Good fats can promote the development of "good cholesterol" or HDL levels.

This is beneficial because HDL cholesterol picks up excess cholesterol in your blood and takes it back to your liver for disposal. The higher your HDL cholesterol, the less bad cholesterol you'll have in your blood.

To increase the shelf life of commercially packaged foods, scientist created trans fats. They did this by hydrogenating the oil. GOOD FATS

MONOUNSATURATED FATS

Monounsaturated fats (MUFAs) lower LDL cholesterol while increasing HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol). Nuts like peanuts and walnuts almonds are high in MUFA's. You can also find it in canola, olive oil and avocados.

POLYUNSATURATED FATS

Polyunsaturated fat can also lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. They can be found in certain types of seafood like salmon. They can also be found in fish oil corn, soy, safflower and sunflower oils.

CHANGE HOW YOU THINK ABOUT FATS

Diets low in fats should be altered to a diet low in a certain type of fat.

The key is to replace bad fat with good fat in our diet by checking food package labels to see what kind of fats are in the foods you are purchasing.

what sort of fruit is this?

i think it's called cushaw melon but i can't confirm it. It's a green apple-sized fruit that turned dark as it ripened. the meat (the part you eat) was white and it had alot of seeds the size and shape of almonds. it tasted to me like yogurt with maybe an avocado-y after taste. it was good. any ideas what its called?

ok well i need a homemade face mask for acne... i have a bump on my chin that is growing in to acne. Also something for imperfect face... my skin is ugly and pimplely , dry anyways what can be a good homemade face mask?

Avocado and avocado oil offers so many benefits when used in your skin products. Did you know that avocado contains vitamins A, B1, B2 and D, lecithin, potassium as well as vitamin E. Avocados are used in anti-aging products because of its nourishing and hydrating abilities. The Department of Food Engineering and Biotechnology, Technion Israel Institute of Technology in 1991 found that avocado oil significantly increases collagen in the skin which is why it is commonly found in antiaging products. Furthermore because of its deep penetration into the skin it is a perfect ingredient to combat dry skin. For those that suffer with eczema or psoriasis avocado offers healing properties that will relive dryness. Both avocado and avocado oil is gentle and well tolerated by those with sensitive skin.

In addition to its moisturizing and healing properties, it is also high in sterolins, AKA plant steroids, which are reported to diminish age spots and heal scars.

Below are a few avocado skin care recipes:

Facial Mask for Dry Skin
1/2 avocado
1 teaspoon almond oil (Note if allergic to nuts use different oil such as jojoba oil or olive oil). Even a vegetable oil in your cupboard will do.)
Mash avocado and then add almond oil or oil of your choice. Apply to face, avoiding the eye area, and let set for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water then cool water. Follow with toner and moisturizer.

Avocado Honey Face Mask - for dry skin
2 tablespoons of avocado
2 tablespoons honey
1 egg yolk
Mash the avocado, add the honey and egg. Mix until thoroughly blended. Apply to face avoiding the eye area. Let set 10 minutes then rise with warm water then cool water. Follow with toner and moisturizer.

Avocado Mask for Oily Skin
1 avocado, mash
1 egg white
1 tsp. lemon juice
Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until you get a mixture. Apply to a clean face with fingertips on the oiliest part of the face (T-zone). Let dry for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water then cool water, follow with toner and moisturizer.

Avocado's can be hard to find and/or a little pricey if living in a northern climate, so here are some recipes that use avocado oil instead.

Dry Skin Cleansing Cream
1/2 oz. Beeswax
1 oz. Lanolin
2 oz. Almond Oil
1 oz. Avocado Oil
1 oz. Grapeseed Oil
2 drops Clary-Sage Essential Oil
2 drops Lemon Essential Oil
3 oz. Spring Water
Using a double boiler, melt beeswax, lanolin, and oils. Stir well. When melted, take off heat and add essential oils, then water. Wisk until cool.

What is a good guacamole recipe?

i just mashed an avocado in a bowl and my sister just told me to make guacamole, but i don't want to do the original "lemon and salt" thing. are there any spices i can add to it to make a good guacamole dip? i asked my friend and she said bacon... the problem with that is:: my sister and i are vegetarians.
so what spices could i add to the avocado? oh, my sister is allergic to tomatoes so i can't add those.. is there anything i could put into it?

I would never add lemon, I would add lime. It's more of a mexican ingredient. In mine I add tomatoes (which of course you would omit), red onion, lime, salt, black pepper and chopped cilantro. That's it. Keep it simple so you can taste the main flavors. For something like guacamole, if you add something like garlic powder it would dominate your palate.

Avocado oiled is renowned for its curative, unwilling-bacterial, and unwilling-rumple properties. Technically a fruit, loutish Avocado Oil is cold pressed from avocado pear and is grave green vaguely brownish in colour, while refined Avocado oil is pale blonde.

