so it can detoxify waste that is dislodged and moving out. As this process happens, you want to make sure your liver is in good working order.

The foods in this category are lean, organic red meats, organic chicken and turkey, fish, and organic, free range eggs. These are all healthy versions of the non-organic animal proteins, which can contribute to a clogged system and disease. Keep your portions to about the size of your palm.

Filling your plate with the foods that cleanse while keeping meats, breads and grains to a minimum will help your body cleanse quickly and safely. If this is a big eating change for you, try adding a whole food vitamin and mineral supplement to make sure that you get all the nutrition you need.

While you are cleansing, follow the normal and healthy diet rules; drink plenty of fresh, spring water, don't eat junk foods, minimize processed foods and don't skip meals. These will definitely hurt all your body cleansing efforts. Eating the best foods that cleanse will ensure that you cleanse your body and that you haven't wasted your time and money spent on cleansing products.

A lot of people are becoming health conscious already. They prefer to prepare their own food to make sure they are eating just healthy foods. They would not know what ingredients are used in commercial foods.

Then again, many of us are busy with our works and personal lives. It is often easier to resort to buying food outside rather than go to the ordeal of preparing our own food in the kitchen. Good thing though that there are now many quick recipes that will only take around 10 minutes to do. These are easy to make and promises to be very healthy.

You could also adapt a few tips on how to make preparations much easier and quicker. The first tip is to use all the possible convenient products available to you. It could be frozen mixed veggies, pasta sauces and many more. It requires little cooking. You could toss them up together in a matter of few minutes with hardly any cooking needed.

Ready the ingredients beforehand if you are thinking of a recipe already. Also prepare the utensils and other items you will need. You could easily cook after coming home if you have all these prepared already.

Think of recipes that only have a few ingredients. These are easier to prepare. You could also use leftovers instead of buying in the grocery. You save time and money. Recipes are not necessarily strictly followed. You could always deviate and make use of what you have in your refrigerator. Just experiment and see what will taste good for you. Be sure to write down what you have used so you could prepare it again next time.

Salads are generally easy to make, plus it is very healthy. Most are made from vegetables and fruits. It could be topped with a dressing or just seasoned to taste. It may also be an appetizer for your main meal.

Green or garden salads are mostly made out of green leafy vegetables like lettuce, cucumbers and cabbages. It may also be topped with mushrooms, carrots, peppers, onions, celery, avocado, and radishes. You could make your own vinaigrette dressing or just buy ready-made in bottles.

Another kind of salad is the entrée. It has toppings like chicken or sea foods. The most common type of green salad known worldwide is the one we called the caesar salad. This is very healthy and offers a complete meal at the same time. You have meat and vegetables already in one dish.

Dressings added to salads vary in different cultures. Vinaigrettes are common in Southern Europe but Asians adopted it too. Mayonnaise is often used in Eastern Europe. Crème Fraiche is the well known Denmark's salad dressings.

Other salad dressings are light edible oils. It may be soybean oil, olive oil and corn oil. Vinegar and cheeses can also be added to complement the taste. There are lots of ingredients that can be made salad dressings. These salad dressings are added to salad to add some flavors to the vegetables or fruits. These are needed because some of the vegetable are taste less. We need something to make it a little sweet or sour to make the salty taste of the fruit or vegetable less.

Salad garnishes also add flavor. It could be bacon bits ( an imitation), beetroot bell peppers, mushrooms, anchovies, sunflower seeds, shredded carrots and many more.

Colombia has some of the most delicious food in South America. Despite this fact, there are few American households that enjoy Colombian Recipes regularly – or even know much about them. When you want to add a little bit of flavor or variety of your meals, Colombian food is easily one of the best choices, as you will have dishes that few people have ever tried in their own home.

Examples of Traditional Colombian Dishes:

  • Lechona

Commonly found in both Panama and Colombia, Lechona is pork stuffed with peas, onions and rice, and cooked for an impressive 10 hours in a brick oven to bring out its best flavors. Many Colombian Recipes add a Colombian corn bread to enhance its flavor.

  • Sanchocho

Sanchocho is a type of South American soup. Ingredients differ by region, but in Columbian recipes it is common to find potato, vegetables, and nearly any kind of meat imaginable. Each region uses different meats and vegetables, so even Columbian recipes can differ quite a bit.