For dry and lined skin, mingle 4 drops of frankincense, 2 drops each of rose and neroli oils and 20 ml of avocado oil. This blend is good for rejuvenation, induces relaxation and slumber if used at bed time.

Will this remedy make my hair grow?

Purchase a mild Shampoo (To Clarify hair, I will explain why)

Second: TRIM your hair ends (May 1 1/2 to 2 inches)

You could just take Vitamin E supplements. They will make your hair and nails grow faster. But I don't know about that. I don't think putting things on your hair will make them grow but I guess its worth a shot.

Unrefined avocado oil is considered to be one of the most healthful vegetable oils one can consume. It is a multi-purpose oil that can be used for culinary purposes (it is exceptionally high in Vitamin E  as well as monounsaturated fats), suitable for dressings and sauces as well as frying, due to its high smoke point of over 490 degrees. Organic avocado oil is also an excellent “carrier” oil for other flavors; avocado carrier oil is ideal for infusion with various herbs. In addition to its suitability as a comestible, unrefined avocado oil is also excellent for use as a cosmetic and the repair of damaged skin.

Historical Background

Bulk avocado oil comes from the fruit of the same name. The scientific name of the tree from which we obtain organic avocado oil is Persea Americana. It is native to the Caribbean coast of Mexico, and was apparently known to pre-Incan peoples of present-day Peru. The word avocado itself is derived from a word in the Nahuatl language, ahuacatl, which literally means “testicle.” This is most likely a reference to the shape of the fruit; among the Aztecs, avocados were believed to confer fertility and have aphrodisiac properties.

Europeans could not have known of the benefits of organic avocado oil much before 1500; the first written descriptions of the fruit dates from a Spanish geography text written about 1520, and the first English accounts were not published until over 180 years later.

Although not initially raised to obtain bulk avocado oil, the plant itself was first exported abroad in 1750, when the first avocado trees were planted in Indonesia. It arrived in Brazil about fifty years later; by the 1890s, avocado groves had been established in Rhodesia (present-day Kenya) and Australia. It was introduced in Lebanon and Palestine (present-day Israel) in 1908.

Today the plants that are the source of healthful organic avocado oil are grown primarily in Mexico. California, Australia, New Zealand and Kenya.

What Is an Avocado?

Although it grows on a tree and has a pit, it is actually considered a berry; that is, the source of bulk avocado oil is a fruit produced from a single ovary which ripens into a fleshy, edible pulp surrounded by a skin. Seeds are embedded within this pulp.

Botanically, the avocado is a member of the laurel family, along with the bay tree and cinnamon. There are over a dozen types of avocados grown today; however, the most common varieties are the hass avocado, which is a black-colored fruit with a pebbled skin texture and a bulk avocado oil content of approximately 19%, and the pinkerton, which has a smooth green skin.

Unlike most types of vegetable oils which are derived from seeds, organic avocado oil is extracted from the fleshy pulp of the fruit.

More About Avocado Oil

As mentioned earlier, avocado carrier oil is fine for creating different flavored oils. Although fine for humans and other primates, organic avocado oil contains a fatty acid known as persin, which can be highly toxic to domestic animals, particularly dogs, cats and horses.

Although avocados are a perennial crop in those regions in which they are grown (they can survive temperatures down to 26 degrees Fahrenheit), organic avocado oil can be expensive as relatively little of the crop is actually pressed for oil. It does however compare quite well to olive oil for taste and body; true gourmands consider the extra cost for organic avocado oil well worth it.

Simple Recipes for Skin Care

Puffed Eyes

Facial Mask

This facial mask is useful for dry skin. Mash half avocado and apply it leisurely on your face. Keep it for 15 minutes and then rinse it off with warm water.

Make a paste of ½ ripe avocado mixed with 1 tsp vegetable oil. Apply this paste on a washed and clean face. Leave it for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse it with warm water. This masque is very good for dry skin.

Smooth and Beautiful Hands

Make a paste by mixing 1/4 peeled & smashed avocado, 1 egg white, 2 tbsp. oatmeal and 1 tsp lemon juice. Apply this paste on your hand and leave it for 20 minutes. Rinse it with warm water and pat it dry. You would be thrilled by the results by using it regularly.

Facial Scrub

You would need 2 tbsp. flax seeds, 1/2 mashed banana and 1/2 avocado peel. Use a small bowl to mix flax seeds and banana. Scoop the banana and flax seed by using avocado peel. Massage this scoop on your face in circular motion, slowly and gently. Rinse it with warm water.

Does eating dozens of avocados make you fat?

I thought they were good for you but they are making me fat. I love avocados and eat them more and more. However, I am gaining weight! Strange.

Well, I was also under the impression that avocados are fattening, so I stay clear! LOL, it looks as though we both need to learn more about avos, according to this link:

1) Reduce your carbohydrate consumption. Avoid refined carbohydrates and eat only good quality low glycemic carbohydrates, such as fruits and vegetables. Eat very few grains especially corn and wheat, and avoid eating carbohydrates close to bedtime. Leave at least 3 hours between a carbohydrate containing meal and sleep.