  • Aijaco

Another soup, Aijaco is a type of Columbian potato soup that often has large chunks of meat. In most Columbian recipes the meat will be chicken. You will also find corn, various herbs for flavoring. Like many of the Columbian meals, Aijaco started as a food for peasants before slowly gaining acceptance as a main stream dish.

  • Bandeja paisa

Of all of the Columbian recipes available, Bandeja paisa is one of the few that has very strict rules as to what constitutes the “True” dish. The Bandeja paisa contains at minimum 13 different ingredients (these ingredients include white rice, ground meat, red beans, pork rinds, friend eggs, plantain, chorizo, arepa, Hogao saunce, avocado, black pudding, mazamorra, and panella) which are served in a variety of different bowls- it must not be served in a regular plate, and the quantity of many of these items needs to be fairly high. Some areas adjust the ingredients, but those that do are said to not be caring the authentic style.

  • Asado

Asado itself is not necessarily a meal. Rather, it is the way that meat is cooked in order to get a certain type of flavor. Though it most often uses beef, it is usually complemented with other meats including chicken, steak, and goat. The meat is fired up in a traditional manner, and most Columbian recipes will add a side salad and some bread to make the meal more traditional.

Finding Columbian Recipes That Suit Your Needs

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Columbian food is that few people have truly experienced it. Though often a variation of other, more popular South American cuisine, the food itself almost always started as food for peasants before its flavors were more mastered and designed to reach the palates of food enthusiasts. You can find recipes for the Colombian dishes above and many others quickly and easily on the FoodieView Recipe Search Engine at www.foodieview.com. Will i lose weight eating this for 2 weeks? any advice?

I have 2 weeks to lose 5-10 pounds. I am female, 5'9, 135 pounds, 21 years old. I have an event coming up and I want to look my best. Here is my plan for the next two weeks:
Breakfast:
One slice of whole grain toast with 1tbsp of natural peanut butter
organic greek vanilla yogurt

Lunch:
Apple and a low fat string cheese

Dinner:
Smoked salmon and avocado salad OR baked chicken breast with roasted red peppers and tomatoes

Also, 45 minutes of cardio 4 times a week.

Honestly that doesn't look like enough food, especially if you do higher intensity cardio workouts. (Cardio is great) You need to eat throughout the day so you'll want to add some snacks to fuel your body.
Just an example of how this is not enough food - you only have one, maybe two servings of fruit depending on the size of the apple. You also have only a couple of vegetable servings.

You could add some salad and just use a bit of vinegar/olive oil for dressing. In the morning you could have an egg-white (Eggbeaters makes a easy pouring carton of egg whites...really easy to use and measure) omelet with vegetables. I make mine without cheese or make it into a scramble because I'm terrible at making omelet shapes. That' s my husbands job. Haha. Anyway.

Make sure to drink a lot of water. Green tea is pretty healthy also. It's good you don't have processed foods - make sure the cheese is not full of chemicals. Foods that have ingredients you recognize are going to be more healthy for you than foods full of chemicals.

Good luck.

You won't want to stay on a detox and weight loss diet for a long period of time, but you might want to consider trying one for one week. Don't skimp on nutrients, though. Here are sensible meal ideas for one week that will help you achieve the results you're looking for.

- Sweet and sour stir fry with rice: Gently fry chopped vegetables such as onions, peppers, baby corn and mushrooms. Add canned pineapple (in fruit juice), canned tomatoes, tomato purÚe, white wine vinegar and honey. Bring to the boil and simmer until the sauce has thickened. Serve with brown rice.

Add fresh vegetable stock, black pepper and your favorite beans. Bring to a boil and simmer until the casserole thickens.

Detox Plan Snack Ideas

- Fresh fruit or fresh fruit salad

- Natural yogurt mixed with honey

- Plain popcorn

It's important to remember that you should stay on this plan for only one week. You should feel better and have a lot more energy when you're done. Good luck!

If you want to improve your health and vitality levels then one of the best things you can do is adopt an alkaline diet. I've got 3 great alkaline diet recipes for you :-)

You should aim for a 70:30 ratio of alkaline to acidic foods.

In my and many other people's experience, if you try and eat 100% alkaline foods, it is really too difficult to sustain and doesn't allow for some foods that should be enjoyed sparingly, like fruit.

It is better to go for 70:30 than 'fall off the wagon' completely, trying to achieve a 100% alkaline diet.

Here are 3 easy, quick and tasty alkaline diet recipes: The first is a lovely tasty curry. Herbs and spices are very alkalizing so use these freely in all your food preparation and cooking. The second recipe is a slightly sweet avocado salad. Avocadoes are absolutely wonderful foods - full of Omega 3 essential oils and one for the only alkaline fruits, a real super food. The third recipe is a good old classic salad. You really can't go wrong with eating a big salad every day - dark green leafy vegetables are amazingly alkalizing so knock yourself out :-) Enjoy!

Herbs are fun and easy to grow. When harvested they make even the simplest meal seem like a gourmet delight. By using herbs in your cooking you can easily change the flavors of your recipes in many different ways, according to which herbs you add. Fresh herbs are great in breads, stews, soups or vegetables. Every time you add a different herb you have completely changed the taste.

If you are a beginner start slowly, add just a little at a time adjusting as you go along until you have it just right. You will see in most instances that an individual herb is associated with a particular food item. Basil is paired with tomatoes, Oregano with sauces, Rosemary with lamb and Chives with butter or cream cheese. Of course, none of them are limited to these items, but you will see them paired most often with that particular food. Use your imagination and experiment, experiment, experiment

You can make herb vinegars for salad dressings, marinades, or soups. Herb oils are very useful in cooking whenever a recipe calls for it.

Fresh herbs as garnishes dress up any dish making it look truly spectacular. Lay individual sprigs of rosemary over broiled lamb chops. Chop fresh parsley and sprinkle it over the top of your potato salad. The combinations are endless and the outcome delicious.

Fresh herbs will keep in the refrigerator for several days but then you must freeze them. They can be frozen by laying them a paper towel and putting them in a plastic bag. Once they are frozen only use them in cooking not as garnishes. A friend of mine washes them, puts them an ice cube tray, covers them with water and then freezes them. When she needs them for soup, stews or sauces she just drops a cube in.

My favorite herbs to grow are basil, oregano, lemon balm, parsley and mint. Mint is great but be careful, mint can over run your garden. A tip here would be to bury an empty coffee can and plant the mint in it. The can prevents the mint from creeping all through your garden.

I love to make herb butters. Take a half of a cup of softened butter and mix in about 4 tablespoons of a fresh herb. Lay out a piece of saran wrap, place the butter in the middle roll the saran wrap up to form a log out of the butter. Put in the refrigerator and anytime you need a pat of butter just cut it off the log. Hints for log butter potatoes, bread, steaks, noodles or any kind of sauce.

A fresh herb in any salad dressing really makes it sparkle. You can use any herb or a combination, be creative.

I learned a trick a long time ago using basil, lemon and avocados to create and instant natural face mask. Put a big handful of basil in a blender and run it on high. Once the basil has been pulverized, throw in a half of an avocado and a large teaspoon of lemon juice, mix until smooth. Wash your face, pat it dry and gently rub the avocado mixture on. Leave it on as long as you like, then use warm water to it wash off.

These are just a few ways you can use fresh herbs from your garden. I am sure you will come up with many more. Happy cooking

Good glycemic foods tend to absorb slowly into the system, allowing the body to break down the refined sugars and starches so that the body can digest them properly. People with Type I and Type II diabetes have a difficult time digesting carbohydrates, particularly those that are high on the glycemic index, and this lack of proper digestion makes it difficult for the diabetic to expel glucose from their blood,. While most diabetics are wise to avoid most, if not all carbohydrates, as these are what are the most difficult to digest and break down, certain carbohydrates are better than others for diabetics to consume.

Good glycemic foods tend to have a low score on the Glycemic Index that was developed in 1981 at the University of Toronto. Good glycemic foods are still carbohydrates, but make it easier for the diabetic to digest and are much healthier and preferable than those glycemic foods with high ratings on the Glycemic Index. Substitutions are available for foods that rate high on the Glycemic Index and are widely available in supermarkets and other food stores.