2) Do not eat large amounts of carbohydrates (especially refined carbohydrates) with fats. When combining macronutrients, you can eat carbohydrates and protein together, or fat and protein together. However avoid eating carbohydrates and fats in large amounts in the same meal if possible. Carbohydrates tend to increase fat storage, especially when eaten with fats. Be sure to include some form of fiber such as psyllium or bran to ensure good bowel function and elimination.

3) One of the most important fat burning tips is to eat enough fat! The body will try to hold onto it’s fat if your intake of fat is very low. This is a survival mechanism from our primitive past. Eat healthy fats in the form of EFA's (fish oil), olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, nuts, CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), almond butter, and even some organic butter. If you do consume animal fats, do so in the form of very lean meats like buffalo, or free range organic beef. Chicken and turkey breasts are good choices as well. Proteins can be considered fat burning food, because they cause your body to expend up to 30% of the caloric value of the food, in order to digest it.

4) Eat in accordance with your blood type and metabolic type. Your blood type indicates what foods react adversely with your immune system, and so should largely be avoided. Your metabolic type indicates what ratio of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins is best for your individual needs.

5) Do some form of fat burning exercises each day. Perform weight-training exercise to build lean muscle that burns fat. When doing cardiovascular exercise, perform interval training, in which bursts of high intensity exercise are combined with short rest periods. These strategies focus on brief intense exercise, which has been shown to elevate metabolism and result in more favorable hormonal effects than long duration cardio exercise.

6) This is a fat burning tip that’s a “no brainer.” Avoid excess alcohol consumption. Alcohol is a carbohydrate and too much of it lowers testosterone levels, which has negative consequences for burning fat. It also dehydrates your system, which will make it harder for body to properly regulate important functions that are critical to fat burning.
A glass of wine with your meal on occasion is ok, a six pack a night is obviously not.

7) Drink plenty of clean pure water. Water consumption has been shown to increase metabolic rate, and help cellular toxins out of your system. Water is also essential for the hormonal signaling processes that your endocrine system uses to regulate critical fat burning hormones like testosterone, and growth hormone.

8) Avoid the use of stimulants or appetite suppressors for fat loss. Stimulants can create imbalances in your neural chemistry and stress your adrenal glands. You might get a short-term effect but in the long term they can cause problems and even jeopardize your health in certain circumstances. Stick with sound nutritional practices.

9) Do use fat burning supplements such as green tea, acetyl-l-carnitine, cayenne, and hydroxy citric acid which blocks conversion of carbohydrates to glucose. Any list of fat burning tips should include these nutritional supplements, as they can be very effective in helping you turn on your fat burning metabolism.

10) Eat small frequent meals of fat burning food, throughout the day, spaced about 3 hours apart. This allows for full digestion, helps to keep blood sugar levels stable, and optimizes metabolism. Some people set one day a week aside to indulge in some sweets or other favorite food that they would normally avoid.

This may or may not work for you, so you have to experiment. This is best done on a weekend day like Saturday or Sunday, when you are most likely to be socializing. Even on this one day, do not get carried away, and when the week starts again, you should be back to your regular regimen.

Remember that when you reach your goal weight or bodyfat percentage, you must maintain a sensible eating program so as not to rebound and lose all that you have achieved. Try to eliminate food cravings so that you will be able to stick to a sensible plan and not feel deprived. Cravings are a sign of biochemical imbalances in your body. Get them checked out so they don’t sabotage your body composition goals and health.

Avocado Honey Face Mask - for dry skin
2 tablespoons of avocado
2 tablespoons honey
1 egg yolk
Mash the avocado, add the honey and egg. Mix until thoroughly blended. Apply to face avoiding the eye area. Let set 10 minutes then rise with warm water then cool water. Follow with toner and moisturizer.

Avocado Mask for Oily Skin
1 avocado, mash
1 egg white
1 tsp. lemon juice
Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until you get a mixture. Apply to a clean face with fingertips on the oiliest part of the face (T-zone). Let dry for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water then cool water, follow with toner and moisturizer.

Avocado's can be hard to find and/or a little pricey if living in a northern climate, so here are some recipes that use avocado oil instead.

Dry Skin Cleansing Cream
1/2 oz. Beeswax
1 oz. Lanolin
2 oz. Almond Oil
1 oz. Avocado Oil
1 oz. Grapeseed Oil
2 drops Clary-Sage Essential Oil
2 drops Lemon Essential Oil
3 oz. Spring Water
Using a double boiler, melt beeswax, lanolin, and oils. Stir well. When melted, take off heat and add essential oils, then water. Wisk until cool.

I like to bring a 1/2 Avocado with me to work to eat with my lunch. However, if I cut them into pieces and put them in a little tupperware tub, by lunch time, the avocados get brown spots. I also tried to wrap a half of Avocad in saran wrap, but by lunch it also has brown spots. What can I do to prevent this?