Some of the foods that rate low on the Glycemic Index include most fruits and vegetables, Although fruits and vegetables contain sugar, the sugars contained in these good glycemic foods digest into the system at a lower rate and also provide valuable nutrients to the diabetic, or just about everyone. The only vegetable that a diabetic should avoid is a potato, as it has a high glycemic index. Other fruits and vegetables, however, are preferable than white rice, white bread, corn flakes and anything made with white refined sugar or flour.

Other good glycemic foods include wholegrain breads and pastas. If you or a loved one has Type I or Type II diabetes, you should switch to whole grain breads and pastas made from wheat flour. This can be tremendously helpful to anyone who wants to manage their glycemia as well as anyone who wants to follow such low carb diets. Basmati rice is also considered one of the good glycemic foods.

List of Low GI foods:

There are foods on the list that may be "low glycemic" but at the same time be a poor choice because of other criteria such as sodium content, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol and other issues.

The GI value of potato chips or french fries is lower than baked potatoes. Large amounts of fat in foods tends to slow the rate of stomach emptying and therefore the rate at which foods are digested. Yet the saturated fat in these foods will contribute to a much increased risk of heart disease. It is important to look at the type of fat in foods rather than avoid it completely. Good fats are found in foods such as avocadoes, nuts and legumes while saturated fats are found in dairy products, cakes and biscuits. We'd all be better off if we left the cakes and biscuits for special occasions.

It should be noted that the list is not exhaustive in the sense the GI value depends on a lot of factors other than the type of food. For example the method of preparation, the storage of food materials, the manner of eating etc. Also the list takes only the GI parameter into consideration and it can happen that some of the low GI foods mentioned may not be beneficial for health owing to the excess amount of constituents like fats etc.

Benefits of the Glycemic Index?

* Low GI carbs reduce the risk of heart disease

* Low GI carbs reduce blood cholesterol levels

* Low GI carbs can help you manage the symptoms of PCOS

* Low GI carbs reduce hunger and keep you fuller for longer

* Low GI carbs prolong physical endurance

* High GI carbs help re-fuel carbohydrate stores after exercise.

* Moderate reductions in GL make losing weight easier, particularly for women.

* A high carb diet based around low GI foods was overall the most effective for heart health - good news for those who love their carbs.

* Low GI wholegrain foods (such as traditional porridge oats) provided heart health benefits over and above those of high GI wholegrains (such as wholewheat flakes).

How to Switch to a Low GI Diet

The basic technique for eating the low GI way is simply a "this for that" approach - ie, swapping high GI carbs for low GI carbs. You don't need to count numbers or do any sort of mental arithmetic to make sure you are eating a healthy, low GI diet.

* Use breakfast cereals based on oats, barley and bran

* Use breads with wholegrains, stone-ground flour, sour dough

* Reduce the amount of potatoes you eat

* Enjoy all other types of fruit and vegetables

* Use Basmati or Doongara rice

* Enjoy pasta, noodles, quinoa

* Eat plenty of salad vegetables with a vinaigrette dressing

asparagus avocado salad
How common is it for a 5 yr old to eat properly, and enjoy it ?

I know this little girl. She eats up a storm, she is always hungry, but it is all good.
She would rather have raw broccoli , than a cheeseburger from Micky D's.She eats salads, all kinds of veggies, you name it. Avocados, tomatoes, potatoes, asparagus, Brusslel Sprouts, how many kids will even eat, let alone like, Brussel Sprouts ? She blows my mind. I could learn a lesson or two from her about my dietary habits.
She is getting her protien too. She loves chicken, and beef to. Put some ribs in front of her, and watch your fingers man !
I like making her breakfast. She loves mym scrambled eggs. And we made some blueberry pancskes the other day, that just rocked the world. No kidding .
Thanks for all your answers. I am 51, and I never had a child of my own, but I really love this one. In addition to eating right, she is smarter than most adults I know. I want to keep her, but her mom won't let me. She is a real peach. Carly Rose, she even has a cool name.

Rare!

If she is going through a growth spurt she will eat a lot all the time, but she'll slow down during periods of no major growth.

Does she get enough protein? That is really important for a growing body. She may be a born vegetarian, but the protein is mandatory.

She sounds very special.
